AIAA Fellows The first 23 Fellows of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (I) were elected on 31 January 1934. They were: Joseph S. Ames, Karl Arnstein, Lyman J. Briggs, Charles H. Chatfield, Walter S. Diehl, Donald W. Douglas, Hugh L. Dryden, C.L. Egtvedt, Alexander Klemin, Isaac Laddon, George Lewis, Glenn L. Martin, Lessiter C. Milburn, Max Munk, John K. Northrop, Arthur Nutt, Sylvanus Albert Reed, Holden C. Richardson, Igor I. Sikorsky, Charles F. Taylor, Theodore von Kármán, Fred Weick, Albert Zahm. Dr. von Kármán also had the distinction of being the first Fellow of the American Rocket Society (A) when it instituted the grade of Fellow member in 1949. The following year the ARS elected as Fellows: C.M. Bolster, Louis Dunn, G. Edward Pendray, Maurice J. Zucrow, and Fritz Zwicky. Fellows are persons of distinction in aeronautics or astronautics who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology thereof. A special Fellow Grade Committee reviews Associate Fellow nominees from the membership and makes recommendations to the Board of Directors, which makes the final selections. Everything you Need to Know About the International Space Station Science Fair 2021 By: J. R. Montessori Academy at Spring Valley 8th Grade Focus Question What is the International Space Station, how was it built, what do the crewmates do there? Introduction The year was 1998 the date was November the 20th and the whole world was buzzing with anticipation. Today was the day that the first piece of the ISS, the Zarya, would be launched. On October 4, 1957, the US was in the midst of the Cold War which started in 1947 and tension hung in the air between the US and the Soviet Union. The Soviets had just launched the Sputnik 1, a Russian artificial satellite. The US was shocked that the Russians had reached the stars before the US did. Only a month later the Russians launched yet another rocket called the Sputnik 2 and this time it carried a dog named Laika. It wasn't until 1958 that the US finally got their own rocket; Explorer 1, launched. In 1969 Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first men on the moon and the US had won the space race. Statement My model will show what the International Space Station will look like in scale. Why is THe ISS Important? What is the purpose of the ISS? The ISS is a laboratory to conduct experiments. Why do we need a laboratory in space when we already have thousands here on Earth? Well, in space things are very different. That includes the gravity (there is none) the oxygen we breathe (it's artificial aboard the ISS so the air the astro/cosmonauts breath is recycled), so naturally experiment results will also be very different. -

(Phone: 202/453-8400) RELEASE: 87-56 SHEEHAN NAMED ASSOCIATE AE_INISTRATOR FOR _NICATIONS William Sheehan has been appointed Associate Administrator for Cournnunications, NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., effective May 4, 1987. This new position, announced in February 1987, reflects the importance that NASA management places on full and complete communications within and outside the agency. Sheehan will be the principal advisor to the Administrator and Deputy Administrator on public affairs matters. He will be responsible for policy level management and direction of NASA's public affairs, television development and internal communications organizat ions. Sheehan comes to NASA from The Executive Television Workshop, Inc., where he was director of the Detroit office. Prior to this position he was executive director, Corporate Public Affairs, Ford Motor Co. and vice president Public Affairs, Ford Aerospace and Corrrnunications Corp., Detroit. In 1974, Sheehan was appointed president of ABC News, a position he held until 1977. He had held various positions at ABC since 1961 including five years as a national and foreign correspondent. He was a radio and television anchorman, labor reporter and chief of ABC News' London bureau between 1961 and 1966. In 1966, he returned to New York to become vice president, Television News,_"';iseni.o.r _ vice president and then president, ABC News. Recently, Sheehan has been/working in public television on the local and national level as chairman of the board of station WTVS of Detroit and is a member of the board of directors and on the executive committee of the Public Broadcasting Service. -

Bartoe and Thomas Holloway NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, USA The first phase of the International Space Station construction has been completed, and research has begun. Russian, U.S., and Canadian hardware is on orbit, ard Italian logistics modules have visited often. With the delivery of the U.S. Laboratory, Destiny, significant research capability is in place, and dozens of U.S. and Russian experiments have been conducted. Crew members have been on orbit continuously since November 2000. Several "bumps in the road" have occurred along the way, and each has been systematically overcome. Enormous amounts of hardware and software are being developed by the International Space Station partners and participants around the world and are largely on schedule for launch. Significant progress has been made in the testing of completed elements at launch sites in the United States and Kazakhstan. Over 250,000 kg of flight hardware have been delivered to the Kennedy Space Center and integrated testing of several elements wired together has progressed extremely well. Mission control centers are fully functioning in Houston, Moscow, and Canada, and operations centers Darmstadt, Tsukuba, Turino, and Huntsville will be going on line as they are required. Extensive coordination efforts continue among the space agencies of the five partners and two participants, involving 16 nations. All of them continue to face their own challenges and have achieved significant successes. -

BIBLIOGRAPHIC ESSAY People make history; then, the history becomes documented through primary texts and official records. However, the history of Shuttle-Mir comes first from those who experienced it. This book presents the human side through a detailed chronology and background information. Much of the material was provided by the NASA Johnson Space Center Oral History Project for which dozens of Shuttle-Mir participants (see list below) offered their words, their stories, their memories. Historian Stephen Ambrose wrote in the introduction to his book, Citizen Soldiers, “Long ago my mentors … taught me to let my characters speak for themselves by quoting them liberally. They were there. I wasn't. They saw with their own eyes; they put their lives on the line. I didn't. They speak with an authenticity no one else can match. Their phrases, their word choices, their slang are unique — naturally enough, as their experiences were unique.” 1 Shuttle-Mir was likewise unique. And, its oral histories will continue through the years to illustrate the humanity and illuminate the importance of the Program. Also, this book reflects the changing of the times. The Internet came of age during the Shuttle-Mir Program, and many of the book’s sources reflect the Internet’s capabilities. For historical background, NASA history offices maintain an ever-growing library of electronic texts. NASA’s various Centers maintain Internet Web sites pertinent to their missions, such as the Shuttle launch records at Kennedy Space Center and human spaceflight information at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). During and after the Program, JSC hosted a Shuttle-Mir Web site that included weekly updates and interviews. -

Expedition 11 Opening the Door for Return to Flight
