Order Sons of Italy - Garibaldi Lodge President Tom De Nardi

Honoured guests, ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge and The Canadian Italian Business and Professionals Association (CIBPA), I would like to sincerely thank you for attending this year’s 32nd Annual Gala in support of the “Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation and The Chronic Disease Innovation Centre”. For the past 31 years the Garibaldi Lodge along with its sisters, La Lupa di Roma, have been funding and promoting Italian culture and language throughout . Our members not only support the rich Italian Community but greater Manitoba; medical research, hospitals, education, inner-city poverty, food banks and immigrants are just some of the areas our organization has made a difference. In the past year alone, our dynamic organization has been able to contribute over $200,000 to several deserving and needy causes; Holy Rosary Parish and its inner-city “Outreach Project”, funding of specialized equipment for the Health Sciences Centre, as well as, multiple “Oak Table” lunches feeding the homeless and our annual Sons of Italy ‘Christmas Eve Feast’ for new immigrants. Each year CIBPA takes great pride in recognizing the entrepreneurial or professional accomplishments of one deserving individual. This year we are honoured to add Dr. Rayleen De Luca, C.M., O.M., professor and former department head of Clinical Psychology at the University of Manitoba, to that list. “Congratulations, Dr. De Luca!” In closing, I would like to thank all our members who have entrusted me with the President’s office, a duty I could not hope to fulfill without the hard work and commitment of our board. Grazie, Tom De Nardi, President Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge CIBPA,

La Lupa Di Roma President Luisa Macchia

On behalf of my Sisters of the Order Sons of Italy, La Lupa Di Roma Lodge, I would like to congratulate the exceptional men of the Garibaldi Lodge on another successful Annual Gala. Congratulazioni! The continued hard work of these dedicated men has had a profound impact on our Italian and Manitoba community at large. Bravo, Brothers. La Lupa di Roma Lodge is a sisterhood of women that enthusiastically plan events and raise funds to donate to worthy charitable organizations in Manitoba. Passionate about giving back to our community, over the years we have donated funds and provided service to worthwhile causes, such as Rossbrook House, MADD, Jocelyn House, Variety Children’s Charity, Holy Rosary Church, Koats for Kids, and the House of Peace to name just a few. For nearly fifteen years we have organized an International Women’s Day celebration. At this luncheon, a Donna Dell’ Anno / woman of the year, who has made a profound difference in our community is awarded recognition and her charity of choice is financially supported. Our big event this year will be a fashion show fundraiser to assist the Mood Disorders Association. This self-help organization is dedicated to providing support, education and advocacy for those living with mental health challenges. Join us for this festive and important evening on May 4, 2018. La Lupa di Roma women not only provide assistance to those in need, we also have fun in the process. We have enjoyed evenings of bingo bowling, paint nights, cupcake and cookie decorating, bud spud and steak events, getaways and girls’ night out at the spa and more. We encourage like-minded females who share our passion to join us in our efforts and fun. Our Lodge works hand in hand with our Brothers in many charitable activities and events which bring our community closer together. We proudly stand beside them today and applaud their tremendous efforts. Again this year, we wish all those attending another gala full of great company, delicious food and enjoyment, alla italiana! Buon divertimento! Luisa Macchia President La Lupa di Roma Lodge

Order Sons of Italy of canada National President Joseph S. Monachino

On behalf of the National Council of the Order Sons of Italy of Canada, our filial lodge Presidents and members across this great country of Canada, I’m honoured to bring “accorato messaggi di saluti”. Our moto is Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Today we stress our “Fraternity” as being a service organization not only assisting those in need in the Italian- Canadian Community but also the Canadian community at large. It is our goal to be of service to those that are in need in our communities. The Garibaldi Lodge, along with the Lupa di Roma Lodge in Winnipeg continue to be leading examples of what our Order represents and being one of the largest benevolent Lodges. The charity committee must certainly have its challenges selecting a charity to support with so many worthy deserving causes. This year’s choice, the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation and the Chronic Disease Innovation Centre is a befitting choice. Going beyond traditional caregiving, it focuses on the prevention and management of chronic diseases through its unique medically integrated model of health and wellness. I’m also honoured to congratulate Dr. Rayleen V. De Luca, C.Psych., C.M., O.M. on being selected as the 2018 CIBPA, Professional of the Year. Dr. De Luca, your list of accomplishments are remarkable as indicated by your recognitions and awards from your peers. To President Tom, your dedicated Executive, Gala Co-Chairs and hardworking committee, congratulations on a successful event which makes the Order Sons of Italy of Canada proud of your generous contributions to the Winnipeg, Manitoba community. National Federation of CIBPA National President Robert sacco

It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the annual Sons of Italy/ Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association (CIBPA) Gala. The National Federation was launched on July 1, 1989 and has 11 registered chapters throughout Canada, our newest one is in Calgary. We are very proud to report that our CIBPA Chapters have helped to fundraise and distribute over $10 million to various Canadian community based charities and education programs. The majority of our donations were made to hospitals, seniors’ residents and students that receive government assistance, with almost half of the funds distributed to more than 3,000 students. The CIBPA and other Italian Canadian organizations created “The Italy Earthquake Relief Fund” (TIERF) to help the people affected by the massive earthquake in central Italy on Aug. 24, 2016. To date TIERF has raised over $1.6 million On December 22, 2017 TIERF completed the donation of 2 “Tele Mobile Hospitals” to Science For Life (SFL) an Italian Charity at a cost of 375,000 Euros each ($1.3 million donation). When these technology enabled “mobile hospitals” are not assisting in natural disasters, they will be used as hospitals in small towns that lack medical facilities. SFL is in the process of sending these mobile hospitals to the cities most affected by the earthquake. Over the past 31 years the Sons of Italy and later the CIBPA has worked to build a vibrant community of business professionals, supporting Winnipeg’s economic growth and development. We have gathered together and have an opportunity to reflect on the association’s many accomplishments, while celebrating the many contributions made by Italian Canadians. This year’s charity of choice is the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation to help continue its good works for future generation. This is another great example of our commitment to the community and to Canada. It is fitting that tonight we also honour Dr. Rayleen De Luca for the 2018 CIBPA Professional of the Year Award for her professionalism, leadership and commitment to her profession. On behalf of the National Federation CIBPA, I wish you all a wonderful anniversary celebration, as well as continued success. Robert Sacco President National Federation CIBPA

Vice Consul of Italy in winnipeg Stanislao Carbone

Over the years I have had the pleasure of offering greetings and congratulations to the Sons of Italy. The organization never ceases to impress me for its commitment to supporting a range of community services that are essential to our collective well-being. In so doing it contributes to an important dialogue, one based on positing a dynamic and creative interpretation of what it means to be an Italian Canadian. The Sons of Italy is truly dedicated to espousing a message of unity and harmony while extolling the virtues of ethnic diversity. It is a message that carries greater resonance in this day and age where certain sectors of political and civil society are bent on casting an ominous shadow predicated on destructive values such as divisiveness, exclusivity, fear and hatred. I trust the organization will go forward into the future true to the principles that have made it a beacon of civic mindedness and social progress. Stanislao Carbone Vice Consul of Italy

In 1997, one of our beloved brothers, Vince Bova, passed away after a long battle with cancer. To know Vince was to know a man who exemplified the spirit of The Sons of Italy. He was committed to the club in a manner that was beyond compare.

He could always be found at social functions, volunteering his time and energy. He was a man who never asked for any credit, but was always willing to lend a hand and share a smile. In Vince's memory, we now present this annual award to a member who works diligently behind the scenes as a dedicated participant in The Sons of Italy. The past recipients have selected a deserving recipient and the award will be announced this evening.

Benvenuti a tutti!

I’m pleased to welcome all of you to the 32nd Annual Sons of Italy Gala Dinner. I have been honoured to participate on the gala committee in various roles for the last 23 of the 32 years we have been hosting. Together we have contributed over $1 million to Manitoba charities. This makes my family and I incredibly proud. It takes a great deal of effort and an incredible team to make these kinds of events a success. I would especially like to acknowledge our Honourary Chairs, Justin Bova and John Garcea, who played an integral role in tonight’s evening. Thank you, gentlemen, for your guidance and your support. Thank you also to our President, Tom De Nardi for his leadership and to my fellow Dinner Co-Chair Mario Posillipo, who was a class act and a pleasure to work with. I have every confidence this event is in excellent hands next year. Finally, it is important to mention that the brotherhood and values among the Sons of Italy is one that we all try to instill in all our sons. It gives us a sense of pride to continue this tradition.

I’m honoured that my son Gianfranco will be joining us as a member later this year. I hope that you enjoy the evening. Grazie Mille,

Tonight we continue our organization’s tradition of partnering with broadbased charities that benefit not only those of Italian descent, but all Manitobans. It indeed is remarkable that the vast majority of funds generated from this gala, recently surpassing the $1M mark, have been donated to the greater community. It speaks to the inclusiveness of our club, our pride in being Canadian, and the exemplary citizenship of our members. Alongside my good friends Mr. John Garcea and Dr. Kevin Saunders, I am thrilled to lend my support to the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation and their chronic disease prevention initiative. I equally would like to recognize Dr. Rayleen De Luca as this year’s CIBPA Award recipient. Dr. De Luca is a renowned clinical psychologist who has devoted her life to helping others and is very deserving of this prestigious award. I would also like to acknowledge Dinner Chairs Joe Leuzzi, Mario Posillipo, and the entire dinner committee for putting on another outstanding event. Every time I think this dinner cannot possibly be of a higher quality, this group continues to innovate, build value, and exceed expectations. Finally, I would like to thank all of you, our friends in attendance this evening, whose continued support allows our organization to thrive and grow. We are cognizant of an increasingly competitive environment for your sponsorship dollars and are very appreciative of your commitment to our Organization and it’s good works. Please enjoy the authentic Italian food, five star wine, silent and live auctions, and of course the one and only Fr. Sam. Best,

Dr. Kevin Saunders

I am very pleased to serve as Honorary Co-Chair of the 2018 Sons of Italy Annual Gala Dinner. The organizing committee of the gala has graciously committed their fundraising efforts this year to The Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation. The Foundation on it’s end has committed these funds to The Chronic Disease Innovation Centre (CDIC), a research facility recently developed and centred in SOGH, whose aim is to study how we can better prevent and treat the chronic medical problems that afflict so many of us and our loved ones. The CDIC is headed up by a very bright group of young physicians and researchers. Seven Oaks General Hospital has a long history of commitment to the health of our community and city at large. We have continually strived to look beyond the traditional services provided by a community hospital. Over twenty years ago we developed the Wellness Institute, a facility designed to promote health and well-being and keep people out of hospital. It was the first of it’s kind in Canada and has gained international attention (from as far away as China who is now partnering with us to develop their own facilities modelled after ours). The CDIC will now take these aspirations even higher in a complimentary manner to The Wellness Institute, disease prevention, improved disease treatment, hospital services for those who need them. A full circle of care that has already caught the eye of other notable facilities such as The Mayo Clinic just south of us! As we all know, our health care system is undergoing some challenging times, and it is only through the commitment of groups like The Sons of Italy and your individual generosity that we can enable our brightest to stay in Winnipeg and continue their valuable contributions to the health care of our families and friends. In effect, you are validating the hard work of our research team by committing your charitable money to this cause. For this, I’d like to thank you personally.

As a lifelong resident of the north end community, community physician for the past thirty-three years, and medical director of the Wellness Institute at SOGH, I am deeply honoured to participate in this wonderful event. Thank you, Sons of Italy.

Thank you to all who attend and support. Let’s all enjoy a wonderful evening in support of this great cause.

He assists in leading his parish of Holy Cross in music ministry, and sings at various gatherings in the Italian community such as Folklorama and Viva Italia. Davide has always been deeply inspired by the Italian culture and seeks to strengthen his proficiency in the language by taking courses at the U of W next year. 2018 CIBPA Professional Award

Dr Rayleen De Luca Debt of Gratitude

Despite a lifetime of academic, professional and community achievements, Dr. Rayleen De Luca says she owes a debito di gratitudine to her father, Leno Giacomin, for insisting that she initially put aside her dream of attending university to follow the more traditional path of homemaking. To a 16-year-old girl who had just won her first scholarship, Leno’s words were upsetting, but all these years later, Rayleen says she knows her father was right and that sometimes you have to trust those who know you best. “I still thank him profusely for being so wise,” Rayleen explains. “I was young, and I had this illusion of life, but it was a dream with no goals attached.” It took another 16 years for Rayleen to step beyond her contented home life and tackle academics. With the support of her husband, Vince, and their two young sons, Troy and Trevor, Rayleen enrolled in an afternoon psychology course at the University of Winnipeg. Still unsure where this new track would take her, she worked hard, registered for more classes, got an A average, and received a gold medal. Over time, Rayleen earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Experimental Psychology and a Ph. D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manitoba. “Different stages of life have different goals,” Rayleen notes. “While I always knew I wanted to work with children, the journey from mother to university professor just fell into place as I went along.” Rayleen’s professional life has focused on helping vulnerable children, adolescents, and their families recover and thrive. As a Professor in the Clinical Psychology Graduate Program, Department of Psychology, at the University of Manitoba (she was also the faculty’s Director of Clinical Training for seven years), Rayleen helped nurture a new generation of psychologists equally as committed to assisting young Canadians. Now retired from active teaching, Rayleen is a Senior Scholar at the University of Manitoba. She is most proud of the work she and her graduate students accomplished over the years. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to teach graduate students throughout my career,” she says. “It’s also gratifying to know that the research publications we collaborated on were peer-reviewed and the treatment plans we developed were demonstrated to be effective.” One doesn’t work successfully for so long without receiving accolades for their achievements, and Rayleen is no exception. Thanks to her excellence in the field of clinical child psychology and extensive contributions to the community, Rayleen has received the Order of Canada, Order of Manitoba, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Health and Wellness, and a host of other professional and public honours. Rayleen has accomplished much in her professional life, but it is her ongoing work in the community that continues to inspire her. The list of activities she has been and is involved in is long, and for that, we should all be grateful. It is our country, our city and our shared community that owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Rayleen De Luca. by Bernard Kruchak

Order Sons of Italy of Canada

Order Sons of Italy of Canada is an organization of men and women who are devoted to the celebration of Italian heritage, community service and charitable good works. The first lodge in Canada was established in Ontario in 1915. Currently, there are fifteen Lodges in Canada and over 650 Lodges in the U.S.A. It is the largest Fraternal Order of Canadians and Americans of Italian origin.

In Manitoba, there are three Lodges: the Garibaldi men’s lodge, the Lupa Di Roma women’s lodge, and the Leonardo Da Vinci youth lodge. Together, these lodges under the Order Sons of Italy are making a difference in Manitoba.

Garibaldi Lodge The Garibaldi Lodge was the first lodge of the Order Sons of Italy of Canada to be founded in Manitoba. This year witnessed our 32nd year of annual gala fundraising dinner. Each year members celebrate giving back to the community in conjunction with the Canadian Italian Business Professional Association by donating significant funds to a charity of choice.

As a guest of our 32nd Annual Sons of Italy Gala Dinner, you might be wondering, “What does Sons of Italy do the rest of the year?” Great question!

Certainly the Gala is our major fundraiser, providing funds not only for a very large donation tonight, but it also allows us to support other groups throughout the year.

We support the community...

The Charity of Choice for our annual Gala has for many years now been a community-wide charity, benefiting all in our community. This year’s charity, the Seven Oaks General Hospital Foundation is an excellent example.

Of course, there are many other activities through the year, such as our annual Christmas Eve Feast where we provide a full dinner, pictures with Santa and presents to 400 new immigrants and those less fortunate. We also provide and serve the dinner at the Rossbrook House graduation ceremony/dinner each June. Our members and their families take part in the annual Challenge for Life walk where we have raised over $210,000 in the past six years for CancerCare Manitoba.

32 2018 Sons of Italy/CIBPA Gala Dinner www.sonsofitaly.ca We support Italian culture…

One of the guiding principles in our mission statement is to promote and preserve the Italian language, culture, and traditions. In this regard, we support the Sons of Italy Splendore D’Italia Dance Group, who teach and perform traditional Italian dances, and the Dante Alighieri Cultural Society who provide Italian language lessons for children and adults.

Through our scholarship programs we provide financial assistance to students of Italian heritage, including two $2,000 scholarships to students advancing to post-secondary institutions and a $1,750 scholarship to students advancing to a trade program. We also sponsor the annual CIBPA awards that recognize Canadians of Italian descent who have excelled in a professional or entrepreneurial capacity.

… and we have fun!

All work and no play is not the Italian way! We also have fun events for our members, including go-cart racing, winter sleigh rides and events designed to teach our younger members some of the Italian cultural traditions.

To become a member, you must be of Italian descent or married to a person of Italian descent. All such individuals of upright character, regardless of faith, are potential candidates. If you are interested, please talk to one of the members in the room (they are wearing a flower on their lapel) or visit www.sonsofitaly.ca

La Lupa Di Roma Lodge The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge was formed in 1989. Each year the Lodge hosts special fundraising events for families. The La Lupa Di Roma Lodge also holds a brunch in March of each year in recognition of International Women’s Day. At this annual event a Manitoba woman of Italian heritage is honoured for her accomplishments and involvement in the community and is presented with the “La Donna Dell’Anno” award. Like the Garibaldi Lodge, La Lupa Di Roma Lodge also offers a scholarship program for qualifying individuals who are pursuing post-secondary education. Through the years the Lodge has supported charities, seniors groups, children’s activities and individuals in need. It strives to aid the community at large in all possible ways.

Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge The Leonardo Da Vinci Youth Lodge was created in 2005 to give Italian youths in Winnipeg the opportunity to get involved in both the Italian community and other worthwhile activities in the general community. In collaboration with the Garibaldi and La Lupa Di Roma Lodges its members help various organizations through fundraising events. Its members are constantly working to achieve their goal of making Winnipeg a better place for all citizens.
