Music in The Heart of Manila: Quiapo from the Colonial Period to Contemporary Times: Tradition, Change, Continuity Ma. Patricia Brillantes-Silvestre A brief history of Quiapo Quiapo is a key district of Manila, having as its boundaries the winding Pasig River and the districts of Sta. Cruz, San Miguel and Sampaloc. Its name comes from a floating water lily specie called kiyapo (Pistia stratiotes), with thick, light-green leaves, similar to a tiny, open cabbage. Pre-1800 maps of Manila show Quiapo as originally a cluster of islands with swampy lands and shallow waters (Andrade 2006, 40 in Zialcita), the perfect breeding place for the plant that gave its name to the district. Quiapo’s recorded history began in 1578 with the arrival of the Franciscans who established their main missionary headquarters in nearby Sta. Ana (Andrade 42), taking Quiapo, then a poor fishing village, into its sheepfold. They founded Quiapo Church and declared its parish as that of St. John the Baptist. The Jesuits arrived in 1581, and the discalced Augustinians in 1622 founded a chapel in honor of San Sebastian, at the site where the present Gothic-style basilica now stands. At about this time there were around 30,000 Chinese living in Manila and its surrounding areas, but the number swiftly increased due to the galleon trade, which brought in Mexican currency in exchange for Chinese silk and other products (Wickberg 1965). The Chinese, noted for their business acumen, had begun to settle in the district when Manila’s business center shifted there in the early 1900s (originally from the Parian/Chinese ghetto beside Intramuros in the 1500s, to Binondo in the 1850s, to Sta.Cruz at the turn of the century). -

Webb Draft of 06/16/09 Webb - Cruising Guide to the Phillippines Page 2 INTRODUCTION The Philippines is the second largest archipelago in the world after Indonesia, with around 7,000 islands. Relatively few yachts cruise here, but there seem to be more every year. In most areas it is still rare to run across another yacht. There are pristine coral reefs, turquoise bays and snug anchorages, as well as more metropolitan delights. The Filipino people are very friendly and sometimes embarrassingly hospitable. Their culture is a unique mixture of indigenous, Spanish, Asian and American. Philippine charts are inexpensive and reasonably good. English is widely (although not universally) spoken. The cost of living is very reasonable. This book is intended to meet the particular needs of the cruising yachtsman with a boat in the 10-20 meter range. It supplements (but is not intended to replace) conventional navigational materials, a discussion of which can be found below on page 16. I have tried to make this book accurate, but responsibility for the safety of your vessel and its crew must remain yours alone. CONVENTIONS IN THIS BOOK Coordinates are given for various features to help you find them on a chart, not for uncritical use with GPS. In most cases the position is approximate, and is only given to the nearest whole minute. Where coordinates are expressed more exactly, in decimal minutes or minutes and seconds, the relevant chart is mentioned or WGS 84 is the datum used. See the References section (page 157) for specific details of the chart edition used. -

GALEDECEMBER 2010Ó VOL. 1 NO.N 1 10 PAGES Official publication of the Cavite Studies Center • DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY-DASMARIÑAS 12th Annual Seminar on Cavite history and culture Disaster,calamity awareness discussed To assess the geographical condition of the province and to single out the preparedness capacity of Caviteños in terms of catastrophe and calamities, the Cavite Studies Center (CSC) convened its 12th annual seminar on history and culture entitled Desastres y Calamidades: Cavite and the Signs of the Times. The event took place at the Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite on September 24. Public school teachers from Kawit and Dasmariñas and local government officials of Kawit, Noveleta, Naic, Ternate, Trece Martires, and Imus attended the seminar. The opening ceremonies Before the lecture proper, Kawit Mayor Reynaldo ‘Tik’ Aguinaldo commended the CSC regarding the importance of holding such activity. This, accordingly, will give the audience the ability to determine the actions to be done once a calamity or a disaster happens. Former Prime Minister Cesar EA Virata stressed that population growth which contribute to environmental and garbage problems is one factor in the occurrence of calamities. He even suggested some measures such as education and concentrated efforts for a cleaner surroundings that Caviteños have to observe in order to lessen the problem. CSC Director Aquino Garcia, on the other hand, delivered the conference overview. It is the cradle of the Philippine Revolution and the birthplace of Philippine Independence. It also teems with natural resources and fantastic landscapes, and is conveniently located just south of metropolitan Manila. 1000H Arrive in Kawit, Cavite then proceed to 3 hours tour. This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the classical era of music in the Philippines and the pre-war art music manuscript collection of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Music that needs immediate preservation and restoration. The music scores included in this collection were created by renowned Filipino composers and National Artists for Music. It also discusses the initiatives done by the university and concerned faculty members and students to prolong the life and usability of these music scores, as they are still always being played in concert halls. This kind of archival music manuscripts restoration project is the first in the university since the UP College of Music Library does not have its own conservation facility. A simple laboratory was set up by the project proponents and the restoration process involves digital imaging of the originals, evaluation and documentation, deacidification, cleaning, mending, encapsulation and boxing/binding. a group exhibit by Kansilay Visual Arts Society Education has as its ultimate objective the improvement of a person’s quality of life. It offers to underprivileged adults and children a chance to escape from poverty. It is thus an essential tool for the economic, social and cultural development of all populations around the world. KanVas KanVAS (Kansilay Visual Artist Society), is a group of artists (Kansilay Visual Artist Society) unified with the advocacy of documenting people culture, tradition, and heritage through creative visual presentations. The group is composed of artists from different art disciplines and background and aims to impart their insights on life by showing it in their color palettes, strokes, pressure and the way they see their subjects. They are more into the representational approach in painting in which have painted in their subjects in their own interpretation with what it depicts in reality. The group has started it’s journey on 2008 and it’s members are all from Silay City. The group was initially formed to merge other artists from Silay city. They have exhibited their works in Bernardino Jalandoni Museum, Dizon Ramos Museum as well as the Negros Museum all from Negros Occidental. They went on hiatus last 2011 and went back to the scene again last October 11, 2014 with “Palanublion”. This time the members are not exclusively from Silay but also different parts of the Negros Occidental and to further extend their reach. We all know for a fact that globally, a great number of children are unable to go to school. -
