Sonas MacLean Sonas was born and brought up on the coast of Caithness in the far north of Scotland where she learned an appreciation of the sea and a love of coastal scenes and small harbours. Awarded a B.A in Drawing and Painting she has received several awards and public commissions and is a regular exhibitor throughout Scotland. In her work she combines colour, composition and tones to distil the harmonies and moods she sees in the landscapes around her. Sonas is an exciting new talent appearing in the Ecosse catalogue for the first time in 2006.

John Lowrie Morrison Born in 1948, John attended The Glasgow School of Art gaining his diploma in 1971. He won a travelling scholarship from the Royal Academy, London in 1972. He lives and paints in the West Coast of Scotland and describes his work as “Expressionism influenced by Van Gogh”. Considered Scotland’s most prolific and successful Artist, his work is in many public and private collections.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh An Architect,Painter and Furniture Designer, Mackintosh was many years ahead of his time. His art is highly collected and his designs for buildings such as the Glasgow School of Art and House for an Art Lover have brought him lasting fame and much retrospective praise. He met the Artist Margaret Macdonald, who was to become his wife in 1893. They married in 1900.

Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh A member of the “Glasgow Girls”, an active group of Artists based in Glasgow at the turn of the Century, Margaret Macdonald married Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1900. The Glasgow Girls included Bessie Macnicol, Annie French and Jessie M King, and all went on to greatly influence the Art Nouveau and Illustrative movements. Andrew Fitzpatrick Andrew Fitzpatrick’s recent work has been a series of oils on Argentine Tango, which fits with a desire to depict elegance in the human figure and harmonious interaction between men and women. He took tango lessons for over a year before his first picture on the subject. Born in Greenock, Andrew graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1988. In his early twenties he received 2 Elizabeth Greenshields awards, which enabled him to travel and work in Italy and Spain, producing figure compositions conveying a timeless lack of action. He has had one man shows, notably in Edinburgh and Amsterdam and has exhibited in many group shows across Britain.

Alexander Millar Alexander Miller is a modern phenomenon first published by Ecosse in 2004. Virtually unknown until 2003 his humorous paintings have exploded on the art scene, most noticeably his paintings depicting flat capped men in a variety of poses.

Born in 1960 in the little village of Springfield, 5 miles from Kilmarnock, his images reflect memories from his childhood. Although growing up in the 60’s, village life in Springfield was stuck in what seemed more like the 40’s and these images have been the inspiration behind our selection of prints.

Sam Skelton Born in Glasgow in 1949, Skelton began his career as a graphic designer, studying at Glasgow School of Art and only recently - as demand for his paintings has grown - has concentrated on art full-time.

Skelton’s subjects are nostalgic evocations of Scotland’s industrial past: working class heroes, a couple on a park bench, children at play, and groups of men in dark overcoats watching football.

The influence of the great industrial painter J S Lowry is clear and Skelton’s paintings are suffused with the dark, low light of Scotland in winter often with the factory roof on the horizon line.

Skelton exhibits in Glasgow, London and Dublin and is being put forward for the National Gallery, London, in 2006.

David Farquharson Born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, he began his career as an apprentice decorator. He later became a self taught artist but did study for a time under Wm. Geddes. After living in Edinburgh and London he moved South to Seene Cove, Cornwall. He mainly painted Scottish Highland scenes although he also painted extensively in Holland.

Peter Graham Peter Graham was born in Glasgow in 1959, attended the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1980. He worked for several years as a film editor before turning to painting full time in 1986. A year in Singapore as The British Council Artist in residence at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, followed. Peter has a flamboyant style with its unique detailed brushwork combined with looser, fluid strokes creating vibrant contrasts of pure colour, line and tone. Peter spends the summer months in the French Riviera with the atmosphere, passion and beauty of the Mediterranean reflected in our selected images.
