We think her voice SUTTON T is perfect for lullabies or for soothing any audience! She embarks upon Screen Play - The perfection with Screen Play, a 19-track collection of silver screen tunes Bergman Suite that is being released in five parts. The first act includes 5 songs, “The BFM Jazz 83 Bergman Suite”, and it is rich and rewarding. “How Do You Keep the Music Playing” featuring Sutton with Alan Bergman is a definite winner as is “What Are You Doing the Rest of You Life?” Stay tuned as the saga unfolds! BRANFORD TS Composer, veteran saxophonist Branford Marsalis assembles his quartet, MARSALIS a polished unit that has worked together for over 20 years, with pianist The Secret Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner. Calderazzo does an excellent job on the “Conversation Among the Between The Ruins” before Brantford gets into the swing of it on “Snake Hip Waltz”. Shadow and The Joey is back again on “The Windup” playing with a youthful exuberance Soul that defies logic. Branford defines versatility and does so with aplomb Okeh 76 on The Secret Between The Shadow And The Soul. JENNIFER Cabaret styled singer Jennifer Roberts has a rich voice. She soars through thirteen songs matching her tone and expression to the moods ROBERTS 75 of the moment. We enjoyed “I Didn’t Know About You”, the country/ An Evening With western style on “Home” and “Travel-The Glamorous Life-Little Grey One Man Band Tb House”, the opening medley. Musical director and pianist Ted Firth delivers some unique arrangements that freshen 13 timeless classics to make An Evening With Jennifer Roberts an entertaining encounter. JIMMIE SMITH Wait a minute! This is actually a tribute album to the late, legendary Plays Jimmy B-3 master Jimmy Smith by his namesake Jimmie Smith. The young Jimmie takes on the music of the master at a concert Live In Music Smith 72 K City. Paul Brown (keyboards), Marcus Finnie (d), Hamilton Hardin Woodward Ave. T (b), James DaSilva (g) and a crisp horn section with Chris West (t-sax), Jon-Paul Frappier (t) and Chris Dunn (tb) join Smith for an electric, rockin’, soul-drenched set. The contemporary Smith and his team took on an ambitious task and did well! He makes a definitive point about In The Moment NOT being a traditional Chicken Shack B3 recording but more of a traditional bebop jazz combo. Guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Byron Landham join Pat to form the core trio with guest artists scattered throughout the set. They reshape several pop classics including “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing” and a rather fleeting take on “Crazy”. Kevin Mahogany pours his rich baritone vocals onto “I Want To Talk About You” and vibraphonist Joe Locke blends tones with Bianchi on “Fall” making this a unique and appreciable B-3 outing! Photo: Pat Bianchi Arman Raz 78 Modern 2018 Chains of Stories Israeli tenor saxophonist Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit Arman Raz waited a couple of years to release his second recording as a leader and it was worth the wait! Eyal Hai (a sax), Daniel Morton (p), Tamir Shmerling (b) and Dani Danor (d) join Raz on Chains Of Stories. There are nine mellow selections highlighted by “Two Worlds One Soul” and “Soul Talk”. The sax harmonies are rich and well coordinated. Photo:Yelena Eckemoff Colors Russian composer and pianist Yelena 78 Ballads Eckemoff teams up with drummer L&H Manu Katche for Colors, a collection 2019 of ballads and fresh mid-tempo tunes. Yelena’s music shows her strong classical roots blended with jazzy improvisation. This collection spans 80 minutes and fourteen selections, accurately depicted with various colors of the rainbow. There is great interplay between the duo and their music is refreshing, relaxing and enjoyable. Yelena Eckemoff O's Place Jazz Newsletter 25.1 Spring 2019 - Page 3 O's Place Features Claudia Acuña Turning Pages Veteran vocalist Claudia Acuña returns to the studio 77 after a 10-year hiatus and she returns with a vengeance. Ballads Delfin She sings with an abundance of confidence on Turning 2019 Pages, a collection of nine songs sung in both Spanish and English. Acuña soars on “But Beautiful” backed by a strong band including bassist Carlos Henderson, Juancho Herrera (g, vocals), pianist Pablo Vergara and drummer Yayo Serka. Gregoire Maret adds harmonica on “Aquitaine de Corazon”. Welcome back Claudia! Photo: Claudia Acuña Keith Oxman 2018 Capri Glimpses Tenor saxophonist Keith Oxman Ballads 82 expands his trio (from East Of The Village) to a quintet for Glimpses, his latest release. David Liebman (sax) and Ken Walker (b) are the new additions joining Oxman, drummer Todd Reid and Jeff Jenkins who switched from the B3 to piano. Half of the 8 selections are Oxman originals and they are fine tunes to go with three burners and a ballad. We also enjoyed the cover of “In A Sentimental Mood” and the title track that was composed by Liebman. 82 Blues Scott Ramminger S Ramminger Saxophonist, guitarist, singer and composer 2019 Scott Ramminger is dialed in on the blues for Rise Up, his latest release. He starts out reflecting on the pros and cons of romance including “88 Reasons” where his lover left Rise Up him the details on several pads of paper while consuming three pencils! Despite the blues, Scott still loves the process of falling in love, while it lasts. He transitions to the state of the union on the title track. There are eight songs in a crisp 32 minutes that present Photo: Scott Ramminger Ramminger getting his blues on. O's Place Jazz Newsletter 25.1 Spring 2019 - Page 4 O's Place Features Marshall Gilkes Always Forward Always Forward is trombonist 84 Alternate Side Marshall Gilkes’ second encounter Big Band with the WDR Big Band. He serves as 2018 composer, arranger and conductor as well. The large ensemble is flourished with reeds including Karelian Strassmayer (sax, cl, fl) and Andy Haderer (t, flugelhorn). The program has ten selections highlighted by the three-part “Denali Suite”. We enjoyed Gilkes warm tones especially on “Puddle Jumping” and the racy “Switchback” featuring Strassmayer, Paul Heller (t-sax) and drummer Hans Dekker. Marshall again strikes a winning groove with the WDE Big Band. In The Spirit Of Rasheed Ali has been evolving in Teepe’s mind for quite some time and comes to life on this release. It is accompanied by 66 pages of liner notes and photos in hardcover detailing the Teepe/Ali engagement as musicians, a special touch to the ceremonial album. Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery steps into the spotlight and shines on “Alphabet” as does guitarist Freddie Bryant on “Turnaround” along with Teepe on both songs.

PAULY For over forty years, Louis Prima had survived one change after another in the pop~ ular music business. He was, in succession, a trumpet section player in his home~ town ofNew Orleans, the front man for a popular New York City jazz quintet, and the leader of a touring big band. In the 1950s, with his career flagging, he reinvent~ ed himself as a spectacular Las Vegas lounge act, then nudged his career through the 1960s with help from his old friend, Walt Disney. He explored many forms of popular music along the way, but aspired only, in his own words, to "play pretty for the people." The same man who wrote the jazz classic "Sing, Sing, Sing," would also record easy listening instrumental music, Disney movie soundtracks, and ltalian~American novelty songs. In all these reincamations, he performed with an exuberance that inspired his Vegas nickname, "the wildest." Prima's career would end in deafening silence, however. He spent the last thirty~five months of his life in a coma, following a 197 5 operation in which doctors partially removed a benign tumor from his brain stem.

Riker Danzig Mourns Death of Client Gia Maione Prima We note with profound sadness the death of Gia (a/k/a JoAnn) Maione Prima. Gia Maione Prima died on September 23, 2013 in Florida at the age of 72. She was an American singer and widow of singer Louis Prima. Gia was born May 20, 1941 in Roebling, New Jersey. From the early age of 3, her sole interest was music. At age 4 she began 17 years of piano and extensive vocal training under Alma Steedman, Choir Director at Westminster Choir College at Princeton University. Upon graduation in June 1959 from Toms River High School (now known as Toms River High School South) in New Jersey, she received the National Arion Society Award in Music. With intent to attend Julliard School of Music in New York City, Gia worked at the local Howard Johnsons Restaurant to begin saving money for the tuition and to continue her vocal and piano instruction. In late 1961 it came to Gia’s attention that Louis Prima was conducting a nationwide search for a new vocalist. His tour brought him to the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where Gia auditioned on Mother’s Day 1962 and Louis immediately selected her. The next 12 years were a whirlwind of live regular performances, TV shows and recordings. Las Vegas: Sahara Hotel, Sands Hotel, Tropicana Hotel; New York: Copacabana, Basin Street East, Ben Maksiks Town and Country; Philadelphia: Palumbo’s; Chicago: Palmer House. TV Shows: Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Steve Lawrence, Art Linkletter.
