Junk Percussion Ideas

Use items from the kitchen – plastic tubs, pots and pans, empty milk or water bottles, use pasta or rice in bottles or containers to make shakers. Use wooden and plastic spoons and utensils as beaters.

Composition Prompts

Being “Sent to Coventry” – what does it mean? Why would it happen? How would you feel? Using the drum and bass backing tracks as inspiration devise a spoken word exploration of a character experiencing sending, or being sent, to Coventry. Think of emotions/actions – what has taken place to cause being sent or you sending someone.

IMPROVISATION ACTIVITY

Further info about Improvisation

What is improvisation? Where musicians take a chord or scale pattern that fits within the key signature of a piece of music and they make-up a melody/tune to play along as a soloist in the band. Piano and guitar players can choose to play melodies or a sequence of chord rhythms over the backing from the rest of the band.

We played our 12 bar blues piece in the key of F so the chord pattern goes like this: 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 | F F F F Bb Bb F F C7 Bb7 F F

So when in the chord of F start with FAC as the notes in that chord, then maybe add some joining notes F G A Bb C etc and have a go at adding in different rhythms and jumping around the pitches.

Remember – you can’t go wrong with improvisation as its your own ideas and original composition!
