Tolstoy's Modes of Communication As Moral Indices Author Title: Tolstoy’s Modes of Communication as Moral Indices Author: Alexei Pavlenko, Colorado College Leo Tolstoy’s life-long preoccupation with finding ever more honest and precise forms of communication is deeply connected to his religious and philosophical search for truth. The issue of the narrator’s inadequacy to communicate the fullness of his experience is foregrounded already in Childhood, especially in chapter “Verses” (Jones). In the Cossacks, War and Peace, and Anna Karenina, Tolstoy further deepens his exploration of various modes of verbal and non-verbal communication among his characters, as well as between the narrator and his audience. Characters’ ability to understand the other serves as an index of their moral development. Olenin’s failure to read his companions in Moscow and in the Caucasus is contrasted with Lukashka’s immediate and wordless communication with his dumb-and- deaf sister, Styopka. Napoleon’s arrogant language is opposed to Kutuzov’s silent understanding, and to Andrey Bolkonsky’s final trans-verbal vision. Kontstantin Levin experiences his best, most authentic moments when he communicates with his eyes and body language (with his dog Laska, the cow Pava, and his brother Nikolai), and hints at words (playing “secretary”) rather than using them when he makes his successful declaration to Kitty. Tolstoy’s paradoxical distrust of language is akin to – yet more thoroughgoing than – Rousseau’s dismissal of the written word as a supplement. Tolstoy’s characters and narrators are compromised and diminished by their language, which is rooted in and represents the “crude force” of the corrupt society. The preferred indirect modes of communication are central to Tolstoy’s concept of true art and its power to “infect.” .

During the last part of his life, his towering personality dominated the intellectual climate of Russia and the world to an unprecedented degree. His work, moreover, continues to be studied and admired. His views on art, literature, morals, politics, and life have never ceased to influence writers and thinkers all over the world. Such interest over the years has produced an immense quantity of books and articles about Tolstoy, his ideas, and his work. In Russia alone their number exceeded ten thousand some time ago (more than 5,500 items were published in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1957) and con­ tinues to rise.

In this course we will read War and Peace closely in its entirety. We will examine the origins of the novel in Tolstoy's early writing and consider the historical, political, and social contexts, both of the events described (the Napoleonic Wars) and the period fifty years later in which Tolstoy wrote War and Peace. The Chechens have a kernel family called dëzel1 (дёзел), consisting of a couple and their children. But this kernel family is not isolated from other relatives. Usually married brethren settled in the neighbourhood and cooperated. This extended family is called “ts'a” (цIа - “men of one house”); the word is etymologically connected with the word for “hearth”. The members of a tsa cooperated in agriculture and animal husbandry. Affiliated tsa make up a “neqe” or nek´´e (некъий - “people of one lineage”). Every neqe has a real ancestor. Members of a neqe can settle in one hamlet or in one end of a village. They can economically cooperate. The next group of relatives is the “gar“ (гар - “people of one branch“). The members of a gar consider themselves as affiliated, but this can be a mythological affiliation. The gars of some Chechen groups function like taips (s. below). Taip The main and most famous Chechen social unit is the “taip” (tajp, tayp, тайп) A taip is a group of persons or families cooperating economically and connected by patrilinear consanguineous affiliation. The members of a taip have equal rights2. In the Russian and foreign literature taips are usually designated as “clans”. For the Chechens the taip is a patrilinear exogam group of descendants of one ancestor. By examining every con­ tending system and by subjecting every body of thought to intense scrutiny, he was able at last to integrate his ideas into a very personal doctrine called tolstovstvo in Russian and referred to in these pages as Tolstoyism. Between Tolstoy's literary debut in 1852 and the late 1880's, when he first became known in America, Tolstoy's philosophical evolution took him through a welter of often contradictory beliefs. Taken as a stadial development, his works form a logical progression toward an ideal, but if they are to be viewed all at once, then their overall design is obscured. In nineteenth-century Russia the observant reader was able to plot the course by which Tolstoy's tireless mind moved successively from one idea to another. Thus the perceptive critic Mikhailovsky was able to predict with some accuracy the future direc­ tion of Tolstoy's literary efforts after reading Part Seven of Anna Karenina, wherein is described the shattering revelation that transformed Tolstoy's life and work. The author of The Cossacks and War and Peace came to be disowned by the man who wrote Confession and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. The American readership, however, received the young Tolstoy with the old. Whereas in 1885 only a single translation of The Cossacks was available to the American reader, by 1890 there were 34 titles in print, and a twenty-volume set of Tolstoy's collected works would soon appear.1 By reading only two of these works one might en­ counter both a defender of Orthodoxy and an apostate, an aristocrat and a muzhik, a pacifist and a militant nationalist, an advocate of family happiness and a preacher of celibacy and sexual continence, an objective observer of human behavior and an apostle.

This idealized portrayal of Russian peasants and soldiers is essential to Tolstoy’s construction of a Russian national myth that unites members of all social classes behind a shared set of values. However, in turning the Russian peasantry into idealized, oversimplified caricatures that lack individuality, complexity, agency, and the ability for critical thought, Tolstoy reduces these characters to mere instruments that provide morally edifying lessons to Russia’s elites. This imposition of an essentializing and instrumentalizing narrative on the peasant class, weakens Tolstoy’s national myth and mirrors the orientalist depiction of Russia perpetuated by the West.
