    THE DON LEE-COLUMBIA SYSTEM: By Mike Adams 111 Sutter Street was not the only network broadcast address during the thirties. The other was 1000 Van Ness Avenue, the Don Lee Cadillac Building, headquarters for KFRC and the Don Lee-Columbia Network. It was there that another radio legend was born. Don Lee was a prominent Los Angeles automobile dealer, who had owned all the Cadillac and LaSalle dealerships in the State of California for over 20 years. After making a substantial fortune in the auto business, he decided to try his hand at broadcasting.1 In 1926, he purchased KFRC in San Francisco from the City of Paris department store. The following year he bought KHJ in Los Angeles and connected the two stations by telephone line to establish the Don Lee Broadcasting System. From the beginning, Lee spared no expense to make these two stations among the finest in the nation, as a 1929 article from Broadcast Weekly attests: Both KHJ and KFRC have large complete staffs of artists, singers and entertainers, with each station having its own Don Lee Symphony Orchestra, dance band and organ, plus all of the musical instruments that can be used successful in broadcasting. It is no idle boast that either KHJ or KFRC could operate continuously without going outside their own staffs for talent, and yet give a variety with an appeal to every type of audience.[2] In 1929, CBS still had no affiliates west of the Rockies, and this was making it difficult for the network to compete with its larger rival, NBC.

    Vaudeville and the Last Encore By Marlene Mitchell February, 1992 William Mitchell, his wife Pearl Mitchell, and John Mitchell 1 Vaudeville and the Last Encore By Marlene Mitchell February, 1992 Vaudeville was a favorite pastime for individuals seeking clean entertainment during the early part of the 20th century. The era of vaudeville was relatively short because of the creation of new technology. Vaudeville began around 1881 and began to fade in the early 1930s.1 The term vaudeville originated in France.2 It is thought that the term vaudeville was from “Old French vaudevire, short for chanson du Vaux de Vire, which meant popular satirical songs that were composed and presented during the 15th century in the valleys or vaux near the French town of Vire in the province of Normandy.”3 How did vaudeville begin? What was vaude- ville’s purpose and what caused its eventual collapse? This paper addresses the phenomenon of vaudeville — its rise, its stable but short lifetime, and its demise. Vaudeville was an outgrowth of the Industrial Revolution, which provided jobs for peo- ple and put money in their pockets.4 Because of increased incomes, individuals began to desire and seek clean, family entertainment.5 This desire was first satisfied by Tony Pastor, who is known as the “father of vaudeville.”6 In 1881 Pastor opened “Tony Pastor’s New Fourteenth Street Theatre” and began offering what he called variety entertainment.7 Later B. F. Keith, who is called the “founder of vaudeville,” opened a theater in Boston and expanded on Pastor’s original variety concept.8 Keith was the first to use the term “vaudeville” when he opened his theater in Boston in 1894.9 Keith later joined with E.

The selections were made following a year of study during which input from broadcast professionals, fans and historians was weighed to establish criteria and nominees for enshrinement. Among the first inductees are pioneers from the earliest period of local radio development nearly a century ago, as well as popular personalities from the modern era. Many of the names, such as Don Sherwood and Tom Donahue, may be instantly recognizable. Others, such as Colin B. Kennedy and Harrison Holliway, may be less so. In either case, it is hoped that the creation of the Hall of Fame will help to honor the men and women who have made Bay Area radio so popular over the years, and will make their names and accomplishments known for generations to come. For the near future, the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame will exist primarily on the Internet at www.barhof.com, although a permanent exhibit is planned at the old KRE radio studios in Berkeley, which are being refurbished by the California Historical Radio Society (CHRS). The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame is spearheaded by the Bay Area Radio Museum, which is an affiliate of the Broadcast & Newspaper Museum of Northern California consortium, which also includes CHRS and the Broadcast Legends.     The RTOS Story As told by the following brief history, the Rochester Theater Organ Society (RTOS) story is one of inspiration, luck, near failure, community involvement, perseverance and untold hours of dedication and hard work by an unstoppable band of enthusiasts and volunteers, all having the common goal of saving an important piece of Rochester's musical history through the preservation and presentation of a magnificent Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. RTOS Story - In the Beginning In the beginning there was an organ, a theatre, and an organist. Wurlitzer Opus 1951 was built at the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company factory in North Tonawanda, NY in the summer of 1928. At that time the 2916-seat Keith-Albee Palace Theatre (later renamed RKO Palace) was well on its way to completion on Clinton Avenue North and Mortimer Street in Rochester, NY. A native of Great Britain, Tom Grierson had experience playing organs in St Louis, Brooklyn and Buffalo, and eventually settled in Rochester. Here he had held several church organist positions and played engagements at several local theatres before being retained to play at what would soon become Rochester's most beautiful movie palace. Tom custom designed the organ, a 4-manual, 21-rank, ‘special’ which was probably shipped by rail to Rochester on September 12, 1928. Installation took three months and local lore suggests that due to Tom’s close relationship with Wurlitzer (he recorded many organ player rolls for them) and since Rochester was only a short distance from the factory, that the organ was the recipient of voicing and regulating services not afforded most Wurlitzer installations.

    Silent Film Music and the Theatre Organ Thomas J. Mathiesen Introduction Until the 1980s, the community of musical scholars in general regarded film music-and especially music for the silent films-as insignificant and uninteresting. Film music, it seemed, was utili­ tarian, commercial, trite, and manipulative. Moreover, because it was film music rather than film music, it could not claim the musical integrity required of artworks worthy of study. If film music in general was denigrated, the theatre organ was regarded in serious musical circles as a particular aberration, not only because of the type of music it was intended to play but also because it represented the exact opposite of the characteristics espoused by the Orgelbewegung of the twentieth century. To make matters worse, many of the grand old motion picture theatres were torn down in the fifties and sixties, their music libraries and theatre organs sold off piecemeal or destroyed. With a few obvious exceptions (such as the installation at Radio City Music Hall in New (c) 1991 Indiana Theory Review 82 Indiana Theory Review Vol. 11 York Cityl), it became increasingly difficult to hear a theatre organ in anything like its original acoustic setting. Ably led by Paul F. Doering, the Anni­ versary Committee worked nine months on the project. This writer participated in two TV spots on Channel 10, and coverage by of QT00 other media also heralded the event. Organist of the evening was Don Scott, protege of Rochester's Mr. Theatre Organ, Tom Grier­ son. Appropriately, Don had played the opening concert at the Auditorium on Janu­ Auditorium ary 21, 1967. Following intermission, former RTOS di­ rector and program chairman Don Hall was MC for a segment of recognition. Three others, Daniel and Oline Schultz and Dan Suter were unable to be pre­ sent. The names of 50 charter members were read, and a sprinkling of those present stood to applause. A plaque was presented to Tem­ ple Civic Center's Board Chairman Raymond Beardsley and Auditorium Theatre General Manager John Moriarity recognizing 20 years of RTOS-TCC liaison. It will be mounted in the inner lobby of the theatre. An anecdote contest supplied stories of humorous, embarrassing and unusual hap­ penings to RTOS during the past 20 years. Following the final organ number, an on­ stage reception was held featuring a cake shaped in the form of a theatre organ console.
