Women in Spanish politics of change: study of roles and representations. Master thesis in Journalism and Media Analysis, Univerisity of Vytautas Magnus, Kaunas, 2016. Key words: politics of change, Spain, feminization of politics, women representation Times after economic crisis started in 2008 were tough for Spain. People started to face negative effects of crisis in their new everyday life marked by high rates of unemployment, decreasing economy and increasing taxes, cuts on education and health care, corruption in business and politics. Massive protests and strikes occupied streets of Spain because citizens were unsatisfied with current situation. Back then 15-M Movement seemed as one of thousands other demonstrations around Spain but it actually was so significant that today scientists call it a part of country’s revolution. On 15th of May, 2011, around 8 million Spaniards went to the streets to show their rejection of politics and politicians that doesn’t represent them anymore. Not only 15-M Movement made politicians from traditional parties to rethink their decisions but also it gave a possibility for new political parties to arise. In general, a new phase of Spanish socio-political life has started that in this work is discussed as politics of change. This thesis offers to look into these recent political changes in Spain through women’s experiences and participations. Even though the idea of politics feminization in Spain came together with new leaders and the symbols of political changes – Ada Colau and Manuela Carmena – it was noticed that women in politics of change are less seen in the public and less represented in the media on daily bases. Their input into the politics of change stays unknown. Media occupies an important role here because it is main source to voice women participation in the political changes in Spain. Therefore, this study aims to disclose women representations and their roles in contemporary politics in Spain. In order to achieve the aim, these questions will be answered: what are the main features of politics of change? What relation do women have with politics of change in Spain? How media creates representations of women who brought ideas of political change? What women themselves see as their roles in political changes? After analysing the theoretical approaches about politics of change, feminization of politics and media representations, two qualitative methods (semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis) were chosen in order to understand women representations and their roles in Spanish politics of change. The result of the analysis showed that women in politics receive triple critique: for being women and reaching for the highest positions, for not being a part of traditional parties and for changes and doing politics in different way in Spain. However, in politics of change media creates female representations based on their actions and ideologies and factors like their appearances or family life are slightly left for the second plan. Women, activists and politicians, see 5 their role in politics of change as direct and indirect change of the institutions in order to make them more open to people; they want to show that politics can be done in a different and more democratic way. 6 SANTRAUKA Vigilija Žiūraitė. By training the very best leaders, developing powerful new ideas, and disseminating innovative solutions and institutional reforms, the Ash Center’s goal is to meet the profound challenges facing the world’s citizens. Our Occasional Papers Series highlights new research and commentary that we hope will engage our readers and prompt an energetic exchange of ideas in the public policy community. This paper is contributed by Quinton Mayne, Ford Foundation Associate Profes- sor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School and an Ash Center faculty associate, and Cecilia Nicolini, a former Ash Center Research Fellow and a current advisor to the president of Argentina. The paper addresses issues that lie at the heart of the work of the Ash Center—urban governance, democratic deepening, participatory innova- tions, and civic technology. It does this through a study of the fascinating rise of Ahora Madrid, a progressive electoral alliance that—to the surprise of onlookers—managed to gain political control, just a few months after being formed, of the Spanish capital following the 2015 municipal elections. Headed by the unassuming figure of Manuela Carmena, a former judge, Ahora Madrid won voters over with a bold agenda that reimagined the relationship between citizens and city hall.

Whereas the literature on safety of journalists mainly discusses threats as part of armed conflicts, this article studies how other kinds of conflicts such as economic strangulation and the viability threat represent threats against journalists’ work and safety. It argues that acts of intimidation directed against journalists represent an attack on democracy itself as they have the effect of limiting the freedom of expression. The aim of this study is to explore how journalists operate in such a conflict and under such uncertainty, as an implication of (political) pressure caused by the politics of Memoranda in Greece, Cyprus, and Spain. The comparative analysis focuses on possible changes in the processes of message construction and in the journalistic practices of the participants, exploring if, how, and to what extent these changes were imposed to journalists directly or indirectly. Keywords European South; journalists; memorandum; safety; self-censorship; silence Issue This article is part of the issue “Rethinking Safety of Journalists” edited by Kristin Skare Orgeret (Oslo Metropolitan Univer- sity, Norway) and William Tayeebwa (University of Makerere, Uganda).

The paper is a critical reflection analyzing the major complications, called “tsunamis”, the city of Barcelona has faced in recent years: political instability, terrorism and tourismophobia. The paper aims at 1) retracing the causes and motivations but also community reactions and sociocultural consequences to the three tsunamis, and 2) trying to learn lessons from the Barcelonan case study proposing solutions to the tourismophobia phenomenon. The results stem from an ethnographic fieldwork undertaken during the IPAC Summer School in 2018, whose aim was to understand the paradox of international tourism, at once bringing economic benefits but creating sociocultural disequilibria. The analysis considers written sources and the participant observation during the ethnographic fieldworks in Barcelona.
