Chapter 24 M U M B A I Its Full Of Life Initially I found my stay in Mumbai very agonizing because the new environment was very disturbing. I had no accommodation, surroundings looked very dirty with slums, roads always with traffic jam and I was always worried to see the rushed nature of the city life; why every body is running and why they can’t programme their day in advance, so that they can pace their life and live peacefully. But now I feel very comfortable. I have one Government accommodation facing the sea at Hyderabad Estate Napean Sea, Priyadarshani Park for early morning jogging, good markets for shopping and slum is not that visible. Travelling is not that pain. Buses are well-connected, Taxis are available even in early hours and the place is very secured. In general, Mumbai if very safe, I see ladies travelling alone even in midnight, taxies are very safe, very just in charging the fares, never over charging and local trains are lifeline of Mumbai though over crowded often, but it is a real experience. Mumbai has a night life, very upmarket and budget restaurants are available. Roadside dhabas and fast food places offer quality food at a very affordable price. I have seen tourists are enjoying and time is no barrier. The city is comparable to Damascus, Cairo, Beirut, Tehran, London and our other cities in India should follow the Mumbai style. Best part of Mumbai I like the Sea and specially during monsoon, the cool breeze, Sunrise & Sunset from my room, Sea food restaurants and fashion designers collection in boutiques.

GAZETTEER OF INDIA HARYANA JIND HARYANA DISTRICT GAZETTEER JIND RAGHBIR SINGH, I.A.S., State Editor (Gazetteers) JEET RAM RANGA EDITOR (Gazetteers) HARYANA GAZETTEERS ORGANISATION REVENUE DEPARTMENT CHANDIGARH (INDIA) 1986 GOVERNMENT OF HARYANA Available from: The Controller Printing and Stationery, Haryana, Chandigarh (India) Price: Rs. Printed by: Controller of Printing and Stationery Department, Union Territroy, Chandigarh FOREWORD A district gazetteer is not merely a statistical report on the economic development in the district. It brings out all the facets of life in the district, depicting its history, geography and its people. It should thus prove of use to the administrators in knowing the district. The Jind district with its varied history of administration, lies west of kurukshetra and karnal districts. It is a land of legendary and the sacred Sarasvati. The town of Jind is believed to have been founded at the time of Mahabharata, when the Pandvas built a temple in honour of Jainti Devi (Goddess of victory). The town Jaintapuri grew up around the temple, which later got corrupted to Jind. The district has many places of pilgrimage. I am thankful to the Chief Minister and the Revenue Minister for the encouragement they gave to the Gazetteer staff. CHANDIGARH: April, 1986. L.C. GUPTA Financial Commissioner, Revenue, Haryana. PREFACE This volume is the sixth in the series of the revised District Gazetteers of Haryana. It has been prepared on the pattern laid down by the Government of India. Before Independence (1947), the district was under the different Princely States; jind and Safidon tahsils formed part of Jind State while Narwana tahsil formed a part of Princely State of Patiala.

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) Jahaj Kothi, Hisar Gallery view Showcase display Gallery view The Jahaj Kothi or the house in the form of a ship stands on the east of the town. George Thomas, a native of Ireland and the uncrowned ruler of the territory between Sirsa and Rohtak built this building for his residence in 1766. Owing to its isolated location, it gives an impression of a ship in the ocean (surrounded by a huge open area) and that is what justifies the name ‘Jahaj Kothi’. The museum housed in this structure has gallery as well as showcase display in the permissible movement area within the structure. The collection comprises of archaeological material from various Harappan sites, sculptures of various sites, historical sites artefacts and images of various excavation material and monuments of Haryana.
