Awarded a B.A in Drawing and Painting she has received several awards and public commissions and is a regular exhibitor throughout Scotland. In her work she combines colour, composition and tones to distil the harmonies and moods she sees in the landscapes around her. Sonas is an exciting new talent appearing in the Ecosse catalogue for the first time in 2006. In 1996 a near fatal heart attack encouraged him to work towards giving up teaching and becoming a full time painter. He is now considered one of the region’s finest talents and his critically acclaimed landscapes are much in demand. His art is highly collected and his designs for buildings such as the Glasgow School of Art and House for an Art Lover have brought him lasting fame and much retrospective praise. He met the Artist Margaret Macdonald, who was to become his wife in 1893. They married in 1900. The Glasgow Girls included Bessie Macnicol, Annie French and Jessie M King, and all went on to greatly influence the Art Nouveau and Illustrative movements. Margaret often contributed to her husband’s projects. He took tango lessons for over a year before his first picture on the subject. Born in Greenock, Andrew graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1988. In his early twenties he received 2 Elizabeth Greenshields awards, which enabled him to travel and work in Italy and Spain, producing figure compositions conveying a timeless lack of action. He has had one man shows, notably in Edinburgh and Amsterdam and has exhibited in many group shows across Britain. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

Epsom College: 1922-1929 HUGH ACTON (born 1911). M.B.E., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. (Eng.) [Epsom College 1922-1929] was the son of Lieutenant-Colonel H. W. Acton, I.M.S., brother of Major Gerald Acton, I.A. [Epsom College 1924-1932], and father of David John Acton [Epsom College 1954-1957]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and went into general practice at Upminster, Essex. During the Second World War he served as a Captain in the R.A.M.C. (1939-1945), in India and Burma. In 1945 he was awarded the M.B.E. for outstanding work in Meiktila, Burma. Apart from medicine, Hugh Acton was an important portrait photographer, much in demand with leading stage personalities. The index to the first 28 volumes was one large index with no sub-divisions. As a great number of queries were published it was decided to include these in a section of their own from volume 29 onwards. From volume 41 the index was split into the following sections: General index; Article Titles; Contributors; Reviews; Work in Progress; Queries. A separate section for Illustrations was included in the index for volumes 45-52. NUMBERING There has not been uniformity in the numbering format used by the different compilers of the indexes. A volume covers one year during which 4 journals were issued usually in March, June, September and December. In the current index these have been harmonised to follow the most commonly used pattern: Volume number - Roman numerals capitals Journal number - Roman numerals lower case Page number - Arabic numerals Example: XXXIX.iv.116 -Volume 39, December issue, page 116. Page numbering Page numbering in the journals has not been consistent over the years.

In this early industrial, pre-railway period, the merchant and professional classes of local towns provided a clientele which encouraged artists, often locally trained, to develop local schools and traditions which reflected the interests of their patrons. The best of these artists were aware of recent developments and trends in the wider art world, yet found sufficient patronage locally to sustain their practices and maintain a professional artistic presence in the rapidly growing industrial towns of this part of Scotland. Pre-eminent amongst these local schools was the group of artists who worked in Greenock and the Inverclyde area in the first half of the nineteenth century. These artists worked in the fields of portraiture and landscape painting as well as the local tradition of marine painting, a specialty of artists working in Inverclyde until the present day.
