SUMMARY This study for the Illinois Trail examines the feasibility and desirabil;t\ of establishing, as a component of the national trails system, a trail "extending from the Lewis and Clark Trail at Wood River, Illinois, to the Chicago Portage National Historic Site, generally fol lowing the 111 i noi s Riv er and the 111 inois and Michigan Canal. 11 A proposed trai I could be authorized as either a national scenic trail or as a national historic trail. An evaluation of the significance of the scenic·, recreational, natural, and cultural resources along the study route and the historic use of the 1llinois Waterway concluded that the route meets the criteria for both national scenic and national historic trails. -

Transportationtransportation City of Elmhurst Comprehensive Plan TransporTATion Elmhurst’s transportation system consists of an extensive roadway network, including direct access to Interstate High- ways I-290, I-294, and I-88, an extensive commuter rail and bus transit system, as well as a well-connected pedestrian and bike network. This transportation network allows for easy and accessible travel within the City and excellent con- nections to the surrounding metropolitan area. Elmhurst’s interstate highway and commuter rail access are among its strongest assets, making it a very desirable community for living and conducting business. Therefore, maintain- ing a well-functioning and efficient transportation system is critical to sustaining the high quality-of-life in the com- munity. A review of existing conditions, including average daily traffic and transit ridership history, formed the basis for the development of the transportation framework and functional street classification. Blankenhorn, Secretary FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: August 20, 2015 Guy Tridgell 312.793.4199 Weekend Closures for Byrne Flyover Work Start Friday CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation today reminded motorists that four weekends of lane closures on the expressway system surrounding the Jane Byrne Interchange in Chicago will begin this Friday. “We have worked closely with the City of Chicago to make sure these upcoming weekends run as smoothly as possible,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn. “We wish to stress that Chicago remains open for business and people should continue to enjoy all the city has to offer. But they do need to plan accordingly, account for some longer travel times and should strongly consider taking alternate routes or public transportation, especially if they are driving during the overnight hours.” The closures are necessary for the installation of steel beams that will support the deck of the new flyover bridge linking the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway (westbound Interstate 90/94) to the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (westbound Interstate 290), part of the larger overhaul of the Jane Byrne Interchange. To stage and store equipment and materials, the inbound Kennedy Expressway (eastbound Interstate 90/94) ramp to inbound Congress Parkway closed Wednesday night and will remain closed until Aug. 31. A detour route is posted utilizing the Roosevelt Road exit, Jefferson Street, Harrison Street and Wells Street to connect with Congress Parkway. Blankenhorn, Secretary FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CONTACT: November 27, 2017 Gianna Urgo 312.814.4693 Guy Tridgell 312.793.4199 Public Meeting for Updated I-55 Managed Lanes Project CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation will host a public meeting Dec. 6 to share updates and collect feedback on proposed changes to the Interstate 55 managed lanes project. The department recently updated the project plans to include a second managed lane in each direction of I-55 between Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) and Interstate 90/94 (Dan Ryan Expressway). The meeting will be in an open-house format at the following time and location: Wednesday, Dec. 6 4 – 7 p.m. Toyota Park Stadium Club 7000 Harlem Ave. Bridgeview, Ill. 60455 The state received federal approval in 2016 to build one managed lane in each direction of I-55 between Interstate 355 near Bolingbrook to I-90/94 in Chicago. The revised project proposes to add the second managed lane north of the Tri-State Tollway within the existing IDOT right of way. The additional capacity will make it easier to maintain consistent, reliable speeds and travel times for all I-55 users. No funding has been identified for construction, but IDOT continues to pursue the project as a public-private partnership. Exhibits will be on display and an audio-visual presentation will be shown continuously during the meeting. Project team members will be available to discuss the project and answer questions. Answers to Trivia Trail Greenbelt Forest Preserve September 2020 1. 595 acres per the LCFPD webpage and the Countywide Map & Guide: LCFPD.org/Greenbelt 2. A need for open space in a densely populated part of the county was the main reason for acquiring the land that became Greenbelt Forest Preserve. The name reflects this need for a “greenbelt” within an urbanized center. Refer to Trivia Trail sign #1. 3. The native Potawatomi referred to the Skokie River as “Chewab Skokie” or “big wet prairie” for its seasonal flooding: LCFPD.org/NativeAmericanPlaceNames 4. Prairie dock. 5. Green Bay Road (est. 1832) became the first conduit for settlers to travel into the newly opened northeastern Illinois. In 1836, the first stagecoach service began on the road carrying mail and passengers between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 6. The first African American settler in Lake County, Illinois was Amos Bennett (the older brother of Alfred Bennett). Amos Bennett was born a freeman in Delhi, New York in 1797. Bennett settled in today’s Gurnee, Illinois in 1835: LCFPD.org/AmosBennett 7. In May 1837, John Dugdale (1787-1873) and his family settled on land in today’s Greenbelt Forest Preserve. The Dugdales were Irish immigrants from County Meath, Ireland. Dugdale Road along the east side of Greenbelt is named for this family, and Dugdale Lake is named after the road. 8. The suggestions will be judged by a committee of artists, and the conditions will be announced later on.” [2] Terracotta, White; “The Tribune’s” suggestion for ”municipal colors”. The Tribune announces the winner of the “municipal color” contest: Alfred Jensen Roewad, engineer and architect working in the World’s Fair Bureau of Construction. The Tribune modi- fied Roewad’s “red and white” winning entry to “terra-cotta and white”. Prominent in this article are illustrations by F.D. Pete Segall. The Voice of Chicago in the 20th Century: A Selective Bibliographic Essay. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S degree. December, 2006. 66 pages. Advisor: Dr. David Carr Examining the literature of Chicago in the 20th Century both historically and critically, this bibliography attempts to find commonalities of voice in a list of selected works. The paper first looks at Chicago in a broader context, focusing particularly on perceptions of the city: both Chicago’s image of itself and the world’s of it. A series of criteria for inclusion in the bibliography are laid out, and with that a mention of several of the works that were considered but ultimately disqualified or excluded. Before looking into the Voice of the city, Chicago’s history is succinctly summarized in a bibliography of general histories as well as of seminal and crucial events. The bibliography searching for Chicago’s voice presents ten books chronologically, from 1894 to 2002, a close examination of those works does reveal themes and ideas integral to Chicago’s identity. Notes on the Design and Execution of the Painting, Iconic Landscapes of Chicago Craig D. Farnsworth, ASLA [email protected] Copyright 2009 Artist’s Statement This painting grew out of a desire to create a poster to commemorate two significant events of 2009 in Chicago: the Centennial of the Plan of Chicago and the ASLA Annual Meeting. The piece is intended to portray the context within which Windy City landscape architects design and execute their projects. It was also designed to be compatible with the ASLA Centennial poster I had painted ten years prior that commemorated significant landscapes of Illinois. This new painting picks up where the first one left off; it focuses on the Chicago parks that were mentioned but not illustrated in the earlier piece. Architecture and Landscape Chicago is a city recognized worldwide for its role in defining architecture. Indeed, the “Chicago School” is a term that is well understood to be a touchstone of Modern design. It is clear that in this context, designs on the land are often framed and defined by architecture. While this is not necessarily unique to Chicago, the personalities and imagery of city architecture are so pervasive and well-documented that they are a part of the local landscape. Given the wealth of historic parks in the city – parks that have stood the test of time and become significant in the eyes of the public – one of the first decisions made was how comprehensive the piece could be in documenting the parks and their designers.
