JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL by LEE CAPLAN A Thesis submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History and Research written under the direction of Dr. Henry Martin and approved by ___________________________________ ___________________________________ Newark, New Jersey May,2017 ©2017 Lee Caplan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS JAZZ EDUCATION IN ISRAEL By LEE CAPLAN Thesis Director Dr. Henry Martin Jazz Education in Israel is indebted to three key figures – Zvi Keren, Arnie Lawrence, and Mel Keller. This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

  • Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality
Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music. The methodology to accomplish an organized collection of musical material was to divide them in five major influences, part of them by composers and part by genres notable by having evolved through absorbing elements from distinct cultural sources. In five projects, fifteen original compositions are provided along with their recorded and/or filmed performances and commentaries about the compositional aspects, concerningthe style or composer focused on.

44 DOWNBEAT MARCH 2019 INDIE LIFE MOONJUNE RECORDS Fruitful Friendships t 6-foot-4-inches and 250 pounds, Leonardo Pavkovic is a larger-than-life figure in the record business. But his Aphysical stature is exceeded by his sheer passion for music. “I am an unusual label,” said the gregarious head of MoonJune Records. “I do not sign art- COURTESY OF THE ARTIST ists. There is no such thing as a musician send- ing me a demo and me taking the demo into consideration. The whole label is built on my per- sonal friendship with musicians. When I started this label, I didn’t have distribution, I didn’t have money, I didn’t have a lawyer or publishing. I just said, ‘OK, let’s see how I can help my friends.’” The label’s inaugural release in 2001 was sax- ophonist Elton Dean and guitarist Mark Hewins’ collaboration, Bar Torque. And today, Pavkovic is closing in on the 100-release mark for his label, while his MoonJune Music agency has handled booking of about 2,000 shows in more than 50 countries. Indonesia has become a particularly fertile scene to tap into for Pavkovic, yielding dis- coveries like guitarist Tohpati Ario Hutomo and keyboardist Dwiki Dharmawan. “I find Indonesia to be a very interesting place,” he said. “Jakarta is a major city, like the London of Indonesia. Almost 20 million people live there from all around Indonesia and every- body knows everybody. It was very easy to make connections there, so I started booking bands and being involved with the festivals.

Nick Didkovsky 118 E 93rd St, Apt 9C, NY NY 10128 (212) 369-1733 [email protected] www.doctornerve.org www.myspace.com/doctornerve www.myspace.com/bonepowertrio With a musical career spanning 25 years, Doctor Nerve founder and leader Nick Didkovsky is a world-renowned guitarist, band leader, composer, and music software programmer. In 1983, he founded the avant-rock band Doctor Nerve which to date has released 8 albums of over 50 of his compositions on the progressive rock label Cuneiform Records and his own Punos Music label. Doctor Nerve joins the furious energy of rock with intricate composition, annihilating the boundaries between heavy metal, contemporary music, and improvisation. Doctor Nerve channels the gut wrenching intensity of hard rock and heavy metal into a head-on collision with the compositional sensibilities of Bartok and Cage, with blistering and idiosyncratic guitar work leading the charge. Bone is Nick’s hard-rocking all-star trio with Hugh Hopper (Canterbury fuzz-bass legend for Soft Machine & Isotope), and John Roulat (Forever Einstein). Inspired by the energy and iconoclasm of heavy metal, evoking the fervor of guitar gods past, Bone’s music is cathartic, blistering, and smart. Bone has performed at various festivals and venues including Whitney Museum of American Art. Nick is also a member of the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, a radical electric guitar ensemble which redefined the shape and sound of electric guitar music, composition, and improvisation. Didkovsky contributed twelve compositions to the quartet, which has enjoyed many European tours and festival appearances since 1989. As a composer, Nick has composed music for Bang On A Can All-Stars, Meridian Arts Ensemble, Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, California EAR Unit, New Century Players, Ethel String Quartet, Electric Kompany, ARTE Quartett, and other ensembles.
