Neff Western Michigan University SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 2 Abstract Music is a part of daily life for most people, leading the messages within music to permeate people’s consciousness. This is concerning when the messages in music follow discriminatory themes such as sexism or racism. Sexism in music is becoming well documented, but some genres are scrutinized more heavily than others. Rap and hip-hop get much more attention in popular media for being sexist than do genres such as country and rock. My goal was to show whether or not genres such as country and rock are as sexist as rap and hip-hop. In this project, I analyze the top ten songs of 2013 from six genres looking for five themes of sexism. The six genres used are rap, hip-hop, country, rock, alternative, and dance.

  • Deana Carter Danny Myrick
    Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Blanco Brown in October 2019, he knew the band had a hit on its hands. It took more than a year for other stations to agree.     Volume 85 - Issue 14 February 8, 2013 Veteran loses friends, gains faith AFTER SERVING IN MIDDLE east, RAYMOND FRYE PURSUES A RENEWED LIFE at NORTHWesteRN BY MEGAN CURRENT Veteran Raymond Frye joined the military as a teenager. He served for eight years as an infantry soldier, and he has been enrolled at Northwestern since January. Frye started attending a community college right after high school, but he later made the decision to join the military at the age of 19. His family was supportive of his decision. “I have a dad and uncle in the infantry, a brother in the Air Force and a cousin in the Marines,” Frye said. “I joined because of my sense of adventure.” Frye served as an infantry soldier in the Army and Air Force. He started his basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia. Frye trained for two months at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California before being deployed to Iraq. While deployed in Iraq, Frye was a combat soldier. Frye said he had several duties, which included apprehending high-value targets (looking for terrorists), providing security for convoys and helping eliminate villagers’ threats (terrorists). While Frye was in Iraq, he worked on two campaigns. The first mission, Operation Iraqi Freedom, was designed for combat operations, which included finding and killing terrorists. This mission is an ongoing battle that is still in effect today. The second mission, Operation New Dawn, didn’t work the way it was planned. “New Dawn was meant for hearts and minds. We trained the Iraqis for the military transition to allow their military to regain power,” Frye said.

    Humble and Kind By: MaKayleigh Lackey “That was the dumbest answer I’ve ever heard! Maybe you should be in the CDC classes!” The hateful comment resounded throughout the room, dripping malice from every syllable. My friend, trying to make a joke, had uttered something so hurtful that it had shattered my heart. The students around him laughed, too afraid to comment on his rudeness. The room seemed to close in around me. My brain screamed not to confront my friend, but my heart was saying stand up for the CDC students who were not there to defend themselves. It felt like I had been drowning in a cold sweat for hours before I finally spoke up. “Being in the CDC classes doesn’t mean being dumb. That wasn’t a very nice thing to say.” As the last word rolled off my tongue, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief wash over me. My classmates sat in embarrassed silence, marveling at my bravery. Although it was extremely hard to stand up to a friend, I knew in my heart that I had done the right thing. After this confrontation, I began noticing snide comments like this throughout every class and hallway. My heart grew more fragmented after each comment I heard from my peers. That first, fateful afternoon faded to the back of my mind, but stayed ever so present in my heart. I was soon blessed with an opportunity to share my set of ethics with my school: designing a video for our CDC students. This video would stress the importance of treating the CDC students equally.

As you may know, last year’s Hall of Fame raised an unprecedented $1 million for conservation, advancing priority projects like the reestablishment of a healthy Pronghorn population in the Trans-Pecos; conserving Texas rivers; safeguarding the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle; and supporting Texas State Parks to connect families back to nature. We hope you can join us in making the 2014 Conservation Hall of Fame a celebration to remember.
