However, the exact times, days, and destinations may vary for your group. Day 1 -Depart from your hometown and travel northward just a few miles north of America’s Canadian border to the exquisite French-Canadian Province of Quebec … an area steeped in European culture and proud of its French, British, and Native American heritage. Lunch/rest stops on your own will be made along the way. Upon arrival in Montreal in late afternoon you will check into your motel and meet your Canadian escort who will be with your group during your stay in Canada … helping you discover the beauty and wonder of predominantly French-speaking Quebec. Later, depart with your escort for dinner and entertainment at a popular restaurant in the area. Day 2 -After an early breakfast, meet your guide for a morning tour of Montreal, which will include Place Ville-Marie, a famous downtown skyscraper, and the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Old Montreal. You will also see the Olympic Stadium, Mont Royal, and St. Joseph Shrine. After the tour, there is time for lunch on your own in Montreal's Underground City before departing for Quebec City. Located directly under the heart of the city, it is 19 miles long and the brightly lit, scrupulously clean passageways, link thousands of boutiques, major hotels, restaurants, universities, dozens of office buildings and attractions. Arrive in late afternoon for check-in at your motel, then prepare for dinner at a fabulous restaurant in the area. Day 3 -After an early breakfast, board your bus with your escort and depart for a morning tour of Quebec City, which will include Old and New Quebec. Visit the Shrine of Ste-Anne de Beaupre where you will have lunch on your own and time to tour the famous, beautiful and sacred shrine. Later, visit Notre-Dame de Quebec Cathedral before continuing to the city's most famous landmark -- Chateau Frontenac. There will be time to explore this fabulous and famous hotel, then experience a century-old tradition with an Old-Fashioned Tea including fresh fruits, finger sandwiches, delicious scones, small pastries, petits fours, chocolate and a selection of exquisite teas. Afterwards, return to your hotel to freshen up before departing for dinner at a popular restaurant in the area. Tonight, enjoy a fabulous 3-D multimedia show at the Quebec Experience Theater. Day 4 - Enjoy breakfast, then check out and depart for Cap-de-la-Madeleine for a visit to Our Lady of the Cape Shrine.     CHAPTER ONE The Montréal Harbourfront: A History The City and the St. Lawrence – Analysis of Development Issues and Potential Introduction The story of Montréal's old harbour is at the heart of much of Canada's economic, political and social his- tory, and can consequently be considered of national significance. It is a story rooted in its geography, which combines three features highly conducive to the development of a dynamic port. First, the area forms a natural harbour- an essential precondition for the settlement of New France during the 17th century, when rivers were the only important links to the outside world. It is also situated at the confluence of three major waterways offering access to the interior of the North American continent (the 8 St. Lawrence, Ottawa and Richelieu rivers). Finally, the harbour is located at the western boundary of the navigable section of the St. Lawrence. Since navigation was hampered by the Lachine Rapids, it was for a significant time an obligatory stopping point, as well as a hub for the exploration and development of the hinterland. Birthplace of the modern port of Montréal (today North America's largest inland fresh- water port), the old harbourfront is also, more broadly, the cradle of Montréal and its surroundings.
