J. M. Smith1, one of Canada's important writers and, since the 1930's, a poet of international repute. It is an act of homage, but just as much a conversation in which various writers, including the poet himself, express their views on his achievement; as becomes evident, it is an achievement by no means confined to the hundred poems which Smith at this time has chosen to represent him. Earle Birney, who has known A. J. M. Commissioner Jonathan Hill 32 Smith Square, London SW1P 3EU Dear Commissioner Hill, We are writing this open letter to you as NGOs, civil society organisations, campaigners and EU citizens to call on you to amend the proposed rules for addressing excessive price speculation on food and other commodities in financial markets. When the EU legislation - Markets in Financial Instruments Directive II (MiFID II) – was agreed in January 2014, the European Commission claimed that it would be “curbing speculation on commodities and the disastrous impacts it can have on the world's poorest populations.” 1 However, we are alarmed that the proposed rules for implementation 2 will severely weaken the effectiveness of the legislation and will not tackle excessive speculation on food and other commodities. High and volatile food prices have had a devastating impact in poor and food dependent countries, causing increased hunger, poverty and instability. They also affect agricultural producers as well as consumers in the EU and around the world. Strict limits need to be set consistently throughout the EU on the amount that companies and persons can bet on commodity prices in order to curb harmful speculation. However, the proposals to implement MiFID II that you are considering will allow weak and ineffective position limit systems in member states. They will also leave the EU unable to deliver on its commitments by the G20 leaders, G20 Finance Ministers and G20 Agriculture Ministers. The EU agreed to improve the regulation of financial commodity markets to address excessive price volatility 3 as an important step to reduce poverty, achieve food security, budget stability and strong growth that is both sustainable and inclusive 4 including setting up a robust position limits system. -

John married Elizabeth Hinde, daughter of Henry Hinde. Elizabeth was born in 1717 and died on 6 Nov 1761 at age 44. They had two children: Henry Hinde and John. 2-Capt. Henry Hinde Pelly was born on 6 Jun 1744 in West Ham, London and died on 23 Feb 1818 at age 73. Henry married Sally Hitchen Blake,1 daughter of Capt. John Blake, on 13 Jul 1776. Sally was born in 1744 and died on 15 May 1824 at age 80. They had four children: John Henry, William, Charles, and Francis. 3-Sir John Henry Pelly 1st Bt. was born on 31 Mar 1777 in West Ham, London and died on 13 Aug 1852 in Upton Manor, Plaistow, Essex at age 75. General Notes: Sir John Henry Pelly, 1st Bt. was a Younger Brother of Trinity House in 1803. He was Deputy Governor of the Hudson Bay Company between 1812 and 1822. He was Captain of the Honourable East India Company Service. He was a Member of Court Bank of England between 1822 and 1852. He was Governor of the Hudson Bay Company between 1822 and 1852. He held the office of Elder Brother of Trinity House in 1823. He was Deputy Master of Trinity Master in 1834. He was created 1st Baronet Pelly, of Upton, Essex [U.K.] on 12 August 1840. Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH DUNBLANE CATHEDRAL SYNOPSIS Dunblane, on the east bank of the Allan Water and possibly named after St Blane (died c.590), is believed to have been a religious centre by the 9th century. In the 12th century the bishopric was re-established and a stone cathedral church built. Comprehensive rebuilding took place after 1237, and by the 1300s the cathedral comprised an aisled nave, incorporating the original tower, an aisle-less chancel and an adjoining north range housing sacristy, chapter house and treasury. After the Protestant Reformation (1560), parochial worship was relocated to the chancel. The neglected nave fast fell into ruin. The chancel and north range were restored by James Gillespie Graham in 1816-19. Major restoration of the nave was undertaken in 1889-93 to a design by Robert Rowand Anderson. Although the cathedral is in state care, it continues as a place of worship by the Church of Scotland. Among the fine furnishings are rare late medieval canopied stalls, considered amongst the finest in Scotland. CHARACTER OF THE MONUMENT Historical Overview: 6th century AD - St Blane (Blàthan), according to tradition, is born on Bute and buried at Kingarth monastery there (St Blane's). -

On civic occasions we are proud to speak of our citizenship of the City and Royal Burgh of Brechin ; on Saturday evenings, football fans are familiar with the varying fortunes of our Football Team, Brechin City, whose ground is known as Glebe Park (once the perquisite of the Minister of the First Charge). With a population of less than 7,000 people, we may be a small burgh, apprehensive of what the Wheatley proposals will do to our community, but both natives and incomers are proud to be Brechiners and conscious that for close on a thousand years, the spiritual centre of our community has been the Cathedral. The first reference to this centre of Christian Life and Worship is to be found in the Pictish Chronicle, when in the reign of Kenneth II (971-995), it is recorded, " Hic est qui tribuit magnum civitatem Brechne Domino." It seems likely that prior to this date there was already a religious com- munity in existence, established by the Celtic Church. We can say then that the Church in Brechin was established in the Dark Ages and some time after King Kenneth 's gift of lands to the Culdee community, the famous Round Tower of Brechin was erected about 1000 A.D. Dimensions: 285cm (112¼") High, 95cm (37½") Wide Stock Code: 43016 History William Wilson (1905–1972) learned stained glass making in an apprenticeship with James Ballantyne, and by studying under Herbert Hendrie. In 1932 he was awarded a Carnegie Travelling Scholarship by the Royal Scottish Academy, which he used to study at Edinburgh College of Art and to travel in France, Germany, Italy and Spain. In these travels he made pen and ink drawings of Venice, and Madrid, Granada, Ronda, and Toledo. He studied printmaking under Adam Bruce Thomson and became an accomplished watercolourist. He studied further at the Royal College of Art, London, producing etchings and engravings of subjects such as "Loch Scavaig, Skye" in the 1930s. Wilson taught stained glass making at Edinburgh College of Art. He started his own studio in 1937, making stained glass windows for Canterbury Cathedral and a number of Scottish Churches.
