A Salute to Sun Records Starring Robert Shaw and the Lonely Street Band January 11-12, 2014 (December 20, 2013, Tucson, Arizona); IT continues its 43rd anniversary season with Good Rockin' LIVE! A Salute to Sun Records Starring Robert Shaw and the Lonely Street Band. This live concert event pays tribute to the birth of rock and roll and the music legends that Sun Records helped propel to stardom. In 1952, Sun Studios opened up shop in a small storefront in Memphis, TN, setting off a chain of events that would change the course of musical history. In a few short years, this little record company produced superstars such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and B.B. King. "Good Rockin' LIVE!" stars Tucson favorite Robert Shaw from the Chicago and New York casts of the hit musical "Million Dollar Quartet," and features Ross Martinie Eiler and Eric Brown with the Lonely Street Band. With hits like "Great Balls of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues," "That's All Right, Mama," and "Blue Suede Shoes," this show tells the tale of how rock was born through the music and stories of those who lived it. IT takes its name from the invisible energy that flows between a performer and audience, creating the magic of theatre. Started in 1971 as an arena for local playwrights, the theatre has expanded its programs to include adaptations of classics and recent Off- Broadway plays and musicals, while continuing to encourage new playwrights through both full productions and stage readings. Under the leadership of Managing Artistic Director Susan Claassen, Associate Artistic Director James Blair, and Associate Producer Cathy Johnson, IT is strongly committed to community service and outreach programs. The company's current season includes a six play Main Stage season, many special events, Project Pastime – an educational theatre program for the mentally challenged including a video workbook and seminars that encourage community dialogue. The Invisible Theatre, the recipient of the first Arizona Theatre Association Award for Best Producing Theatre Company, is a member of the Theatre Communications Group and has long enjoyed both local and national recognition for its strong leadership role in the arts community. Productions take place in an intimate 80-seat converted laundry building. IT celebrates this season with an even greater commitment to professionalism, artistic excellence, accessibility, freedom of expression, diverse programming and creative challenge – thus making the Invisible Theatre a very visible force in Tucson's cultural community. (more) 2 ABOUT THE PEOPLE ROBERT SHAW (Vocals, Guitar) who was born in Southeast Indiana and raised in a musical family, began performing at a young age. He grew up singing and acting and developed an early knack for being able to envision the “big picture” when he was involved with a production. Robert studied at the University of The Arts in Philadelphia and has been performing professionally his entire adult life at venues which include Derby Dinner Playhouse, Disneyland, The Gaslight Theatre, and has performed with both the Chicago and New York casts of Broadway’s smash-hit musical “Million Dollar Quartet.” He founded Lonely Street Productions in 2005 in Tucson, AZ to handle the business end of a rapidly growing concert production company; the company has now grown into a full-service national entertainment corporation. In addition to performing regularly, Robert has produced over 1000 concert productions and regularly collaborates on the conception, development, direction, music-direction, and design of all the entertainment properties in the company’s stable. ROSS MARTINIE EILER (Vocals, Piano) works with the homeless in Bloomington, Indiana where he also plays with his band The 123’s. Ross is a husband, father, beekeeper, and chess enthusiast. He struggles with the recorder and with growing a beard. ERIC BROWN (Vocals, Guitar) is a 12-year veteran of the music business and has been involved in many facets of the industry. He has toured the world with his various musical projects, playing festivals, theatres, casinos, and everything in between. With dozens of albums to his credit as producer, writer, and/or musician, Eric also writes and performs his own songs and fronts "Eric Brown and the L Street Band" which performs music by Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. He came on board with Lonely Street Productions in 2010 and currently oversees Lonely Street’s business and financial operations. (www.ericbrownandthelstreetband.com) (more) 3 GOOD ROCKIN’ LIVE! • Rock-A My Soul Is a Most Engaging Handbook for All Whose Faith Is Intertwined with Popular Music
“Rock-a My Soul is a most engaging handbook for all whose faith is intertwined with popular music. In friendly prose for seekers of all kinds, David Nantais shows that concert halls and music collections are the postmodern mangers where new and enduring spiritual identities are being born. And to this scene of new birth he comes bearing guitars, drums, bass—and a vivid appreciation for the importance of mystery and mystical experience. An impassioned traveling companion!” — Tom Beaudoin Associate Professor of Theology Fordham University “A tension between the worldly and the spiritual has existed in rock ’n’ roll since its foundations in African-American spirituals, gospel, and blues music. But for Catholic drummer Nantais, the very music often feared by religious folk has served as both balm and outlet to help him understand God. In this short, first-person musing, Nantais argues that ‘theology can be done through music,’ encouraging Christians to see rock ’n’ roll as a ‘mode of theological expression.’ Setting aside contemporary Christian music (which he says is not the only way to marry rock and religion), he argues that mainstream rock has many virtues: community building and transcendent elements, meditative qualities, expression of emotion. Nantais admits to some less edifying aspects of rock (e.g., segregated crowds at rock music venues, ties to consumerism). He also chooses not to address a major sticking point for some—offensive lyrics— and so may not be able to convince every reader of rock’s merits. Despite that, his enthusiasm for mix tapes and chord progressions is infectious. Christians will learn to find God in a rock concert, and lovers of all things drum and guitar will find spiritual validation.” — Publishers Weekly “David Nantais is, hands down, one of the best young writers on Christian spirituality: inviting, inventive, and insightful.

  • An American History of Rock and Roll F
Created in collaboration with Los Angeles United School District teacher Brian Fritch, “An American History of Rock and Roll” is a High School course drawing entirely upon the materials freely available at Teachrock.org. The course integrates the history of the United States from the 1950s on with the history of American popular music. In taking the course, students consider how genres such as Rock and Roll, Pop, Folk, Latin, and Hip Hop have both reflected and informed the cultural, social, and political developments that have occurred in the past 7 decades of U.S. History. The course is divided into four chronological units, with each unit containing approximately 20 media-rich lessons from TeachRock.org. The course culminates in a project-based capstone activity in which students teams create their own short documentary film. The course will span 1-2 semesters, depending on how many lessons the teacher seeks to use in each unit. Teachers can also supplement the curriculum with additional collections TeachRock offers. For instance, lessons from CNN Soundtracks Collection can be drawn upon to teach more recent moments in U.S. History, from Hurricane Katrina to 9/11 to the Stonewall Rebellion to the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The Music that Shaped America Curriculum focuses on U.S. History before the 20th Century, with particular focus on issues of slavery and abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. TeachRock’s Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World collection examines U.S. History from the Native American point of view, with lessons on Wounded Knee, the Red Power Movement, and the history of cultural appropriation.

Contact: [email protected] ”Rock Music Scholarship,” ACA/PCA 2007, Rock in the Academy panel, 4/7/07 Monica Berger, New York City College of Technology, CUNY [email protected] My challenge is to take my master’s thesis, a lengthy annotated bibliography of academic monographs on rock in American culture, and make it come alive and, in the process, provide a sense of how the academic rock discourse has evolved. A question to consider is why is rock music such fertile ground for so many methods and so much interdisciplinary work? No one individual or discipline owns the scholarly discourse on rock. How useful is it to consider only monographs? Periodical literature may be more current but it is more specialized as well. The indexing of academic journal literature on rock is problematic. Music indexes are poorly designed and limited by discipline. General and humanities indexes are overly broad. By limiting my study to monographs, I am looking at the “tip of the iceberg” but that tip is significant. I can easily identify academic luminaries as well as the broadest range of disciplines and methods, and, get a sense of the history of “rock in the academy.” 1969 represents the birth of pop culture studies under Ray Browne and the creation of the PCA.

  • WDAM Radio's History of Elvis Presley
Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes. This collection is divided into four parts: (1) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S singles hits in chronological order – (2) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S and U K singles, the original versions of these songs by other artists, and hit versions by other artists of songs that Elvis Presley recorded first or had a cover hit – in chronological order, along with relevant parody/answer tunes – (3) Songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley – mostly, but not all in chronological order – and (4) X-rated or “adult-themed” songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley.

ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week Two: Rock’n’Roll Takes Off Recommended Listening: Bill Haley & His Comets, The Best Of Bill Haley & His Comets: 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection (MCA). Basic primer of his mid-1950s hits, including "Rock Around the Clock" and his first Top Ten pop hit, 1954's "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Elvis Presley, Elvis at Sun (BMG, 2004). Both sides of all five of the singles Elvis Presley did for Sun records in 1954 and 1955, along with some outtakes. These were the recordings that, more than other, gave birth to rockabilly. Though they predate his rise to international superstardom in 1956, many critics consider these his finest recordings, and some consider them the very finest in all of rock'n'roll. A fuller document of Presley’s pre-1956 recordings, including many live performances of varying fidelity and studio outtakes, is on the three-CD box set A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings. Various Artists, The Doo Wop Box (Rhino, 1994). Although this four-CD box goes all the way up to the mid-1960s, the first disc covers important hits from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s that were crucial to establish the black R&B vocal group sound. Especially important ones were the Crows' "Gee," the Chords' "Sh- Boom," and the Penguins' "Earth Angel," all of which were big pop hits in 1953 and 1954, before "Rock Around the Clock." Two subsequent four-CD box doo wop box sets on Rhino include much other material from both this era and post-1955.
