Cancel Culture: Posthuman Hauntologies in Digital Rhetoric and the Latent Values of Virtual Community Networks
CANCEL CULTURE: POSTHUMAN HAUNTOLOGIES IN DIGITAL RHETORIC AND THE LATENT VALUES OF VIRTUAL COMMUNITY NETWORKS By Austin Michael Hooks Heather Palmer Rik Hunter Associate Professor of English Associate Professor of English (Chair) (Committee Member) Matthew Guy Associate Professor of English (Committee Member) CANCEL CULTURE: POSTHUMAN HAUNTOLOGIES IN DIGITAL RHETORIC AND THE LATENT VALUES OF VIRTUAL COMMUNITY NETWORKS By Austin Michael Hooks A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Master of English The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Chattanooga, Tennessee August 2020 ii Copyright © 2020 By Austin Michael Hooks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT This study explores how modern epideictic practices enact latent community values by analyzing modern call-out culture, a form of public shaming that aims to hold individuals responsible for perceived politically incorrect behavior via social media, and cancel culture, a boycott of such behavior and a variant of call-out culture. As a result, this thesis is mainly concerned with the capacity of words, iterated within the archive of social media, to haunt us— both culturally and informatically. Through hauntology, this study hopes to understand a modern discourse community that is bound by an epideictic framework that specializes in the deconstruction of the individual’s ethos via the constant demonization and incitement of past, current, and possible social media expressions. The primary goal of this study is to understand how these practices function within a capitalistic framework and mirror the performativity of capital by reducing affective human interactions to that of a transaction. -
MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series
MCA 700 Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan MCA-700 Midline/Reissue Series: By the time the reissue series reached MCA-700, most of the ABC reissues had been accomplished in the MCA 500-600s. MCA decided that when full price albums were converted to midline prices, the albums needed a new number altogether rather than just making the administrative change. In this series, we get reissues of many MCA albums that were only one to three years old, as well as a lot of Decca reissues. Rather than pay the price for new covers and labels, most of these were just stamped with the new numbers in gold ink on the front covers, with the same jackets and labels with the old catalog numbers. 'Cancel Culture' Doesn't Stifle Debate, but It Does Challenge the Old Order Billy Bragg
'Cancel culture' doesn't stifle debate, but it does challenge the old order Billy Bragg Speech is only free when everyone has a voice – that’s why young people are angry Outside Broadcasting House in London, the BBC has erected a statue to one of its former employees, George Orwell. The author leans forward, hand on hip, as if to make a telling point. Carved into the wall beside him is a quote from the preface of Animal Farm: “If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” It’s a snappy slogan that fits neatly into a tweet, but whenever I walk past this effigy of the English writer that I most admire, it makes me cringe. Surely the author of Nineteen Eighty-Four would understand that people don’t want to hear that 2+2=5? For Orwell’s quote is not a defence of liberty; it’s a demand for licence, and has become a foundational slogan for those who wilfully misconstrue one for the other. Over the past decade, the right to make inflammatory statements has become a hot button issue for the reactionary right, who have constructed tropes such as political correctness and virtue signalling to enable them to police the limits of social change while portraying themselves as victims of an organised assault on liberty itself. The latest creation in their war against accountability is “cancel culture”, an ill-defined notion that takes in corporate moves to recognise structural racism, the toppling of statues, social media bullying, public shaming and other diverse attempts to challenge the status quo. -

Issue 421 Old Milwaukee’S Best: WMIL There Aren’T Many Country Radio Stations That Pull Numbers Like Iheartmedia’S WMIL/Milwaukee
November 3, 2014, Issue 421 Old Milwaukee’s Best: WMIL There aren’t many Country radio stations that pull numbers like iHeartMedia’s WMIL/Milwaukee. The August 2014 PPM saw the 30-year heritage station post its best ratings yet when it went 11.9 Persons 6+ with a weekly cume of 510,800. September was almost as good with an 11.6. The closest competition was Journal News/Talk WTMJ-AM with an 8.7. Country Aircheck reached out to 25-year ‘MIL PD Kerry Wolfe to find out what’s in the water in America’s 38th largest radio market. Going Rates: “It’s number one in almost every demo,” says Wolfe. “You have to look real hard to find a place it’s not number one – men, women, young, old.” He’s right. WMIL led the market in September with Persons 18-34 (12.7) and 25-54 (10.6), Wolfe shares. The station’s closest competitor in the 18-34 arena was Entercom Top 40 WXSS (9.2), while Saga Musical Wares: SESAC Nashville names Jerrod Niemann’s Rock WHQG had that distinction 25-54 (7.6). “Drink To That All Night” Song of the Year at last night’s That three-point spread between ‘MIL and its (11/2) Music Awards. Pictured (l-r) are SESAC’s Tim Fink, second-place challengers is fairly common, songwriter Lance Miller, publisher Tim McGraw, Niemann by the way. and SESAC’s Shannan Hatch and John Mullins. So what’s the appeal? “I think it’s just the Kerry Wolfe lifestyle of the people who live in Milwau- No Shave: Charts & Awards kee,” explains Wolfe. -
THE STAGING of the FEMALE BODY in University of Stavanger COUNTRY MUSIC [email protected]
MÜZİKTE TEMSİL & MÜZİKSEL TEMSİL II ‘STAND BY YOUR MAN’ Lise K. Özgen THE STAGING OF THE FEMALE BODY IN University of Stavanger COUNTRY MUSIC [email protected] I am going to look at performativity and expressions of femininity in popular music; more specifically in country music. An interesting example can be the Canadian singer d.lang, where the transition between women/man dynamic to a more ambiguous gender construction is fundamental in how lang represents herself through her songs. Performativity The connection between gender and performance has been discussed in many cultural theoretical settings, using the term ‘masquerade’. The term has become an important and nuanced theoretical aspect of femininity and its representation. Joan Riviere’s ‘Womanliness as a Masquerade’ from 1929 holds a key place in discussion of female sexuality in psychoanalysis. Riviere argued that femininity was a performance where there was no genuine femininity separate from the masquerade; there is no distinction between authentic womanliness and its masquerade. “Womanliness ... could be assumed and worn as a mask, both to hide the possession of masculinity and to avert the reprisals expected if she was found to possess it…” (Riviere 1929:213). According to this, gendered identities are produced and performed in everything one does, and there is no gendered identity separate from performance. Performance demands the idea of an act, where the performer constructs a fabricated or invented identity. In this context we can also include Judith Butler’s ideas about performativity. We as individuals create ourselves through activities. Performance is not something passive which carries in it an inherent meaning; instead we are created by active actions that confirm meaning.
