Enter here to win! 8.4.15 - It is extraordinary to consider that about 20 years ago Priorat was an unknown name in the roll call of Spanish wine regions. Today, much has changed. Priorat is now one of just two regions with a designated DOCa classification, a step up from plain DO, the other being Rioja. A band of friends René Barbier was the first of a group of winemakers to buy land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. Credit: Copyright 2015 Rosemary George It began in the late 1970s, when René Barbier bought land outside the village of Gratallops, the estate that was to become world famous as Clos Mogador. The first wine was made in 1989 and Barbier was joined by what he calls a band of copains, friends who had worked or studied together and went on to develop their own estates, such as Alvaro Palacios from Rioja. However, Priorat has always been a wine area, with vineyards run by the priory of Scala Dei, the ruins of which nestle at the foot of the dramatic cliffs of Montsant. In 1835, the Spanish government confiscated all church property, and then the region suffered badly from the phylloxera (the aphid that was imported into Europe on American vines and ultimately destroyed most of the vineyards of Europe, until the remedy of grafting European vines onto American rootstock was discovered).

  • Manyetes’ Adventure Begins in 1999 and Lasts Until Today
www.closmogador.com Manyetes’ adventure begins in 1999 and lasts until today. Its evolution has been impressive. We started off making a wine for a Belgian friend of ours, Luc van Iseghem. He had a vineyard in the area called Manyetes within the subzone of Gratallops, his wine was named Clos Manyetes and so he registered this name. It was a 6-hectare plot which we planted with Grenache, Syrah and a bit of Cabernet. In order to improve this wine more quickly, in 1974 we rented the adjoining Carignan plot planted on slope. Somewhere along the timeline, each grape plantation was vinified under the brand name of Solertia by another owner. Except the Carignan plot which Clos Mogador rented and from which produced the first Vi de Vila1 de Gratallops (vintages 2007 till 2017). In 2018, knowing the great poten- tial of this area, Clos Mogador bought the plot, together with another ad- jacent one, planted around 1961/62 and evidently also acquired the brand name Manyetes (around 5 hectares). We are well aware that pursuing this project is an irrational and emotion- al decision, since the vineyard has a very low yield and is subject to very extreme climate conditions. But on the other hand this vineyard express- es, like no other place does, the transparency of its terroir and therefore it provides a unique and exceptional wine. Our aim is that Manyetes wine, from 2018 onwards, becomes a Vi de Parat- ge2, that is to say Wine from a Defined Small Area so that, later on, it can achieve the category label of Gran Vi de Vinya Classificada4 or Great Wine from a Classified Vineyard.

Crémant de Bourgogne, Lucien Bouillot is a fabulous sparkler from France’s Burgundy region. We carry both the Brut and Rose and cannot recommend them highly enough for lovers of classicly styled, dry bubbly. The Brut shows off a yeasty, toasty aroma, dry and full, with a hint of baked apple on the finish. The flavors and bouquet of the rosé are brushed with a wild raspberry sense, while still remaining dry. Really lovely. 10% case discount, mixed with other wines or solid, applies. • Ferrer Bobet «Vinyes Velles» Priorato Kr
VIN NUMMER 1: COSTERS DEL SEGRE (CATALONIA) RØD: 2013 Castell D`Encus «Thalarn» Costers del Segre kr. 400,- 100 % Syrah Robert Parkers Wine Advocate 93 p, Vinous Antonio Galloni: 93 p, Guía Peñín 93 p, Cellar Tracker 93 p ( basert på 3 brukeres mening ) 2019 – 2026 Winemaker Notes Red violet in color with a complex and intense nose. There are floral aromas and spices, such as clove and pepper on the nose. The palate is silky with nerve at the start but soft tannins with fresh fruit, cherry, flavors along with a spicy and undergrowth finish. This wine will develop all of its complexity in the bottle. Critical Acclaim Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 93 ? Points One of the most expressive Syrahs from Spain, the 2013 Thalarn carries the name of the village where the winery is located. It was fermented in stone lagares (from the 12th century!), oak vats and stainless steel tanks and then transferred to new French oak barrels for malolactic and 11 months élevage. The nose does not show the oak, as the herbal character is stronger. At first I got some animal aromas, faint leather and a touch of tempera paint that developed strong medicinal notes with time in the glass. At the same time it's quite a mineral, stony wine. The palate is medium-bodied, with a very fine texture and polished tannins, good acidity and length. It is still quite young and undeveloped so is in need of some time in bottle. It might improve with time but today I don't see it as the level of the previous vintages and the animal hint makes me a little hesitant.

  • (DO) and Denominación De Origen Calificada (Doca) Are the Two Highest Categories of Quality Wine, Equivalent to the EU’S Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) Status
Spain Denominación de Origen (DO) and Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) are the two highest categories of quality wine, equivalent to the EU’s Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) status. DO Pago (Vinos de Pago) estates are a sub-classification of the DO level; Each estate guides its own production, and the legal framework adapts to fit the wine, rather than requiring the wine to fit the parameters of the DO. Wines at the DO level and above must observe standardized aging criteria. With the exception of a few regions, chiefly Rioja and Ribera del Duero which have adopted more stringent requirements, the following label definitions are consistent throughout Spain: The lower levels of quality wine—Vinos de Calidad con Indicación Geográfica (VCIG) and Vino de la Tierra (VdlT) fall within the EU’s Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) scheme. • Mogador 2010 EN.Pdf
Yohann Jousselin MS UK Sommelier of The Year 2011 2010 Ever since my first trip to Priorat, I have been fascinated by its history, wine quality and overall potential. In my opinion, Priorat is one of the most exciting wine growing areas of Spain today. It is diverse in terms of grape varieties and wine styles, yet somehow, whenever I have needed a high quality wine from this area, I always ended up choosing a Clos Mogador from René Barbier. The 2010 vintage Clos Mogador is an intense cherry red colour with purple flecks and high viscosity. On the nose, its initial aromas tend to be lovely hints of sweet dark fruit such as plum and prune followed by a touch of gaminess. After a few minutes, these aromas move towards fresher fruits, with leafy notes and a hint of black pepper. It is truly an extremely aromatic nose, which is bursting with elegance. On the palate, this wine gives us the impression of a ripe red wine with choco- late, vanilla and stewed cherries. It is a well-balanced wine, with good acidity and firm tannins. Its palate is complex with notes of cedar wood, sweet spices, vanilla and coffee aromas. After decanting this wine and leaving it to breathe for a few hours, Clos Moga- dor 2010 takes on new dimensions: it has become rounder and more aromatic with touches of sultana, blackcurrant, licorice and a lovely intense, floral note. Such purity and balance, this wine’s tannins are ripe and are starting to inte- grate well. It is a wine with ageing potential.

  • Mining Gratallops Llicorella Clos Mogador & Clos Manyetes
Mini ng grata ll llops icorella clos m ogador & clos manyetes Rene Barbier is a living legend in Priorat. His wines are part of a rare clique whose stunning qualities have become absolutely in- distinguishable from their point of origin. When drinking a Clos Mogador or Clos Manyetes, you're drinking the very land where the vines grow. Here, terroir reigns supreme over variety and over man. These are wines of intense, complex fruit, rich texture and velvety tannins, freshened by llicorella (slate) driven min- erality. Continuing a run of brilliant vintages, the 2008’s have arrived and they offer what we love about Barbier’s wines; a stony resoluteness, depth and intensity, purity and refinement (in the context of Priorat). As the tasting notes and scores below indicate, these are very special wines. By the way, if you think Priorat makes wines that are too rich for you, then you need to drink some mature Clos Mogador. With age, these wines develop the kind of elegance and deliciousness that is normally associated with the greatest mature Bordeaux or Barolo. The 08’s are particularly elegant examples of the Mo- gador style which probably signals another step in the evolu- tion of this extraordinary Estate. But more of that below Most will already be aware that René Barbier, is one yet another level of class. How much this has specifi - of the “Gratallops pioneers” behind the rebirth of cally to do with Rene Jr’s involvement we cannot be Priorat and that his Clos Mogador and Clos sure, but this highly intelligent and passionate young Manyetes are two of Spain’s greatest wines.

www.closmogador.com ALEKSEY ALEKSEEV (ALESSIO) Owner and sommelier of viniteca VINOTAG (Kiev) 2011 “Hate it or love it” –is the sensation one can experience when tasting Priorat wines. Incredible and powerful, these are feelings which surprise our imagina- tion. The best wines can last well, nevertheless there are always wines which stand out and Clos Mogador is one of these. Each harvest is capable of surpris- ing us further. Although, however much you search, you won’t be able to find a weak spot in this little marvel. You must not hurry with a Priorat. The slow process of leaving it to open can be enjoyed, at first with a lively young colour, an indication of its brilliant nature, where there are hints of forest floor, strawberries, blueberries and sweet spice that awaken a passion and compel us to enjoy each and every drop. It is virtu- ally impossible not to repeat this magnificent experience. And yet once it has been served in a wine decanter, the wine recovers its potency and power. There is no lightness here, just elegance, where the nuances of cedar, sandalwood, sweet cherries and smokiness allude to this wine’s serious side and provokes an enormous need to think about the aromas and discover all its secrets. Despite this, a few hours in the decanter are not enough for opening the doors to all the secrets hidden within this spectacular creation. The taste of this wine compliments its aromas –that hidden potency, which lingers behind its youthful exterior. Exceptional juiciness is not lost, even after many hours in the glass.
