Institute for Studies In American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York NEWSLETTER Volume XXXIV, No. 2 Spring 2005 Jungle Jive: Jazz was an integral element in the sound and appearance of animated cartoons produced in Race, Jazz, Hollywood from the late 1920s through the late 1950s.1 Everything from big band to free jazz and Cartoons has been featured in cartoons, either as the by soundtrack to a story or the basis for one. The studio run by the Fleischer brothers took an Daniel Goldmark unusual approach to jazz in the late 1920s and the 1930s, treating it not as background but as a musical genre deserving of recognition. Instead of using jazz idioms merely to color the musical score, their cartoons featured popular songs by prominent recording artists. Fleischer was a well- known studio in the 1920s, perhaps most famous Louis Armstrong in the jazz cartoon I’ll Be Glad When for pioneering the sing-along cartoon with the You’ re Dead, You Rascal You (Fleischer, 1932) bouncing ball in Song Car-Tunes. An added attraction to Fleischer cartoons was that Paramount Pictures, their distributor and parent company, allowed the Fleischers to use its newsreel recording facilities, where they were permitted to film famous performers scheduled to appear in Paramount shorts and films.2 Thus, a wide variety of musicians, including Ethel Merman, Rudy Vallee, the Mills Brothers, Gus Edwards, the Boswell Sisters, Cab Calloway, and Louis Armstrong, began appearing in Fleischer cartoons. This arrangement benefited both the studios and the stars.

WELCOME to FRINGE Welcome to the 9th annual Kansas City Fringe Festival! Thanks to our amazing group of over 200 volunteers we are able to produce the KC Fringe Festival — an eleven day celebration of all things art in Kansas City. The Board of Direc- tor and Committee of Operations includes more than 20 volunteers that work year round to make this Festival happen. All of these volunteers I consider family — the Fringe Family. A growing community that comes together to work, support and promote artists of all genres. Here in KC we host one of the most diverse Fringes in existence. We provide space for ANY artist of ANY genre to present their work — as long as we have room for them! The KC Fringe Festival continues to get bigger and better each year. This year the Festival presents 134 art- ists/groups performing 363 shows along with the Fruck! (That’s the Fringe Art Truck) We have developed a diverse and huge audience that continues to grow each year. KC Fringe has truly become Kansas City’s Premiere Arts Festival and is a key component of Kansas City’s grow- ing reputation as America’s Creative Crossroads. I trust that most of you know that the Fringe is an unjuried, uncensored arts Festival and therefore unpredictable! We pro- vide artists the freedom to explore and experiment, freedom to develop without predetermined outcomes, freedom to chal- lenge assumptions and freedom to take a creative leap that will shape our world in years to come. We thank our Strategic Partners — Samuel Bennett with the William T Kemper Foundation, Commerce Bank, Trustee, RareWire and VML Inc.

  • Creating a Dream for Religious Life in the 21St Century
Blessing and Hope: Creating a Dream for Religious Life in the 21st Century Donna J. Markham, OP, PhD Religious Formation Conference November 12-15, 2009 _______________ When we are dreaming alone it is only a dream. When we are dreaming with others, it is a beginning of reality. --Dom Helder Camara There is a fascinating body of psychodynamic work that has been developing since the early 1980s through the pioneering work of W. Gordon Lawrence and Mary Dluhy. It is called “social dreaming” and, in some wonderfully metaphoric and rather mysterious manner, it invites participants to activate both the power of the community and the power of the dream to create a new communal culture. While this involves a very detailed group process much too complex to explain now, I would like to share with you some of the central tenets of this creative development. You will also note that it bears some similarities to Peter Block’s work on community. In a more traditional understanding of communal culture, a community focuses its efforts along two dimensions: on its life and mission as it is experienced as a process in real time and on its life and mission as it is in the process of becoming. That is, how do we evaluate our current state of affairs and what might we surmise about how we will be in the future? To concretize this a bit, if we were to look at common ways in which we enter into chapter deliberations, financial planning or various other decision-making strategies, we typically examine how 1 things are going now and in what ways we see things developing and plan accordingly.

  • John Mackey's Concerto for Soprano Sax and Wind Ensemble
JOHN MACKEY’S CONCERTO FOR SOPRANO SAX AND WIND ENSEMBLE (2007): AN ANALYSIS AND CONDUCTOR’S GUIDE TO PERFORMANCE by JACOB EDWARD WALLACE (Under the Direction of John P. Lynch) ABSTRACT John Mackey is an important young American composer. A student of Pulitzer Prize– winning American composer John Corigliano, Mackey has written works for groups ranging from small chamber ensembles to symphony orchestra. He has become, recently, an important figure in composing new works for wind band. Of these, one of his most significant works is his 2007 composition Concerto for Soprano Sax and Wind Ensemble. This document serves as a comprehensive guide to the conductor for this work. It contains a historical background about John Mackey and the piece itself, an original and comprehensive musical analysis, and pedagogical advice for performing the work from the perspective of a conductor. Its intent is to provide conductors with the necessary tools to perform the work. These include an understanding of its genesis and commissioning and perception of difficulties presented to the ensemble in performance of the work. A comprehensive analysis of the work allows the reader to see the importance of shared motives and quotations from Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto as well as understand the modern tonal language used regularly by Mackey. Appendices detail conversations between the author of the document and Mackey, extended techniques for the soloist, the composer’s notes on the piece, and a catalogue of the composer’s works for wind band. INDEX WORDS: John
