From the Villa of the Sette Bassi to the Park of the Aqueducts Park of the Aqueduts This itinerary, which uses the city roads, leads to a beautiful green area crossed by no less than six Roman aqueducts, as well as one built in the Renaissance period. Beginning at the Villa of the Sette Bassi and taking the via Tuscolana northwards you come to Italy’s Hollywood, the film studios at Cinecittà and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, a film school established in the 1930s, for which the Tuscolano neighbourhood was famous. Continuing on the Circonvallazione Tuscolana to the junction with via Lemonia you reach one POI Distance of the entrances to the Park of the Aqueducts, with the impressive arches of the aqua Claudia 4 2.03 Km and aqua Anio novus aqueducts, superimposed, and the remains of the aqua Marcia, aqua Tepula and aqua Iulia. Here you can also admire the fascinating Romavecchia farmhouse, dating back to the Middle Poi Ages when this part of the countryside was called Old Rome. The area was crossed in antiquity by one of the great consular roads, the Via Latina, which ran almost parallel to the Appian Way southwards. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by E-space: Manchester Metropolitan University's Research Repository Issues of Gender in Muscle Beach Party (1964) Joan Ormrod, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK Muscle Beach Party (1964) is the second in a series of seven films made by American International Pictures (AIP) based around a similar set of characters and set (by and large) on the beach. The Beach Party series, as it came to be known, rode on a wave of surfing fever amongst teenagers in the early 1960s. The films depicted the carefree and affluent lifestyle of a group of middle class, white Californian teenagers on vacation and are described by Granat as, "…California's beautiful people in a setting that attracted moviegoers. The films did not 'hold a mirror up to nature', yet they mirrored the glorification of California taking place in American culture." (Granat, 1999:191) The films were critically condemned. The New York Times critic, for instance, noted, "…almost the entire cast emerges as the dullest bunch of meatballs ever, with the old folks even sillier than the kids..." (McGee, 1984: 150) Despite their dismissal as mere froth, the Beach Party series may enable an identification of issues of concern in the wider American society of the early sixties. The Beach Party films are sequential, beginning with Beach Party (1963) advertised as a "musical comedy of summer, surfing and romance" (Beach Party Press Pack). Beach Party was so successful that AIP wasted no time in producing six further films; Muscle Beach Party (1964), Pajama Party (1964) Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965) and The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966). -

Intersecting Axes: Narrative and Culture in Versions of the Lizzie Borden Story (A Performative Approach) Stephanie Miller PhD Department of English and Related Literature September 2010 Miller 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines versions of the story of 32-year-old New Englander Lizzie Andrew Borden, famously accused of axe-murdering her stepmother Abby and father Andrew in 1892. Informed by narrative and feminist theories, Intersecting Axes draws upon interdisciplinary, contemporary re-workings of Judith Butler’s concept of “performativity” to explore the ways in which versions of the Lizzie Borden story negotiate such themes as repetition and difference, freedom and constraint, revision and reprisal, contingency and determinism, the specific and the universal. The project emphasizes and embraces the paradoxical sense in which interpretations are both enabled and constrained by the contextual situation of the interpreter and analyzes the relationship between individual versions and the cultural constructs they enact while purporting to describe. Moving away from symptomatic reading and its psychoanalytic underpinnings to focus upon the interpretive frames by which our understandings of Lizzie Borden versions (and of narrative/cultural texts more broadly) are shaped, this project exposes the complex performative processes whereby meaning is created. The chapters of this thesis offer contextual readings of a short story by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, a ballet by Agnes de Mille, a made-for-television by Paul Wendkos, and a short story by Angela Carter to argue for the theoretical, political, narratological, cultural, and interpretive benefits of approaching the relationship between texts and contexts through a uniquely contemporary concept of performativity, bringing a valuable new perspective to current debates about the intersection of narrative and culture. -

Journal of American Studies of Turkey 35-36 (2012): 97-109 Gore Vidal’s Caligula (1979): Denying the Author Daniel O’Brien Gore Vidal’s involvement with and subsequent disownment of the film Caligula (1979) is well known. Produced in Italy and financed by Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione; it started as an ostensibly serious biopic of the infamous Roman emperor, scripted by Vidal, but ended up as a lurid blend of graphic violence and explicit sex. The focus of this article is not on Caligula itself, but an accompanying documentary, made at the time of the film’s production with Vidal’s participation. The prosaic title A Documentary on the Making of Gore Vidal’s Caligula (1981) is notable for apparently granting Vidal authorial ownership of the film. However, the content of the documentary, supervised by Guccione, subverts and questions this authorship, ultimately denying both Vidal’s entitlement to this position and the validity of the concept itself. My methodology includes debates on authorship in relation to the cinema, which have usually centered on the director and ideas of personal expression. As noted below, Vidal scorned the notion of directors as cinematic authors, or auteurs, regarding them as mere technicians who neither required nor displayed creative ability. However, A Documentary on the Making of Gore Vidal’s Caligula highlights opposing ideas of film authorship that befit further analysis. As Peter Wollen states, the concept of the auteur is linked to the French film journal Cahiers du Cinéma, which promoted the politique des auteurs during the 1950s, albeit in haphazard fashion (74, 77). -

APRIL IN PARIS, SPRINGTIME IN ROME by Manny Gonzalez, Plantation Bay Resort & Spa Part One: April in Paris [intended to be laid out like a scrapbook, with the pictures askew and the captions written in hand-printed letters, arrows leading into the pictures, and the like] It sounded like a good idea at the time – take three beautiful girls to the Continent. Experience April in Paris. Savor Springtime in Rome. The idea was born during a 2011 visit to Plantation Bay by Grace Glory Go (of the Philippine Star) and her French diplomat friend Thierry Mixa, who waxed eloquent on the glories of Paris in spring. Paris 0 [city and number in red print denotes a picture] Grace, Thierry, and Hannah – one of the three girls. Okay, so Hannah isn’t exactly beautiful. But she has a pleasant personality. Mabait pa. Then many things started going wrong. But, not to bore you with the details, finally, six months later and with the mishaps behind us, there we were, on a Segway tour of Paris. Paris 1 Geli Reyes, Manny Gonzalez, Hannah Patalinjug, and Zuri Almendras. The first thing the girls wanted to see was this prominent erection. However, in Paris’s famous Pere Lachaise cemetery, the girls (having gone shopping instead) missed this other, equally fascinating erection: Paris 2 Victor Noir was a 19th-century journalist who was shot dead one night. But, as the groin area of his death effigy shows, he was thinking happy thoughts when he bought a bullet. Today, women come from all over the world, around the clock, to leave him flowers, and kiss his [ahem].
