Burrows Submitted in fulfillment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Sussex, May 2014 3 University of Sussex Karen K. Burrows Escaping the Honeytrap: Representations and Ramifications of the Female Spy on Television Since 1965 Summary My thesis interrogates the changing nature of the espionage genre on Western television since the middle of the Cold War. It uses close textual analysis to read the progressions and regressions in the portrayal of the female spy, analyzing where her representation aligns with the achievements of the feminist movement, where it aligns with popular political culture of the time, and what happens when the two factors diverge. I ask what the female spy represents across the decades and why her image is integral to understanding the portrayal of gender on television. I explore four pairs of television shows from various eras to demonstrate the importance of the female spy to the cultural landscape.

  • Damien Hirst and the Legacy of the Sublime in Contemporary Art and Culture
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Middlesex University Research Repository 1 Damien Hirst and the Legacy of the Sublime in Contemporary Art and Culture A thesis submitted to Middlesex University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Luke White Middlesex University School of Arts and Education March 2009 Electronic copy, for upload to the Middlesex University Research Repository, March 2010. Illustrations have been removed. The author asserts his copyright over this material. For further information, please contact the author by email: [email protected] or [email protected] 2 Abstract Damien Hirst’s work, complicit as it is in a capitalist culture industry, is in need of analysis as cultural symptom. Though best understood not as avant-garde art, but as commodified culture, at its best it condenses social contradiction into complex, haunting images. In doing this it draws on a continuing tradition of the “commodified sublime” with roots in early modernity. The nachträglich returns of this in his work present an alternative history of the sublime to its high-cultural narratives. My presentation of an archive of this capitalist sublime focuses on the eighteenth century, but ranges widely, finding traces of it in sources as various as Alexander Pope and the Scriblerians, Bertolt Brecht, John Singleton Copley, James Thomson, Bruegel the Elder, Piranesi, Wordsworth, Spielberg, Mary Shelley and Zola. A starting point for my investigation is Lyotard’s “The Sublime and the Avant- Garde,” a central resource for the repeated judgments on the sublime within art-critical discussions of Hirst.

Destruction takes much less time than construction. I will not live to see the replacement trees which are planted grow to the height and stature of those that were lost. The scenery of our cities has changed forever; however, as in most tragedies, we as a people are determined to replace, restore, and adapt ourselves as survivors must. • By the Way You Dance”: an Essay on Disco and Identity Andrew Morwood
The novel Each Distant Light and “By the way you dance”: an essay on disco and identity Andrew Morwood Thesis submitted for the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of East Anglia, Department of Literature, Drama, and Creative Writing, June 2017. © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. !1 Abstract This thesis is presented in two related sections; the first (primary) section is the novel Each Distant Light, and the second, ‘“By the way you dance”: an essay on disco and identity’, is an investigation into the role of disco in the creation of a gay identity. Each Distant Light, set in 1981, follows Col, a young gay man who leaves his Northern Irish home in search of a more accepting community in New York. Over the course of one night in a dance club, memories from Col’s past overwhelm his present, increasing his sense of dislocation. Longing to belong, he’s homesick for a home he can never return to, yet is unable to find comfort in the sexual liberation of the gay scene. ‘“By the way you dance”: an essay on disco and identity’ is an exploration of the transformative effects of dance music and club culture, particularly with regards to gay men. Focusing on the disco scene of 1970s New York and Andrew Holleran’s 1978 novel Dancer from the Dance, the piece investigates the disruptive attributes of music and club spaces, their role in the development of gay liberation, and the possibilities they offer dancers in contemplation of the self.
