Bayhawks Aquire Veteran Attackman Bayhawks Aquire Veteran Attackman Posted by TBN On 02/18/2012 The Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today they have acquired veteran attackman John Grant Jr through a trade with Long Island. In exchange the Lizards received Chesapeake’s second round pick in the 2013 Collegiate Draft and the rights to attackman Matt Gibson who was acquired by the Bayhawks in the 2012 Collegiate Draft. The University of Delaware Alum and Peterborough, Ontario native started his MLL career with the Rochester Rattlers in their inaugural season (2001). In his first year, Grant finished second in the league with 59 points (41 goals, 3 two-pointers, 15 assists) in 14 games. He was also named an MLL All-Star and earned league Offensive Player of the Year honors. After a two year hiatus from the MLL, Grant returned to the Rattlers in 2005. “John Grant, Jr is one of the best talents lacrosse has ever seen,” Bayhawks’ general manager Brian Reese stated. “He is going to compliment the group we have and be another great finisher on our offensive end. We have a lot of respect for what John has accomplished in his career and are excited to have him on the roster this season.” In 2007, Grant broke the league's single-season points record with 71 points was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second time, and was awarded the Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player Award. In 2008, Grant led the league in scoring with 64 points (47 goals, 4 two-pointers, 13 assists) and was named the 2008 Bud Light MLL Most Valuable Player for the second time. Grant led the Rattlers to their first Steinfeld Trophy with a 16-6 win over Denver in the 2008 MLL Championship. Grant, the Rattlers franchise, and roster were transferred to the Toronto (later Hamilton) Nationals when the franchise was bought by a new ownership group in 2009. In 2011 it was Grant was traded to the Long Island Lizards. “After speaking with John, it is apparent that he is willing to do whatever it takes to help the Bayhawks win an MLL Championship,” head coach and president Dave Cottle said. “Both Brian Reese and I have watched him play in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) this winter and he is playing at an extremely high level. The Chesapeake region will have a chance to watch one of the best players to ever play lacrosse.” Copyright © 2021 thebaynet.com. All rights reserved. Page 1.

  • New Kids on the Block
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK IN ITS INAUGURAL SEASON IN THE MAJOR LACROSSE LEAGUE, THE HAMILTON NATIONALS ARE GETTING BETTER AS TIME GOES ON // By Roger Lajoie here is no doubt that the Hamilton T Nationals are a work in progress. Playing in a new venue and in a new city, and armed with a lineup filled with young players, everyone agreed that it was going to take some time for the Nationals to fully develop into a contending team. That’s just the way it works with a young team in transition. But the development is coming along just fine and after a rocky start to the season, the Nationals are clearly a team on the move as the Major Lacrosse League (MLL) season heads into its final month. “We started slow, but with more than 10 rookies in the lineup we expected that,” says Jody Gage, the Nationals’ general manager. “There is such a difference between box lacrosse and field lacrosse, and an even bigger Photos courtesy of the Hamilton Nationals of Photos courtesy difference maybe between college field lacrosse and a pro league like this. We’re start- ing to pick it up as our young guys get used to this league and it shows in the results.” It certainly has. After a 1-3 start to the sea- son the Nationals won three straight games and appear to be a team buoyed with confi- dence as it heads to the stretch run of the MLL season and hopefully a playoff spot. “I believe in my guys,” says head coach Regy Thorpe.

  • 2012 Boston Cannons Media Guide
2012 Media Guide About Major League Lacrosse BACKGROUND: During the summer of 1998, Jake “Body By Jake” Steinfeld was inspired to start a professional outdoor lacrosse league after reading a magazine article about the growth of the sport of lacrosse. Steinfeld sought out a contributor to the article, Owner and President of Warrior Lacrosse Dave Morrow, a leading lacrosse equipment manufacturer, to discuss formation of such a league. In February 1999 Steinfeld and Morrow joined forces with Steinfeld’s friend and business associate Tim Robertson, Chairman of Bay Shore Enterprises and former CEO of the Family Channel, to form Major League Lacrosse, LLC, a Virginia limited liability company. In 2003, New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. came on board as a Founding Member of Major League Lacrosse, as well as an Anchor Level League Sponsor. Major League Lacrosse began play in 2001 to capitalize on the growing demand for world-class field lacrosse driven by dramatic growth in the U.S. lacrosse market. The MLL was praised and heralded for its on-field play, regarded as the best ever seen. With a year-on-year attendance increase, Major League Lacrosse has continued to lead the sport of lacrosse into the mainstream of competitive team sports. OUR TEAMS: MLL is comprised of eight teams across the US and Canada. The Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, and Chesapeake Bayhawks (formerly Baltimore and Washington) have been members of the League since its inception in 2001. The Denver Outlaws began play in 2006 as part of the League’s western expansion. The Hamilton Nationals (formerly Toronto) joined MLL in 2009 as the League’s first international team.
