Up until now, there is still limited knowledge on the accuracy of the version 7 research product TRMM 3B42-V7 despite having the advantage of a high temporal resolution and large spatial coverage over oceans and land. This is particularly the case in tropical regions in Asia. The objective of this study is therefore to analyze the performance of rainfall estimation from TRMM 3B42-V7 (henceforth TRMM) using rain gauge data in Malaysia, specifically from the Pahang river basin as a case study, and using a set of performance indicators/scores. The results suggest that the altitude of the region affects the performances of the scores. Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) is lower mostly at a higher altitude and mid-altitude. The correlation coefficient (CC) generally shows a positive but weak relationship between the rain gauge measurements and TRMM (0 < CC < 0.4), while the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) scores are low (NSE < 0.1).

  • Development of Rainfall Erosivity Isohyet Map for Peninsular Malaysia
Rivers 2011 6th – 9th December 2011, Penang, Malaysia Development of rainfall erosivity isohyet map for Peninsular Malaysia CHENG SIANG LEOW, Research Officer, River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC), Universiti Sains Malaysia, Engineering Campus, Seri Ampangan, 14300 Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia. Email: [email protected] Abstract This article describes the development of a rainfall erosivity map for Peninsular Malaysia. Prior to the release of a national level isohyets map for rainfall erosivity (R) factor, soil loss estimation using Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or its revised version (RUSLE) requires manual computation of R factor from the users. This practice induces uncertainties and discrepancies in soil loss estimations due to the use of different computation procedures and spatial approximation methods. This manuscript documents a standardized computation of R values using 10-year rainfall records from 241 rain gauges in the peninsula. The processes of data preparation, analysis and mapping are described herein. The developed isohyets map provides valuable R factor data for easy application of USLE-based soil loss models in Malaysia. Key words: Rainfall erosivity; universal soil loss equation; spatial approximation; isohyets map; GIS. 1. Introduction K - Soil erodibility factor, the erosion rate for a specific soil in continuous fallow The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or its revised condition on a 9% slope of 22.1m version, RUSLE, is the single most commonly used length.

  • Social Science Research and Conservation Management in the Interior of Borneo Unravelling Past and Present Interactions of People and Forests
SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH AND CONSER The Culture & Conservation Research Program in Kayan Mentarang National Park, East Kalimantan, constituted a unique interdisciplinary engagement in central Borneo that lasted for six years (1991-97). Based on original ethnographic, ecological, and historical data, this volume comprehensively describes the people and the environment of this region and makes MANAGEMENT VATION IN THE INTERIOR OF BORNEO a rare contribution to the understanding of past and present interactions between people and forests in central Borneo. Kayan Mentarang has thus become one of the ethnographically best known protected areas in Southeast Asia. By pointing at the interface between research and forest management, this book offers tools for easing the antagonism between applied and scholarly research, and building much needed connections across fields of knowledge. The daily rainfall data were obtained from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) for the periods of 1965 to 2015. The missing values throughout the 51 years period were estimated using the various types of weighting methods. In determining the best imputation method, three test for evaluating model performance has been used. The findings of this study indicate that the proposed method is more efficient than the traditional method. The homogeneity of the data series was checked using the homogeneity tests recommended by the existing literatures. The results indicated that more than 40% of the rainfall stations were homogenous based on the proposed method. !31 Gini Gorlinski Abandonment vs. Adaptation: Religiosity and the Sustainability of Kenyah Traditional Vocal Performance in Central Borneo1 Gini Gorlinski, Independent scholar, Chicago, Illinois, United States of America [email protected] © 2017 University of Malaya. All rights reserved. Malaysian Journal of Performing and Visual Arts, Volume 3, 2017 Abstract Religiosity, as distinct from religion, can be understood as a particular sense of the contours of the spirit world and of the human relationship with that domain. In communities that have undergone religious conversion, the way in which religiosity is reconciled with the new faith holds great significance for the sustainability of traditional music. This essay examines religiosity as it relates to the choice of the Kenyah of Sarawak, Malaysia, to abandon one type of traditional vocal performance and adapt another following the community’s late 20th-century conversion to Christianity. Ultimately, the study underscores the role of social, spiritual, and linguistic contexts and constructs (attitudes) in sustaining traditional music in such post-conversion environments. Keywords: Kenyah, vocal music, religion, religiosity, conversion, sustainability Preface: Rationale for Retiring a Tradition Prior to the mid-1950s, the sound of gongs was an integral and pervasive component of major ritual events among the Kenyah Uma’ Jalan of what is now North Kalimantan, Indonesia. By the late 20th century, however, the community had fully adopted Christianity and gongs had all but disappeared from ritual life. Why were the instruments silenced? Why couldn’t gong playing simply be adapted or recontextualized to mark Christian ritual activities—notably, Christmas and Easter—as well as the New Year, weddings, funerals, and other ceremonial events? When confronted with such questions, a respected grandfather in the village of Long Ampung succinctly responded that gongs were adet.
