In the first image we see, Myrtle Gordon (Gena Rowlands) has just exited stage left into the wings during a performance of the play The Second Woman. In this play, Myrtle acts the starring role of Virginia, a woman in her early sixties who is trapped in a stagnant second marriage to a photographer. Both Myrtle and Virginia are grappling with age and attempting to come to terms with the choices they have made throughout their lives.

Built 1924-25; architects, Crane & Franzheim. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1024, Lot 7. On June 14 and 15, 1982, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the ANTA Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 5). The hearing was continued to October 19, 1982. Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Eighty-three witnesses spoke in favor of designation. Two witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The owner, with his representatives, appeared at the hearing, and indicated that he had not formulated an opinion regarding designation. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The ANTA Theater survives today as one of the historic theaters that symbolize American theater for both New York and the nation. Built in the 1924-25, the ANTA was constructed for the Theater Guild as a subscription playhouse, named the Guild Theater. The fourrling Guild members, including actors, playwrights, designers, attorneys and bankers, formed the Theater Guild to present high quality plays which they believed would be artistically superior to the current offerings of the commercial Broadway houses. More than just an auditorium, however, the Guild Theater was designed to be a theater resource center, with classrooms, studios, and a library. The theater also included the rrost up-to-date staging technology.

In 1925, eight actors were dedicated to a dream. Expatriated from their Broadway haunts by constant film commitments, they wanted to form a club here in Hollywood; a private place of rendezvous, where they could fraternize at any time. Their first organizational powwow was held at the home of Robert Edeson on April 19th. ”This shall be a theatrical club of love, loy- alty, and laughter!” finalized Edeson. • Gena on John and Gena.Pdf
GENA ON JOHN AND GENA LA Weekly - December 5, 1980 “Tell me what you want me to be. I can be that. I can be anything.” Gena Rowland’s ‘Mabel’ to Peter Falk’s ‘Nick,’ A Woman Under the Influence It should be comparatively easy to convey in words the presence of someone as well known as Gena Rowlands, but in fact it’s not. Sitting with her at a restaurant, or standing speaking with her at an after-dinner party, the impression is… quietly kaleidoscopic. The phrase is awkward but accurate. The clothes are Gloria -- the dress, the shows, even the ring (which Cassavetes gave her with the first profits from A Woman Under the Influence ). The sense of assurance is Gloria’s, too. When she reaches into her handbag for a cigarette lighter, the gesture is Gloria -- the savvy, streetwise, can’t-be-pushed- around gun moll -- reaching for her gun, and I literally flinched just the a little, the first time she did it. Some of us, after all, take our fantasies very seriously. But there is certainly nothing tough in Gena. Resilient, yes. On the contrary, I’ve rarely met anyone as gentle. She speaks with the sincerity and directness of Mabel, the vulnerable, intense housewife in A Woman Under the Influence -- and often with Mabel’s hesitancy, as though testing what she’s about to say with the tip of her tongue. But she turns to include someone else in the conversation, and without a noticeable flicker of gears there is the famous, high-tuned, consummate actress of Opening Night, being quietly and skillfully gracious, and accepting the praise that is certainly her due.

  • John Cassavetes and the Making of Love Streams by Michael Ventura Kamera Books, 2007
from CASSAVETES DIRECTS – John Cassavetes and the Making of Love Streams by Michael Ventura Kamera Books, 2007 THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1983 - Trying to get it It’s after 10 at night, the phone rings, I pick up, and the caller announces, “Michael! This is John!” Then he launches into a monologue I can barely follow, while I’m trying to figure who “John” might be. I don’t know any Johns very well. It takes a few moments to realize that this is Cassavetes speaking. Surprised -- no, stunned -- I wish I’d listened harder to his initial barrage of sentences. The man is very enthusiastic about something. I’m trying to get my bearings while he’s praising me for an interview we’d done six months before, the last time we‘d spoken. During the interview he’d stopped suddenly and said, “This isn’t going well,” and I said, “Trust me, I see your words as printed sentences as you’re saying them, and this is going very well.” Now it seems he agrees, and that I know my business is something he respects. Of course this pleases me very much, but still his rap tonight doesn’t compute -- my impression of the man is that it’s not like him to make conversation, and, at the moment, that’s what he’s doing. The thought occurs: maybe he’s drunk. In his circles, as in mine, people often are. Now he’s saying that he’s gotten a deal to direct Love Streams. Do I remember the play? Yes, but more vaguely than I admit.
