Applications may be inspected free of charge at the Office of the Traffic Commissioner in Leeds by any person who carries written authorisation to act in that capacity. Objections against published applications may be made in writing by a Chief Officer of Police, a local authority, a planning authority or a prescribed trade union or association within 21 days of the date on which notice of an application is published in Applications and Decisions. Objections must be made either on the grounds that any of the requirements listed in Section 13 of the Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995 are not met and/or that a nominated operating centre will be unsuitable for use as such. A copy of the objection must be sent by the objector to the applicant at the same time that it is sent to the Traffic Commissioner. The onus of proof in terms of the grounds on which an objection is lodged lies with the objector. You may fax a copy of your objection to 0113 2488521 but please note that you must send the original signed document through the post. Classification of Operator Licences – There are three classes of licence: • A Restricted (R) licence authorises the use of a goods vehicle on public roads in Great Britain for the carriage of the licence holder’s own goods in the course of his trade or business. The licence holder cannot carry goods for other people for hire or reward; • A Standard National (SN) licence allows the licence holder to carry both his own goods and goods for other people for hire or reward, on public roads in Great Britain. He can also carry his own goods on journeys abroad; • A Standard International (SI) licence allows the licence holder to carry both his own goods and goods for other people for hire or reward. These activities can be undertaken both in Great Britain and on international journeys. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

[Epsom College 1924-1932], and father of David John Acton [Epsom College 1954-1957]. He received his medical education at the Middlesex Hospital, and went into general practice at Upminster, Essex. During the Second World War he served as a Captain in the R.A.M.C. (1939-1945), in India and Burma. In 1945 he was awarded the M.B.E. for outstanding work in Meiktila, Burma. As a great number of queries were published it was decided to include these in a section of their own from volume 29 onwards. From volume 41 the index was split into the following sections: General index; Article Titles; Contributors; Reviews; Work in Progress; Queries. A separate section for Illustrations was included in the index for volumes 45-52. NUMBERING There has not been uniformity in the numbering format used by the different compilers of the indexes. A volume covers one year during which 4 journals were issued usually in March, June, September and December. In the current index these have been harmonised to follow the most commonly used pattern: Volume number - Roman numerals capitals Journal number - Roman numerals lower case Page number - Arabic numerals Example: XXXIX.iv.116 -Volume 39, December issue, page 116. The records have been arranged into twenty eight series (see introduction for details) and the finding aid has been separated into these series to make it easier to download from our website Part 3 contains a list of the papers of the second William Forbes of Callendar (1806-1855) from his majority in 1831, along with papers of his wife, Lady Louisa Charteris, and their children. Louisa’s papers include a series of inventories of household property compiled at the time of her marriage. The papers also include correspondence on patronage and constituency matters as William Forbes was MP for Stirlingshire, 1835-1837 and 1841-1855. In her work she combines colour, composition and tones to distil the harmonies and moods she sees in the landscapes around her. In this early industrial, pre-railway period, the merchant and professional classes of local towns provided a clientele which encouraged artists, often locally trained, to develop local schools and traditions which reflected the interests of their patrons. The best of these artists were aware of recent developments and trends in the wider art world, yet found sufficient patronage locally to sustain their practices and maintain a professional artistic presence in the rapidly growing industrial towns of this part of Scotland. Pre-eminent amongst these local schools was the group of artists who worked in Greenock and the Inverclyde area in the first half of the nineteenth century. These artists worked in the fields of portraiture and landscape painting as well as the local tradition of marine painting, a specialty of artists working in Inverclyde until the present day.
