How VoIP Works? Computer Computer Internet Cable Modem VoIP Phone phone phone Phone adapter Just for Thoughts… Why Microsoft buy Skype for US$8.5 billion? Microsoft already has its own software comparable to Skype - Windows Live Messenger, which offers free instant messaging, and voice- and video-chat. Windows Live Messenger Skype Ø 330 million active users/ mth. Ø 124 million active users/ mth. Ø 40 million online users at any one moment. Ø 20-30 million online users at any one moment. Ø Free of charge. Ø About 8 million Skype users pay for the service Ø Does not offer phone services Ø Telephony infrastructure - Able to make both outbound and inbound phone calls. Possibilities of Microsoft’s Acquisition Ø User base. Microsoft hopes to sell other products to Skype's huge user base -- more than 660 million users, including more than 120 million active or "connected" users. Ø Peer to peer video. Lync has one-to-many videoconferencing, but Skype's peer-to- peer video chat adds another potentially more efficient and easier way to place video calls. Competitors- Cisco and Google. Ø Rumors of other companies' interest. Microsoft made a fairly generous offer back in April -- over the $7 billion that Skype insisted on as a starting point -- because it had heard rumors that other companies like Cisco, Google, and Facebook were interested in Skype as well. Ø Windows Phone 7 (Mobile OS) and Nokia. The software giant needs a competitive offering to Google Voice and Apple’s emerging communication platform, Facetime. Ø Microsoft is an investor in Facebook : It gets access to Skype assets and it gets to keep Skype away from Google. The Deal.. Ø eBay gets $2.55 billion for its 30% stake in Skype. Ø Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the co- founders, with their 14% stake, take home about $1.19 billion. Ø Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) own 56% of the company, and that stake is worth $4.76 billion. Ø Andreessen Horowitz had 3% of the deal and made $205 million profit on their $50 million initial investment. After the acquisition… Skype announced two new versions of its product on 17 Nov 2011: Skype 5.4 Beta for Mac and Skype 5.7 Beta for Windows. Ø Include Facebook integrations that essentially add your Facebook friends to your Skype contact list. Ø Users who connect their Facebook profiles can make video calls from within Skype to friends who will answer using Facebook. Ø Able to see Skype’s dashboard when Facebook friends are online, read their status updates and IM them Reference http://gigaom.com/2011/05/09/why-microsoft-is-buying-skype-for-8-billion/ http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/05/microsoft-buys-skype-2/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype http://www.iconfinder.com/ http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2011/05/10/skype-the-story-so-far/ http://thewallmachine.com/files/1305066668.png http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/technology-explained-how-does-skype-work/ http://mashable.com/2011/11/17/skype-facebook-2/ http://uptodatetech.com/skype-introduces-calls-to-facebook-contacts-2005 http://www.skype.com/intl/en/home Thank you! .

  • Skype Voip Service- Architecture and Comparison Hao Wang Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering University of Stuttgart Mentor: Dr.-Ing
INFOTECH Seminar Advanced Communication Services (ACS), 2005 Skype VoIP service- architecture and comparison Hao Wang Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering University of Stuttgart Mentor: Dr.-Ing. S. Rupp ABSTRACT Skype is a peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay network for VoIP and other applications, developed by KaZaa in 2003. Skype can traverse NAT and firewall more efficiently than traditional VoIP networks and it offers better voice quality. To find and locate users, Skype uses “supernodes” that are running on peer machines. In contrast, traditional systems use fixed central servers. Also Skype uses encrypted media channel to protect the dada. The main contribution of this article is illustrating the architecture and components of Skype networks and basically analyzing key Skype functions such as login, NAT and firewall traversal. Furthermore, it contains comparisons of Skype networks with VoIP networks regarding different scenarios. On that basis it reveals some reasons why Skype has much better performance than previous VoIP products. Keywords Voice over IP (VoIP), Skype, Peer-to-peer (p2p), Super Node (SN) 1. Introduction It is expected that real-time person-to-person communication, like IP telephony (VoIP), instant messaging, voice, video and data collaboration will be the next big wave of Internet usage. VoIP refers to technology that enables routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP network. Another technology is peer-to-peer, which is used for sharing content like audio, video, data or anything in digital format. Skype is a combination of these two technologies. It has much better performance by making use of advantages of both technologies.

  • Insight Into the Gtalk Protocol
1 Insight into the Gtalk Protocol Riyad Alshammari and A. Nur Zincir-Heywood Dalhousie University, Faculty of Computer Science Halifax NS B3H 1W5, Canada (riyad,zincir)@cs.dal.ca Abstract Google talk (Gtalk) is an instant messeger and voice over IP client developed by Google in 2005. Gtalk can work across firewalls and has very good voice quality. It encrypts calls end-to-end, and stores user information in a centralized fashion. This paper analyzes fundamental Gtalk functions such as login, firewall traversal, and call establishment under different network scenarios. The analysis is performed by both active and passive measurement techniques to understand the Gtalk network traffic. Based on our analysis, we devised algorithms for login and call establishment processes as well as data flow models. I. INTRODUCTION Voice over IP (VoIP) is becoming a major communication service for enterprises and individuals since the cost of VoIP calls is low and the voice quality is getting better. To date, there are many VoIP products that are able to provide high call quality such as Skype [1], Google Talk (Gtalk) [2], Microsoft Messenger (MSN) [3], and Yahoo! Messenger (YMSG) [4]. However, few information has been documented about protocol design used by these VoIP clients since the protocols are not standardized, many of them are proprietary, and the creators of these softwares want to keep their information confidential and protect their protocol design form competitors. In this paper, we have generated and captured network traffic in order to determine the broad characteristics of one of the most recent and fast growing VoIP applications, Google Talk.

  • Can Skype Be More Satisfying? a Qoe-Centric Study of the FEC
HUANG LAYOUT 2/22/10 1:14 PM Page 2 Could Skype Be More Satisfying? A QoE-Centric Study of the FEC Mechanism in an Internet-Scale VoIP System Te-Yuan Huang, Stanford University Polly Huang, National Taiwan University Kuan-Ta Chen, Academia Sinica Po-Jung Wang, National Taiwan University Abstract The phenomenal growth of Skype in recent years has surpassed all expectations. Much of the application’s success is attributed to its FEC mechanism, which adds redundancy to voice streams to sustain audio quality under network impairments. Adopting the quality of experience approach (i.e., measuring the mean opinion scores), we examine how much redundancy Skype adds to its voice streams and systematically explore the optimal level of redundancy for different network and codec settings. This study reveals that Skype’s FEC mechanism, not so surprisingly, falls in the ballpark, but there is surprisingly a significant margin for improvement to ensure consistent user satisfaction. here is no doubt that Skype is the most popular VoIP data, at the error concealment level. service.
