The present treatment constitutes an updated revision for the monocotyledon and gymnosperm flora (excluding Orchidaceae and Poaceae) for the biogeographical region of Puerto Rico (including all islets and islands) and the Virgin Islands. With this contribution, we fill the last major gap in the flora of this region, since the dicotyledons have been previously revised. This volume recognizes 33 families, 118 genera, and 349 species of Monocots (excluding the Orchidaceae and Poaceae) and three families, three genera, and six species of gymnosperms. The Poaceae with an estimated 89 genera and 265 species, will be published in a separate volume at a later date. When Ackerman’s (1995) treatment of orchids (65 genera and 145 species) and the Poaceae are added to our account of monocots, the new total rises to 35 families, 272 genera and 759 species. The differences in number from Britton’s and Wilson’s (1926) treatment is attributed to changes in families, generic and species concepts, recent introductions, naturalization of introduced species and cultivars, exclusion of cultivated plants, misdeterminations, and discoveries of new taxa or new distributional records during the last seven decades. -

Suppressor Capacity of Copper Nanoparticles Biosynthesized Using Crocus Sativus L. Leaf Aqueous Extract on Methadone-Induced

Leaf aqueous extract) for determining its potential against methadone-induced cell death in PC12. The results of chemical characterization tests i.e., FE-SEM, FT-IR, XRD, EDX, TEM, and UV–Vis spectroscopy revealed that the study showed that copper nanoparticles were synthesized in the perfect way possible. In the TEM and FE-SEM images, the copper nanoparticles were in the mean size of 27.5 nm with the spherical shape. In the biological part of the present research, the Rat infammatory cytokine assay kit was used to measure the concentrations of infammatory cytokines. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) test was used to show DNA fragmentation and apoptosis. Caspase-3 activity was assessed by the caspase activity colorimetric assay kit and mitochondrial membrane potential was studied by Rhodamine123 fuorescence dye. Also, the cell viability of PC12 was measured by trypan blue assay. Copper nanoparticles-treated cell cutlers signifcantly (p ≤ 0.01) decreased the infammatory cytokines concentrations, caspase-3 activity, and DNA fragmentation and they raised the cell viability and mitochondrial membrane potential in the high concentration of methadone- treated PC12 cells. The best result of neuroprotective properties was seen in the high dose of copper nanoparticles i.e., 4 µg. -

The genus Eleutherine Herb. is a member of the new world tribe Tigridieae of Iridaceae and comprises low-growing bulbous plants with pleated lanceolate leaves and small white, evening-blooming flowers (Goldblatta & Snow 1991), and comprises four species. Eleutherine angusta Ravenna native range is Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil) to Paraguay of South America. E. bulbosa (Mill.) Sistemática Vegetal • Instituto de Biociências • Universidade de São Paulo • Brazil • [email protected] Social media are part of the daily life in the modern society: we follow the news on Twitter, share funny gifs on Tumblr, post selfies on Facebook, spread scientific papers on ResearchGate, and share experiences and trade plants in the discussion forums. Among all possible connections achieved by the social media, one that has always captivated me is the bridge they created to connect professional biologists to “citizen scientists”. From the age of the forums to Facebook, I’ve been fol- lowing with keen interest posts with photos of carnivorous plants in their natural habitats in Brazil and abroad, and many new regional records were found that way, and even species discoveries and re-discoveries. The long-lost Drosera ascendens A.St.-Hil. was rediscovered thanks to social media, as it was the discovery of the peculiar D. chimaera Gonella & Rivadavia. Both findings were made possible thanks to photos posted by the carnivorous plant enthusiast Adilson Peres in the Brazilian carnivo- rous plant forum back in 2010. His photos and the information he provided on the location of his encounters enabled us to collect and study these plants, and finally solve the taxonomy of the group (see Gonella et al. 2014). ABSTRACT Background. This paper is a comment on the idea of matrix-free Cladistics. Demon- stration of this idea's efficiency is a major goal of the study. Within the proposed framework, the ordinary (phenetic) matrix is necessary only as ``source'' of Hennigian trees, not as a primary subject of the analysis. Switching from the matrix-based thinking to the matrix-free Cladistic approach clearly reveals that optimizations of the character-state changes are related not to the real processes, but to the form of the data representation. Methods. We focused our study on the binary data. We wrote the simple ruby-based script FORESTER version 1.0 that helps represent a binary matrix as an array of the rooted trees (as a ``Hennigian forest''). The binary representations of the genomic (DNA) data have been made by script 1001. The Average Consensus method as well as the standard Maximum Parsimony (MP) approach has been used to analyze the data. Principle findings. The binary matrix may be easily re-written as a set of rooted trees (maximal relationships). The latter might be analyzed by the Average Consensus method. Paradoxically, this method, if applied to the Hennigian forests, in principle can help to identify clades despite the absence of the direct evidence from the primary data.
