My attempt is to analyse the spoken language of the main characters. I chose a sitcom because accordingtomyopinionthis particular sitcom contains a veryrich source of expressions and utterances suitable for observing the contemporary spoken American English. The episodes that I selected provide us with different registers of spoken English that the main characters use (e.g.Debra,Marie –tendtouse neutral language,Raymond, Robert – speak with more colloquial, neutral language, Frank – uses colloquial language,swear-words).SpokenEnglishbynonnative speakers (Italians) will be observedas well.Their speechis comprehensible but not alwayscorrectandtheyspeakwithanItalianaccent. The choice of the material was partly influenced by my personal experience.I livedinthe UnitedStates for sevenyears andI cansee how the language from the media can influence spoken language. This particular sitcom has become very popular in the United States because the actors performedtheir roles inanoutstandingway.Another point is that the sitcom is full of real life andhumorous situations. The language is simple yet very powerful inthe right moment at the right place.Myattempt is totransfer the same or verysimilar effect of the language into Czechas was masteredby theauthorsinEnglish.I employedmybesteffortstoachieve suchaneffect. The analysis of the translation comprises approaches from various points of view (e.g.lexical,stylistic,grammatical andtextual equivalence).I would like to prove the theory that Czech language provides a very rich source of expressions on stylistic level comparedtoEnglishthat lacks such stylictic variety. Czech language enables translators to play with the language and create new words and collocations in many layers (neutral, colloquial, expressive, general Czech, general Czech colloquial, vulgar, slangandothers) whereas English distinguishesonlyneutral, informal, slang andlocaldialect layers. The translationandanalysis was a challenge andanopportunity to achieve the best possibleresultswitha professionalsupervision. 5 1 Situation comedy A situation comedy, usually referred to as a sitcom , is a genre of comedy programmes which originated on the radio. Today, sitcoms are found almost exclusively on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. Sitcoms are usually based on recurring characters in an ordinary environmentsuchashomeorworkplace. The first sitcoms were broadcast onradioon12 th January,1926.The title of the show was Sam 'n' Henry onWGN inChicagoand it became very successful in this period. Fibber McGee and Molly was one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, airing onradiofrom 1935to1959.Probably the most well-knownandsuccessful earlytelevisionsitcom was I Love Lucy starring the real-life couple of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, which was groundbreakingfor manyreasons including the shooting of episodes onfilm therebyinventingreruns.1 The story for one episode in most American sitcoms is written to run for twentytwo minutes, eight minutes are left for a TV commercial. Sitcoms thatare producedoutsidetheUS mayhavealittle bitlongerrunningtime. The usual season for American sitcoms (as well as other American television series) includes twenty or more episodes. British sitcoms are traditionally made in series of six episodes. American sitcoms are often writtenby large teams of script writers duringroundtable sessions, while most British sitcoms are written exclusively by one or two authors. The usuallengthofoneepisodeisthirtyminutesandtheyareairedweekly. In the 1960s a considerable development of the film art led to the creationof special effects, features andediting. Most of the sitcoms are not filmed in the presence of live audiences, therefore there is a significant featureofa recordedlaughtrack. Inthe 1970s a Koreanwar sitcom MASH airedfor the first time onCBS and became aninstant hit.The use of raw humour was successful inshows as for example MarriedwithChildren. 1 Wikipedia the free encyclopaedia (online), 2001. (retrieved 16 March 2008) Available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitcom 6 In the 1980s Bill Cosby in The Cosby Show or Roseanne Barr in Roseanne introduced popular sitcoms based on self-starring characters. Later on Jerry Seinfeldon Seinfeld andRayRomanomadethis transitionofeponymous sitcom. The typical sitcom situation is usually that of a family, workplace or a group of friends. In the mid1990s several sitcoms have gained vast popularity. The sitcom Friends built their characters onthe storyarcs andbecame the most popular American sitcom. Other earlier popular sitcoms with story arcs are Frasier ,The FreshPrince of Bel-Air , Roseanne , Moesha , Boy Meets Worldand Seinfeld. The Simpsons is another verysuccessful sitcom, whichhas become the longest runningprogram of its kindinthe United States (it was first broadcast in 1989andnew episodes are still inproductionas of 2008).The show is unusual in that itisanimated. These sitcoms includingEverybody Loves Raymond carrytypical features for a soap opera such as regular endof-seasoncliffhanger and gradually developingrelationships ofthecharactersduringthecourseofseries. 2 1.1 Everybody loves Raymond This sitcom was broadcast onCBS from September 13,1996toMay16, 2005 andbelongs among the most popular American sitcoms. Ray's parents Frank and Marie Barone live across the street andthat is whythey are frequent andunexpectedvisitors toRay's house.Debra is oftencriticizedbyMarie andRayfinds himself inthe middle of the twowomen.Marie's indirect critical comments of Debra as a poor housewife are veryfrustratingtoher.Raymond's older brother Robert is divorced andlives withhis parents.Raymondis a preferredson, whichbothers Robert. This is often a source of their never-endingarguments.Robert is ofteninsecure about himself andabout his relationships withwomen.Despite of all problems, the brothers are devoted to each other very much. Robert works as a police officer and thus is highyadmiredbyRaymondforhavingsuchademandingjob. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. MAURER, B.A., B.A. DENTON, TEXAS DECEMBER 2013 DEDICATION This work is dedicated to Janet and Joe Maurer, who gave me a safe place to grow up; the ability to empathize with others and think critically about everything I experience; an imagination big enough to envision a more just world; and above all, who allowed me to “govern myself accordingly” into a life that is truly my own. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to preface this thesis by acknowledging a few of the people who directly or indirectly influenced its completion. I would first like to thank Dr. Christa Downer for introducing me to motherhood studies. I would like to thank Dr. Claire Sahlin and Dr. Agatha Beins for the thoughtful feedback and continuous encouragement that helped me develop into a better writer, more thorough researcher, and more confident thinker. When I moved to Texas in 2009, sight unseen, to attend Texas Woman‟s University, I had no idea what a challenging and rewarding journey it would be, and I am so grateful for the opportunities, experiences, and individuals that have enriched my life along the way. I am so proud to be part of TWU‟s pioneering past, present, and future. I would also like to thank my friends and family for every draft read, every idea volley returned, and every floor mopped in support of my work.

I responded quite honestly: “High School Nettie wouldn’t have been surprised. She knew where we were heading.” She absolutely did. I have always been pretty sure I would end up with an advanced degree and I have always known what that would involve. The only question was one of how I was going to get here, but my favorite thing has always been watching television and movies. Once I learned that a job existed where I could watch television and, more or less, get paid for it, I threw myself wholeheartedly into pursuing that job. I get to watch television and talk to other people about it. That’s simply heaven for me. A lot of people helped me get here.
