Running head: SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 1 Sexism Across Musical Genres: A Comparison Sarah E. Neff Western Michigan University SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 2 Abstract Music is a part of daily life for most people, leading the messages within music to permeate people’s consciousness. This is concerning when the messages in music follow discriminatory themes such as sexism or racism. Sexism in music is becoming well documented, but some genres are scrutinized more heavily than others. Rap and hip-hop get much more attention in popular media for being sexist than do genres such as country and rock. My goal was to show whether or not genres such as country and rock are as sexist as rap and hip-hop. In this project, I analyze the top ten songs of 2013 from six genres looking for five themes of sexism. The six genres used are rap, hip-hop, country, rock, alternative, and dance.

  • Deana Carter Danny Myrick
Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Danny Myrick DANNY MYRICK is an award winning songwriter and musician based here in Nashville.

2021 March 15 CountryInsider.com | Sign Up For Daily Email Here Resurfacing In A Pandemic: Why Radio Re-Embraced Parmalee. It all begins with a song. When Steve Stewart, director of operations for Cox Media Group Orlando and PD at “K92.3” WWKA, first heard Parmalee’s “Just the Way” feat. Blanco Brown in October 2019, he knew the band had a hit on its hands. It took more than a year for other stations to agree. Parmalee, who first played Stewart the song on a tour bus after an Orlando show, is No. 1 on this week’s Mediabase country chart — eight years after last topping the chart with “Carolina” in 2013. The band released “Just the Way” December 2019 and WWKA became the first station to add it the following month. • Veteran Loses Friends, Gains Faith After Serving in Middle East, Raymond Frye Pursues a Renewed Life at Northwestern
Volume 85 - Issue 14 February 8, 2013 Veteran loses friends, gains faith AFTER SERVING IN MIDDLE east, RAYMOND FRYE PURSUES A RENEWED LIFE at NORTHWesteRN BY MEGAN CURRENT Veteran Raymond Frye joined the military as a teenager. He served for eight years as an infantry soldier, and he has been enrolled at Northwestern since January. Frye started attending a community college right after high school, but he later made the decision to join the military at the age of 19. His family was supportive of his decision. “I have a dad and uncle in the infantry, a brother in the Air Force and a cousin in the Marines,” Frye said. “I joined because of my sense of adventure.” Frye served as an infantry soldier in the Army and Air Force. He started his basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia. Frye trained for two months at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin in California before being deployed to Iraq. While deployed in Iraq, Frye was a combat soldier. Frye said he had several duties, which included apprehending high-value targets (looking for terrorists), providing security for convoys and helping eliminate villagers’ threats (terrorists). While Frye was in Iraq, he worked on two campaigns. The first mission, Operation Iraqi Freedom, was designed for combat operations, which included finding and killing terrorists. This mission is an ongoing battle that is still in effect today. The second mission, Operation New Dawn, didn’t work the way it was planned. “New Dawn was meant for hearts and minds. We trained the Iraqis for the military transition to allow their military to regain power,” Frye said.

  • Humble and Kind By: Makayleigh Lackey
Humble and Kind By: MaKayleigh Lackey “That was the dumbest answer I’ve ever heard! Maybe you should be in the CDC classes!” The hateful comment resounded throughout the room, dripping malice from every syllable. My friend, trying to make a joke, had uttered something so hurtful that it had shattered my heart. The students around him laughed, too afraid to comment on his rudeness. The room seemed to close in around me. My brain screamed not to confront my friend, but my heart was saying stand up for the CDC students who were not there to defend themselves. It felt like I had been drowning in a cold sweat for hours before I finally spoke up. “Being in the CDC classes doesn’t mean being dumb. That wasn’t a very nice thing to say.” As the last word rolled off my tongue, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief wash over me. My classmates sat in embarrassed silence, marveling at my bravery. Although it was extremely hard to stand up to a friend, I knew in my heart that I had done the right thing. After this confrontation, I began noticing snide comments like this throughout every class and hallway. My heart grew more fragmented after each comment I heard from my peers. That first, fateful afternoon faded to the back of my mind, but stayed ever so present in my heart. I was soon blessed with an opportunity to share my set of ethics with my school: designing a video for our CDC students. This video would stress the importance of treating the CDC students equally.

June 3, 2013, Issue 348 San Jose: Nurturing New Music If the movie Trading Places hasn’t settled the nature vs. nurture debate, perhaps the story of KRTY/San Jose and its partnership with the Rodeo Club will. Over the course of eight years, the station and 1,000-capacity bar have hosted country’s biggest names ... long before they really had names. The result is one of country’s most vibrant new music scenes. “Fans of their station are conditioned to not only embrace new music, but new acts,” says Stoney Creek VP/Promotion Chris Loss. “And they do so time and time again. And they do it with passion. I don’t know if there are any other stations that marry the on-air and live aspect better.” KRTY GM Nate Deaton breaks down the keys to the partnership’s success and recounts its remarkable history: “Probably like a lot of successful things, it got started quite by accident,” he admits. Initially, the station was hoping to find a new partner venue following the closing of local institution the Saddle Flatts Out: Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts get to know WNSH/New Rack, which had hosted everyone from Loretta to Garth. “We York’s John Foxx as the trio’s Live & Loud Tour kicked off at Jones tried a bar night at the Rodeo Club for a long time, it just never Beach in Wantagh, NY Friday (5/31). worked. We started doing shows in there in 2005 and as bad as the bar nights were, the shows were that good.” Main Event: 2013 CMA Music Festival The emphasis on new artists and new music started early.

  • Redfish! Big Bend! Bighorn Sheep! and the Next Fifty! These Are Just A
50 Redfish! Big Bend! Bighorn Sheep! And the Next Fifty! These are just a few of the wild things and wild places that will be celebrated on Saturday, March 29, 2014 when Texas Parks and Wildlife will present the Texas Conservation Hall of Fame at the Friedkin Corporate Campus in Houston, Texas. This year’s dinner will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and will feature special guest entertainment Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. It promises to be an extraordinary night that will honor 50 years of conserving Texas’ wild things and wild places, generate critical support for priority projects that meaningfully conserve Texas’ rich lands, waters and wildlife, and explore what the next 50 years may have in store. The Conservation Hall of Fame benefits Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, whose mission is to conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for current and future generations. As you may know, last year’s Hall of Fame raised an unprecedented $1 million for conservation, advancing priority projects like the reestablishment of a healthy Pronghorn population in the Trans-Pecos; conserving Texas rivers; safeguarding the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle; and supporting Texas State Parks to connect families back to nature. We hope you can join us in making the 2014 Conservation Hall of Fame a celebration to remember. It is a special opportunity to provide a fitting tribute to one of our state’s most outstanding organizations, safeguard Texas’ exceptional natural treasures, and enjoy a spectacular evening among like-minded friends.
