He concluded that they had an approximate duration of fifty years and that they passed like waves through phases of growth followed by others of deflation. Kondratieff also considered that the crisis of capitalism did not mean its demise, since it lives in a permanent state of change, mutating and adapting unceasingly to new circumstances. The end of one cycle means the beginning of another, but it does not guarantee the end of the system. His research was repudiated by the Soviet nomenklatura. As Paul Mason reminds us, it constituted a threat to a state that imagined itself to have overcome the capitalist phase of history.1 Kondratieff was imprisoned, and eight years later, on the day his sentence expired, he was tried and condemned once more. A firing squad executed him in his cell on September 17, 1938. Kondratieff’s tragic biography illustrates the extreme intolerance with which the Soviet state repressed any position that questioned its conceptual foundations. We know full well that political intransigence was a constant throughout the twentieth century. It occurs in régimes of varying ideological shades and is accentuated at moments of acute crisis—that is, in the closing stages of those long waves of which the Russian economist spoke. Literal comparisons of the current context with the one experienced by Kondratieff may well denote a certain mental indolence.

The Media Campaign Stephen Ward and Dominic Wring The 2017 General Election will likely be remembered as the campaign where the once dominant forms of TV and print journalism were challenged by digital platforms. This piece analyses this development while also acknowledging that social media networks do not operate in isolation from their more traditional counterparts and content is often shared between them. That said, digital networks did provide Labour Party supporters with significant opportunities to challenge and rebut claims made by the Conservative- dominated press during this campaign. A significant amount of this material focused on the merits (or not) of the two major rival parties and most especially their leaders. In comparison, other politicians received considerably less attention than in 2015. The 2017 media campaign was not expected to showcase the kinds of innovation or generate the many surprises it subsequently provided. Its unexpected calling meant there was minimal time for campaign planning. In media terms, the rival platforms were often portrayed as though they were operating in parallel universes. So- called traditional media, especially newspapers, were seeking to appeal to older core voters and seen as relentlessly negative, anti-Jeremy Corbyn and pro- Conservative. By contrast, social media was viewed as a vibrant sphere dominated by young, left-leaning voices with a heavily pro-Corbyn agenda. In the aftermath, it could be argued that 2017 marked a watershed moment, one where social media finally proved its electoral worth and the power of the press was significantly challenged.

    Ellen Meiksins Wood Lecture Paul Mason Thank you Ed, and thank you to the Broadbent Institute for inviting me. It’s normal to begin a prize lecture with a eulogy to the person in whose honour it’s being given. I will speak about Ellen Meiksins Wood’s invaluable contribution to political science in a moment. But I want to start with the words of George Orwell. In June 1940, during the Dunkirk crisis, when the British elite was in a complete panic, Orwell wrote in his diary about a conversation with the left-wing poet Stephen Spender. “Don’t you feel” says Spender, “that any time during the past ten years you have been able to foretell events better than, say, the Cabinet?” Orwell agreed, saying it was not about the left having a crystal ball but “in the power to grasp what kind of world we are living in”. i You couldn’t predict in what exact form the global crisis would break out; but you knew what kinds of surprises and catastrophes were on the agenda. The problem was, it was a skill that completely eluded mainstream politicians. The liberal and conservative elites, as well as most social democrats, had completely lost the power to grasp what kind of world they were living in during the 1930s. But the dictators and the demagogues understood it all too well. They were for a time masters of it. Now: does this remind you of anything? Because it should.
