    The Perennial Philosophy and the Recovery of a Theophanic View of Nature Jeremy Naydler The Forgotten Tradition We suffer from a peculiar kind of cultural amnesia today. Since the time of the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution, we have increasingly lost awareness of the rich wisdom tradition that for hundreds of years nourished the inner life of contemplatives and seekers of truth. This wisdom tradition is often referred to as the philosophia perennis or ‘perennial philosophy’. In both the West and East it is articulated in manifold works of spiritual philosophy, visionary poetry and mystical literature, harboured within pagan, Judaeo-Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist worldviews, and in the oral traditions of many indigenous peoples. While it is expressed in distinctive and different ways, the perennial philosophy articulates truths that are essentially universal and timeless, which help us to understand our place in the cosmos and the deeper purpose of human life. Central to the perennial philosophy is the recognition that there is a spiritual dimension of existence that is the primary reality from which all of creation derives. All creatures seek to express in their own way this reality, and all of creation seeks ultimately to unite with it. The perennial philosophy reminds us that our fundamental orientation as human beings should be towards spirit, that we should revere the natural world as the manifestation of the divine, and that we should affirm the possibility of an ever more conscious union between ourselves and the spiritual source of existence. It is important to understand that the perennial philosophy is not a ‘philosophical system’ produced by abstract reasoning.

Within the Hindu tradition, the Gita is often read from a dualist and/or non-dualist perspective in the context of observing religious teachings and practices. In the hands of Perennial Philosophy scholars, the Gita is read from a different angle. Through a critical examination of the original works of the Perennialists, this article shows that the majority of the Perennial traditionalists read the Gita from a dualist background but that, eventually, they were convinced that the Gita’s paradigm is essentially non-dualist. In turn, this non-dualist paradigm of the Gita influences and transforms their ontological thought, from the dualist to the non-dualist view of the reality. Meanwhile, the non-traditionalist group of Perennial Philosophy scholars are not interested in this ontological discussion. They are more concerned with the question of how the Gita provides certain ways of attaining human liberation and salvation. Interestingly, both traditionalist and non-traditionalist camps are influenced by the Gita, at the same time, inserting an external understanding and interpretation into the Gita.

    FORMATION OF KARMA - During Life And After Death John Pater In one lecture one can only touch upon one view of these aspects with much being left unsaid. Rudolf Steiner, a spiritual philosopher/seer who died in 1925, gave more than a hundred lectures concerning aspects of this topic and still did not cover all areas fully. With this in mind the following will be an overview where a brief glimpse of karma will be presented . Before I begin I’d like to tell two short stories which describe the same event but in different ways. Both stories tell of the origins of the Ancient Indian civilisation. A long time ago in the ancient mythical land of Atlantis the mysteries were betrayed and the land was becoming corrupted with evil practices. The mighty leader of the Sun Oracle, the great Manu, saw this and gathered around him the most advanced human souls and, with this group of people, a great migration occurred through Northern Europe, across the top of Asia and into a region in the vicinity of the Himalayas where they were settled and could develop in isolation from other peoples. In the mean time the land of Atlantis was destroyed by mighty water and storm catastrophes because of the betrayal and misuse of spiritual powers. The great Manu, after a long period of time, passed on the leadership of his people to seven disciples. These seven disciples or teachers worked as though by magic through their wisdom of the spiritual world onto the peoples of Ancient India. Some of their teachings formed what was later written down in the Vedas.

Transcripts of the interviews, along with demographic data, vitas, researcher’s case notes, additional information obtained through follow-up phone calls and e-mails were used to glean information for themes in their discourse. Each participant mentioned a spiritual core or connection as an important component of their spirituality. Relationships were highly valued. Finding meaning in life’s joys and sorrows or assisting clients and others towards discovering meaning was another element mentioned by all. This paper, based on an in-depth analysis of Hardy’s own writings, presents his main methodological and epistemological contributions for advancing the investigation of SE. Hardy’s main epistemological propositions were as follows: the transcendent as the core of spirituality and SE as a major source of R/S beliefs; a nondogmatic approach, acknowledging that Darwinian evolution does not imply materialism and that mind is not reducible to matter; and a call for studies of psychic experiences and considering an expanded naturalism, including the “para-physical”, that could lead to a perennial philosophy and a natural theology. His methods focused on phenomenological classification and the development of a natural history of SE based on studies with proper ecological validity on the experimental and the experiential, mixing large surveys of the general population with in-depth qualitative studies of the most prominent cases.
