Services Inc. (MWSI)-Emerald Green; ABS-CBN- Orange; BayanTel/ Radio Communications of the Philippines (RCPI)-Yellow; Lopez Inc./ Benpres Holdings Corporation (BHC)-Lilac; Sky and Pilipino Cable/Knowledge Channel-Royal Blue; Meralco-Gray; and First Gen-Red. The event kicked off with a solemn mass, fol- lowed by Lopez Group chairman Oscar M. Lopez's opening remarks. His speech centered on the early years of the Lopez Group and the many changes it has witnessed. "When we had our first sports fest, the Lopez Group was comprised of only six companies. Now, we have grown and hopefully will become bigger in the future." OML emphasized that the employees' total well being is very important, the reason he supported the sports fest, to keep the employees healthy and develop camaraderie among the member-compa- nies of the Lopez Group. He also expressed the wish that it be held every two years for the em- ployees to really get to know their kapamilya. Hosted by Winnie Cordero and Benjie Felipe of "Magandang Umaga, Bayan," the event proper started with the parade of colors led by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Band. Each team had their own gimmick during the pa- 1 2 rade, with the Meralco group coming with their own band and ati-atihan dancers. As tribute to their chairman, the participants spread out on the field to form the initials "OML" and were later captured by ABS-CBN's Sky Patrol for posteri- ty. Then it was game time. The hosts explained that the winners would be determined according to their total accumulated time, which will have a corresponding number of points. The team that gets the most number of points wins. After a brief stretching exercise, the partici- pants were all warmed up and ready to take their 3 positions. The first two events were the men's 5 4x100-meter relay race and the women's 4x50- 4 meter relay race. A 4x100-m mixed relay race for men and women featured two males and two fe- males per team. The fun games elicited cheers and laughter, es- pecially the "Catch the Dragon's Tail" game. It roused everyone to their feet as they cheered for their respective teams, which tried to snatch the flag attached to the "dragon's" tail. Then there was the egg relay race participated in by Lopez Group executives, who showed everyone how tough they could be in the playing field. In the end, the Lilac Team emerged victorious with a total of 110 points and took home P20,000 8 9 10 in cash. Tied for second place were the Powder Blue and Gray teams, which got a total of 100 points; the cash prizes for the second (P15,000) and third placers (P10,000) were combined and split evenly between the two teams, so Powder Blue and Gray received P12,500 each. The other teams were ranked as follows: tied for fourth place were the Red and Royal Blue teams with a total of 90 points; sixth place went to the Yellow team with a total of 82 points; sev- enth place, the Orange team with 80 points; and at eighth place, the Green team with 76 points. Each team took home P6,000 as cash prize. If things go according to OML's wish, the teams will meet again after two years. It will be something the employees will look forward to the 13 14 15 next time around. LOPEZLINK June 2005 7
