At least 732 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the US, including 21 on the Grand Princess cruise ship. Among the effects of the spreading virus: California's Santa Clara County, home to San Jose, has temporarily banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people after the county reported dozens of cases -- representing one of the widest such orders in the country. Skinner Consulting Inc https://gusskinnerconsulting.com subject to changes / amendments pg. 1 2 President Donald Trump on Monday said he has plans to help the cruise and airline industries that have been “hard hit” by an outbreak of the coronavirus, as his administration sent mixed signals over whether Americans should proceed with holiday cruise plans. “We’re working with them very, very strongly,” Trump told reporters, referring to airline and cruise line executives who have met with White House officials in recent days. He also said that the administration is talking to the hotel industry. “Some places actually will do well, and some places probably won’t do well at all,” the president said. Vice President Mike Pence said the administration would roll out details on Tuesday, and said it had requested major reforms to the cruise line industry. But it also threatens the health of one of South Florida’s largest and most iconic industries, responsible for nearly $9 billion in annual economic impact to Florida — most in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. That impact is now in doubt in the wake of the global Covid-19 outbreak. Fears about the disease and an oil price war sent stocks plummeting so dramatically Monday that trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted within minutes of the market’s opening bell. Trading resumed after a brief hiatus, but the breather wasn’t enough to halt the worst one-day point loss for the Dow Jones Industrial Average in history. While the overall market fell 7% Monday, cruise stocks plunged by 20% and more. Shares in Carnival Corp., the world’s largest carrier, fell 20%, while Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. dropped by 25% and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings plummeted by 27%. The three companies — the world’s largest public cruise holding companies — are all based in Miami-Dade. A State Department travel warning to Americans this past weekend could further rock their boats. Shares of Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean have dropped 60% to 70% since January as passengers have canceled trips and cruise lines have suspended voyages to Asia. Hundreds of passengers have been stuck on quarantined ships while others have questioned the coronavirus quarantine protocols while onboard. The U.S. State Department weighed in Sunday with a statement advising Americans to avoid cruise ships because of an "increased risk of infection of COVID- 19 in a cruise ship environment." Those tests later confirmed 21 cases of the COVID- 19 on board. Princess Cruises will have to follow authorities in the United States and once the vessel docks guest will be disembarking in order of priority. • Pandemic, Economy and Response Mechanism: an Overview
Policy Review Pandemic, Economy and Response Mechanism: An overview Sana Malik and Ali Rehmat July 2020 Abstract This policy review presents an overall overview of COVID-19 pandemic impact on health and economy in developed and developing countries. Besides, it highlights the key responses and measures taken so far to control the spread of the diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic seems to impact economy so hard that the global growth could be as low as 2%, along with drop in trade from 13% to 32%. In the US only, 22 million people applied for unemployment benefits. In Europe, services sector has crashed as lockdowns caused businesses closures. Similarly, Spain, France, and Germany have all recorded the lowest readings in their business surveys. In Pakistan, more than 25% of the population lives below the poverty line; it is estimated that poverty shall increase from 75 million to around 130 million in case of protracted lockdown. Moreover, the absence of universal health coverage may also force people to sell their possessions or get loans from informal moneylenders at manipulative rates. In this chaotic situation, the government should allocate more money for its health budget. Pakistan should take steps towards practical policies to tackle the further impact of COVID-19. Pakistan should keep digital database of all sorts of labourers (formal and informal) as it will help the government reach the poor and needy segments of the communities on time. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Methodology 3. Literature Review 3.1 Impact of COVID-19 on developed economies 3.2 Impact of COVID-19 on developing economies 4.
