Event Program Varian Arabians | Arroyo Grande, CA | 805.489.5802 www.varianarabians.com Welcome Welcome Friends, We are so pleased you are able to join us for our 1st Annual Varian Way Weekend! Varian Arabians is deeply committed to the foundational principles carved by Sheila Varian. “The Varian Way” is a way of life that combines a love for the land, a loyalty to tradition steeped in Vaquero heritage, a soft approach to horsemanship, and a hands-on methodology that challenges our own humanity as much as our horses. Thus the event replacing the long-running annual Summer Jubilee is called The Varian Way Weekend, and will feature a handful of new eperiences focusing on the principles, lifestyle and education of The Varian Way, along with some of the most beloved experiences of the Summer Jubilee, such as the treasured Mare Walk. We believe that The Varian Way is a timeless tradition, and it is now our privilege and responsibility to see it through for generations to come. Thank you for joining us for this historic new chapter of Varian Arabians. We hope you fiind this weekend to be inspirational, provocative and educational in your journey with the Arabian horse. Her historic win at the 1961 Reined Cow Horse World Championships at the Cow Palace in San Francisco gave her iconic status in the Quarter horse-dominated world of cow horse competition, being the first and only woman, the first amateur, and the first Arabian horse to ever win that prestigious award. Ask any cowboy today if he knows of Sheila Varian, and you’ll probably get a tip of the hat. Aptly, she was inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2003, alongside legends like Annie Oakley and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. And though her long career started in training horses, her accomplishments in breeding them are even more impeccable. From initiating a surge of importations from Poland at the height of communist occupation, to bringing up a 2-year-old colt named Bay-Abi and opening the minds of breeders to experiment with outcrossing, Sheila always demonstrated profound vision for what could be. Largely, she was always correct. The birth of Bay-Abi’s son, Bay El Bey, in 1972 is perhaps the most significant occasion in modern Arabian history. He changed the breed forever. Yet still, beyond all her accomplishments, her intangible qualities are what set her apart. Her wisdom, leadership, wit, inspiration, character and pioneering spirit have enraptured every person lucky enough to cross her path. She leaves our world and our breed a better place because she was a part of it. May she rest in peace, and her legacy live on forever. Long Live the V. 3 clinicians Ron Copple – The Varian Way Weekend Guest Clinician Ron has been training and showing Arabian and half-Arabian horses since 1996, with numerous Regional and National wins in the Western and Hunter Pleasure divisions. His background with horses started with his family as a child, and the horses continue to be the driving force behind his love for the profession. Over the eyars he has learned from several nationally known trainers including Larry Lewis Jr. and Brett and Marjie Becker. Upon one’s first exchange with Ron, it is apparent that he shares the same quiet hand and guiding principles of horsemanship that Sheila did. It made them a good pair; Sheila entrusted many of her national-level performance prospects into Ron’s hands, fully confidant in his consistent ability to train them respectfully and in a team-oriented environment. Ron’s own personal story is one that has inspired many around him. In the fall of 2004, Ron was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. So loved was he by his peers that a non-profit organization called the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund was established to support Ron and offer him funding to cover the extenuating expenses not covered by insurance in the rigors of his aggressive treatment. Today, Ron has achieved full recovery and is one of the Fund’s most notable spokespersons. His love for life, people and horses is evident in every interaction, and he will most certainly deliver a series of clinics this weekend that will leave guests inspired and educated in their horsemanship journey on The Varian Way. www.CoppleShowHorses.com 4 BREEDING INFO All of us at Varian Arabians are committed to you, the breeder, to work with you to achieve your goals in breeding for the best possible foal(s), and to meet your needs with respect to the type of foal you’re breeding for. He is extremely charismatic with huge black eyes, a lovely, expressive face, long well-hinged neck, short back, snow-white color, and a tail carriage that is truly exceptional. With all of Audacious’ showy attitude one won’t find a sweeter or kinder stallion. With brief under saddle training at the age of ten years with Ron Copple, Audacious took to training as though he was a three year old. Varian Arabians had been looking for a stallion to breed back into the *Jullyen El Jamaal daughters as well as the Desperado V, Maclintock V and Bravado Bey V daughters for five years and we are thrilled to have finally found a stallion that could live up to the requirements of Varian Arabians....
