President Donald Trump on Monday said he has plans to help the cruise and airline industries that have been “hard hit” by an outbreak of the coronavirus, as his administration sent mixed signals over whether Americans should proceed with holiday cruise plans. “We’re working with them very, very strongly,” Trump told reporters, referring to airline and cruise line executives who have met with White House officials in recent days. He also said that the administration is talking to the hotel industry. “Some places actually will do well, and some places probably won’t do well at all,” the president said. Vice President Mike Pence said the administration would roll out details on Tuesday, and said it had requested major reforms to the cruise line industry. 09 March, 2020: Florida’s $9 billion cruise industry faces biggest test since 9/11 Sunday’s travel warning by the US State Department against cruising was meant to protect travelers from the novel coronavirus, known as Covid-19. But it also threatens the health of one of South Florida’s largest and most iconic industries, responsible for nearly $9 billion in annual economic impact to Florida — most in -Dade and Broward counties. That impact is now in doubt in the wake of the global Covid-19 outbreak. Fears about the disease and an oil price war sent stocks plummeting so dramatically Monday that trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted within minutes of the market’s opening bell. Trading resumed after a brief hiatus, but the breather wasn’t enough to halt the worst one-day point loss for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in history. While the overall market fell 7% Monday, cruise stocks plunged by 20% and more. Shares in Carnival Corp., the world’s largest carrier, fell 20%, while Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. dropped by 25% and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings plummeted by 27%. The three companies — the world’s largest public cruise holding companies — are all based in Miami-Dade. Read more…. https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/article241024641.html

Shares of Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean have dropped 60% to 70% since January as passengers have canceled trips and cruise lines have suspended voyages to Asia. Hundreds of passengers have been stuck on quarantined ships while others have questioned the coronavirus quarantine protocols while onboard. The U.S. State Department weighed in Sunday with a statement advising Americans to avoid cruise ships because of an "increased risk of infection of COVID- 19 in a cruise ship environment." 05 March 2020: Carnival Cruise Line Changes Stops for 2 Ships Amid Ports’ Coronavirus Concerns

The new details come after another ship from Carnival, the Costa Luminosa, reportedly docked in Jamaica last Friday but was not allowed to have Italian citizens get off. Ships from a Miami-based cruise line are having to readjust travel plans in light of recent measures from Caribbean countries to stop the potential spread of coronavirus. An official with Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that two ships – the Horizon and the Freedom – were scheduled to make stops in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands this weekend but will be making different stops. "While we are following all U.S. CDC and World Health Organization screening protocols and guidelines, we want to avoid any possibility of a visit to a destination where there is uncertainty or we risk being turned away," the company said in a statement Wednesday.

07 Feb 2020: Anthem of the Seas, Health concern at disembarkation New York Post reports more than 4,000 passengers fled a Royal Caribbean liner in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Friday after their Caribbean cruise — and four passengers were rushed to the hospital for testing. The four suspect passengers were all Chinese nationals who had recently traveled from home. They included one who fell ill with a fever on board and later tested positive for influenza. Some of the patients were wheeled off the vessel on gurneys, and all four were immediately taken to University Hospital in Newark by infectious-disease experts from the federal Centers for Disease Control for testing. Another 23 passengers — Chinese nationals who had been kept in isolation during much of the 12-day cruise on the Anthem of the Seas — were also whisked away by CDC officials, who had boarded the vessel as soon as it docked. They were taken to Newark Liberty International Airport for a flight back to China, as per a Trump administration directive amid the global outbreak. No one aboard the ship is known to have the coronavirus, but that was no consolation to many passengers, who complained that crew members kept them in the dark about the threat in their midst.
