Riker Danzig Mourns Death of Client Gia Maione Prima Riker Danzig Mourns Death of Client Gia Maione Prima We note with profound sadness the death of Gia (a/k/a JoAnn) Maione Prima. Gia Maione Prima died on September 23, 2013 in Florida at the age of 72. She was an American singer and widow of singer Louis Prima. Gia was born May 20, 1941 in Roebling, New Jersey. From the early age of 3, her sole interest was music. At age 4 she began 17 years of piano and extensive vocal training under Alma Steedman, Choir Director at Westminster Choir College at Princeton University. Upon graduation in June 1959 from Toms River High School (now known as Toms River High School South) in New Jersey, she received the National Arion Society Award in Music. With intent to attend Julliard School of Music in New York City, Gia worked at the local Howard Johnsons Restaurant to begin saving money for the tuition and to continue her vocal and piano instruction. In late 1961 it came to Gia’s attention that Louis Prima was conducting a nationwide search for a new vocalist. His tour brought him to the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where Gia auditioned on Mother’s Day 1962 and Louis immediately selected her. The next 12 years were a whirlwind of live regular performances, TV shows and recordings. Las Vegas: Sahara Hotel, Sands Hotel, Tropicana Hotel; New York: Copacabana, Basin Street East, Ben Maksiks Town and Country; Philadelphia: Palumbo’s; Chicago: Palmer House. TV Shows: Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Steve Lawrence, Art Linkletter. Recordings: 14 albums and numerous 45’s for Capitol Records, Disney Records, DeLite Label, Brunswick Records and Prima label. Louis and Gia married February 12, 1963. Their union produced two children Lena and Louis Jr. Professionally, Gia volunteered for many benefit charities and telethons and sponsored many golf tournaments to benefit charities. She was inducted in the Toms River Regional Schools Hall of Fame in 2004. She created the Louis Prima ASCAP Foundation Award and operated Prima Music, LLC, which releases previously unavailable Prima titles. The company also operates www.louisprima.com and LGL Music Publishing Co. Gia Maione Prima is predeceased by husband Louis Prima. She is survived by her two children Lena Prima Fahey, Louis Prima Jr., 2 grandchildren Anthony Jordan Prima and Jacob Prima, sister June Maione Kassel and long time companion Frank Savannah. Tulane University Louis Prima collection donated to the Tulane Hogan Jazz Archive September 24, 2015 2:30 AM Carolyn Scofield [email protected] 247-1443 He grew up playing music in New Orleans but Louis Prima"s talent as an artist and entertainer made him world-renowned. Now, artifacts belonging to the great jazz trumpeter, vocalist and composer, including films, recordings, diaries and sheet music, are coming home to the William Ransom Hogan Archive of New Orleans Jazz at Tulane University. “Prima"s iconic status as an artist and entertainer whose career spanned half a century and included hits such as "Jump, Jive an" Wail" and "Just a Gigolo â⬓ I Ain"t Got Nobody," makes this one of the most notable donations ever received by the Hogan Jazz Archive,” said Bruce Raeburn, director of Special Collections and curator of the Hogan Jazz Archive. The collection was donated by the Gia Maione Prima Foundation, Inc, founded by Prima"s wife and lead vocalist. Tulane will dedicate a Louis Prima Room to house the collection in Jones Hall in 2017. Prima is one of New Orleans" most influential musicians, bringing the sounds of the city to audiences across the globe. His style evolved through the years, from Dixieland jazz to swing to pop, even rock and roll. His legacy continues today. Generations of children know Prima"s voice as King Louie in Disney"s The Jungle Book. The Brian Setzer Orchestra won a Grammy covering Prima"s 1956 song “Jump, Jive an" Wail.” “We are excited to partner with Tulane University and be able to fulfill his late wife Gia"s dream of bringing the Louis Prima Archives to his hometown of New Orleans.

Used with permission. chapter 1 O Taming the Wildest What We've Made of Louis Prima jOHN j. PAULY For over forty years, Louis Prima had survived one change after another in the pop~ ular music business. He was, in succession, a trumpet section player in his home~ town ofNew Orleans, the front man for a popular New York City jazz quintet, and the leader of a touring big band. In the 1950s, with his career flagging, he reinvent~ ed himself as a spectacular Las Vegas lounge act, then nudged his career through the 1960s with help from his old friend, Walt Disney. He explored many forms of popular music along the way, but aspired only, in his own words, to "play pretty for the people." The same man who wrote the jazz classic "Sing, Sing, Sing," would also record easy listening instrumental music, Disney movie soundtracks, and ltalian~American novelty songs. In all these reincamations, he performed with an exuberance that inspired his Vegas nickname, "the wildest." Prima's career would end in deafening silence, however. He spent the last thirty~five months of his life in a coma, following a 197 5 operation in which doctors partially removed a benign tumor from his brain stem.

  • NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions by Ned Hémard
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Irish Mayor of New York Visits New Orleans Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, has been in the national spotlight for some time, especially since the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. Traveling back in time, another New York mayor was very much in the public eye. James J. (Jimmy) Walker (June 19, 1881 – November 18, 1946), known as “Beau James,” was the fun-loving mayor of Gotham (1926 to 1932) during part of that period known as the Roaring Twenties. This 125-pound Irish Tammany Hall politician made a trip to the Crescent City for Mardi Gras in 1928 as a guest of New Orleans’ 300-pound Irish mayor, Arthur O’Keefe. Walker packed his fancy green silk pajamas and 36 pairs of spats for his trip down South and brought with him his political savvy and Irish sense of humor. Mayor Jimmy Walker of New York It was the Jazz Age in the city that gave birth to it, and the stock market crash of 1929 was more than a year away. Reporter Gwen Bristow of the Times-Picayune was smitten: “Jimmy Walker is a darling! Slim and blue-eyed with the manners of a Continental nobleman in the movies, bringing with him four wardrobe trunks full of wearing apparel, Jimmy Walker came into New Orleans Monday night, having dashed from Gulfport at sixty miles an hour in order to be on time for the Proteus parade.” After the last flambeaux moved out of sight, the dapper mayor sighed, “New York was never like This!” Times-Picayune headline of February 21, 1928 The New Orleans press delegation was regaled with the contents of the bespoke mayor’s wardrobe trunks.

Hodges Interim Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School Original approval signatures are on file with the University of Oregon Graduate School. Degree awarded June 2018 ii © 2018 Ryan Nason iii THESIS ABSTRACT Ryan Nason Master of Arts School of Music and Dance June 2018 Title: Life in the Pits: A Trumpeter’s Life in New York’s Musical Theater Pit musicians have fallen through the cracks of musical theater scholarship. In all my research, I have yet to come across any sources that thoroughly examine musical theater from the perspective of the musicians who perform in its orchestras day in and day out. Thus, this thesis documents Richard (Dick) R. Smith’s life as a professional musician living and working—in vaudeville and on Broadway—in midcentury New York City. Smith might be relatively unknown, but he played a significant role in a variety of musical contexts. By understanding his life, we gain valuable insight into histories that have only focused on the experiences and achievements of actors, bandleaders, composers, orchestrators, and conductors, among others.
