Course Description:

This course is one of the options for the BCIT required credits. It can be taken during the freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior year.

This course will introduce students to the complex phases of and PowerPoint using . Students will receive training in word processing skills including creating, editing, and formatting documents as well as creating tables, columns, graphs, and charts.

This course will also serve to develop the students’ presentation skills using PowerPoint 2013. The student will learn to apply the features of the program to design, create, and edit professional quality presentations.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, the successful student will understand and be able to complete the following using Microsoft Word 2013:

1. Create and format documents 2. Edit documents and work with tables 3. Create reports and newsletters 4. Use advanced formatting, lists, and charts

By the end of this course, the successful student will understand and be able to complete the following using Microsoft PowerPoint 2013:

1. Create and format presentations 2. Work with lists and graphics 3. Enhance a presentation 4. Finalize a presentation 5. Work with masters, handouts, and text 6. Work with graphic objects and media Academic Honesty:

Any work submitted by the student shall be his/her own. Work taken from others shall be deemed as unacceptable. Any doubts will initiate the completion of an alternative assignment or a zero on the required effort, depending on the severity of the infraction. Class Policies and Expectations:

1. Get your folder from the file drawer and be in your seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings.

2. Please respect school property. No writing on desks, chairs, tables, or mouse pads. Also, do not tamper with any of the computer equipment at your workstation. You are responsible for the equipment at the assigned seat you are sitting in. Please notify the teacher IMMEDIATELY if anything at your workstation is damaged or has been tampered with. ​ ​ Appropriate action will be taken if you are caught destroying or damaging any school property.

3. You can be excused from class for the restroom and nurse when necessary. You must have your handbook. Please fill out your handbook, have teacher sign, sign out with date & ​ ​ time, and sign back in with the correct time. Please do not abuse this privilege.

4. No food or drinks are permitted in class.

5. Your grade in this course is based on production. Because students turn in assignments at different times (early, when due, or late) it is difficult for grades to be current. If you do not have a grade for a particular assignment, it may mean that I haven’t had the opportunity to grade and post that particular assignment. Of course, it may also mean that you are behind in your classwork. Keep your checksheets in your folder so that you can stay organized! 6. All chapter activities are to be completed following instructions given on chapter checksheets. Points will be deducted for not following specific directions given. Students work independently, with the assistance of the teacher, through the chapter exercises. At the end of each chapter, chapter activities are to be done completely by the student to ascertain understanding, comprehension, and application. 7. All assignments are to be submitted online unless otherwise noted. Please submit ​ exercises as you complete them. Do not wait until you are finished with all exercises in the chapter. You are responsible for submitting the chapter checksheet even though the documents are submitted online. This is my way of knowing that you have completed the chapter exercises. You will receive a rubric attached to your checksheet after all chapter exercises have been graded. 8. It is THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to make sure all work is current – Check Home ​ ​ Access Center (HAC) regularly! Keep in mind, as stated in #5, you may have turned the assignment in, but I have not had a chance to grade and record it. st 9. All make­up work must be completed either during study hall , before 1 ​ period or after ​ school. You must make prior arrangements with the teacher to obtain a pass.

10. Late assignments may receive only partial credit.

11. Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating on an assignment or test/quiz, or ​ ​ submitting someone else’s work as your own, YOU AND THE PERSON YOU ARE ​ ​ ​ CHEATING FROM WILL BE GIVEN A “0” FOR THE ASSIGNMENT(S) AND WILL BE ​ SUBJECT TO ADMINISTRATOR DISCIPLINE. Cheating in this class is defined as: ​ sharing passwords; submitting someone else’s work as your own; logging in to someone else’s files; copying work; and using cheat sheets. Don’t jeopardize your own grade to help out another classmate!!!!

12. All work must be saved in student’s H drive. Flash drives are not permitted to be used in ​ ​ this class.

13. Since this is a self­paced course, if you finish before the due date, you are expected to work on school­related assignments (ex. Homework, Study Island, etc.)

14. Keep your password to yourself. DO NOT give it out to anyone! If you suspect someone knows your password, please alert the teacher immediately so that your password can be changed. Your password can be changed at any time during the year.

15. You are permitted to use electronic devices to listen to music when appropriate. You are only permitted ear buds, no headphones. There is to be no texting, playing games, or other inappropriate activity.

16. The teacher reserves the right to use discretion in individual situations while adhering to the policies of Belle Vernon Area School District. Parents are welcome to request additional information by emailing [email protected]

If you have a disability that requires special accommodations, you need to notify the teacher no nd later than the 2 ​ week of class. ​ Course Grading Criteria:

All quizzes, tests, and projects will be graded according to the Belle Vernon Area School District grading policy. Total points will be accumulated for all evaluated efforts in this class rather than having letter grades per each effort. The grading scale is as follows:

A ­ 90­100 B ­ 80­89 C ­ 70­79 D ­ 60­69 F ­ 0­59

Emphasis will be on formal assessments. Therefore grades will be weighted in this course. ​ ​

Formal Assessments will account for 90% of a student’s grade (quizzes, tests, projects, ​ performance­based rubrics, essays, graded homework, etc.)

Informal Assessments will account for 10% of a student’s grade (homework for completion, ​ class participation, exit tickets, etc.)

Assignments per Quarter:

TOTAL POINTS PER QUARTER = 300 Points (approximate) ​ ​ *Assignments or assessments may vary due to pace of class and individualized instruction.

Academic Standards:

Students will be reacquainted with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards that have been adopted by the Department of Education, along with the Common Core Standards that are in the process of being implemented nationwide. Students will be made aware of the importance of the standards and the efforts to meet them. Home Access Center:

Grades will be updated automatically when they are entered by instructor but only once the due date has arrived. Please allow ample time after due date for grades to be entered.
