Many aspiring young trumpeters the world over share the same purpose: to achieve international acclaim for their art. Each trumpeter seeking such acclaim needs to adopt those skills and characteristics necessary to achieve greatness in performance and maintain a professional career. As master musicians continue to excel in their fields, their students are privileged to learn from their expertise. My career as a performer and educator has been profoundly shaped both by the teachings of my professors and the concerts of internationally acclaimed performers. Concepts of trumpet pedagogy have changed significantly since the early twentieth century. Methods have become increasingly under examination as performance demands have grown. However, there is a lack of research on the personal professional knowledge of trumpet performers. The documentation of this specialist knowledge from the artists themselves is particularly sparse. As a result, only select students have the privilege of gaining this information. In many cases successful musicians often have a small number of protégées who receive this wisdom aurally. ii!! Although a number of studies focus on specific pedagogical techniques and philosophical ideologies, few studies exist that connect innate methods of pedagogy to the careers of trumpet performers. Moreover, a body of literature that documents the cultural impact on professional and educational development in trumpet performance is lacking. This study seeks to document the professional wisdom of four successful artists so that more students and pedagogues may benefit. This research found that the stories told by professional trumpeters suggest key elements of their success. There are similarities in their pedagogical approaches and innate qualities that are vital to that success. Their teachers have had profound influence on their development. Another common element was an early involvement with music in the family. Cultural backgrounds had some influence on the various pathways to the respective professional careers, but since many professionals aim for acclaim across the globe for their performances, it is not the culture that defines an individual’s style, but the person him/herself who grows into his/her own style. ! iii!! !     JOHN MACKEY’S CONCERTO FOR SOPRANO SAX AND WIND ENSEMBLE (2007): AN ANALYSIS AND CONDUCTOR’S GUIDE TO PERFORMANCE by JACOB EDWARD WALLACE (Under the Direction of John P. Lynch) ABSTRACT John Mackey is an important young American composer. A student of Pulitzer Prize– winning American composer John Corigliano, Mackey has written works for groups ranging from small chamber ensembles to symphony orchestra. He has become, recently, an important figure in composing new works for wind band. Of these, one of his most significant works is his 2007 composition Concerto for Soprano Sax and Wind Ensemble. This document serves as a comprehensive guide to the conductor for this work. It contains a historical background about John Mackey and the piece itself, an original and comprehensive musical analysis, and pedagogical advice for performing the work from the perspective of a conductor. Its intent is to provide conductors with the necessary tools to perform the work. These include an understanding of its genesis and commissioning and perception of difficulties presented to the ensemble in performance of the work. A comprehensive analysis of the work allows the reader to see the importance of shared motives and quotations from Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto as well as understand the modern tonal language used regularly by Mackey. Appendices detail conversations between the author of the document and Mackey, extended techniques for the soloist, the composer’s notes on the piece, and a catalogue of the composer’s works for wind band. ASCONA, SWITZERLAND, 2 MAY 2017 - The Musical Weeks in Ascona, the oldest classical music festival in Ticino, celebrates a72nd edition from 4 September to 17 October 2017. The total thirteen festival concerts offered take place at three attractive venues: the Collegio Papio di Ascona church for the chamber concerts, the church of San Francesco (church of St. Francis) in Locarno for the symphonic concerts and the Sopracenerina hall for the two matinee performances in the Début Series that presents young talents on the brink of great international careers. Directed for the fifth consecutive year by Francesco Piemontesi, presentations in Ascona this year emphasise on the music world of Russia - home to great composers and acclaimed performers, celebrated above all for their expressive and virtuous qualities. A remarkable musical programme paying tribute to memorable Russian composers such as Stravinsky, Glazunov and Schnittke; the magic Concerto No. 1 for piano and orchestra by Tchaikovsky, Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky and Shostakovich’s Ninth symphony.
