2017 is almost ending. If you haven’t got around to resolutions set earlier in the year, fret not. Join us for a host of exciting events happening at the libraries in November, and tick a few items off your list!

Kick off the month by picking up a new skill. Try your hand at Western Calligraphy and pen a simple quote with brush pens in Hello, Brush Calligraphy (page 19). Continue flexing those fingers withOrigami Fun! (page 18) and challenge yourself to make an origami model in 10 minutes.

Prefer a head-to-toe workout? Stimulate your mind with simple moves that you can incorporate into your daily routine in Mind Body Fitness by SACE/U3A – Brain Gym, then work up a sweat with 7 Sit-down Exercises to improve your balance and flexibility. Details on page 14.

If building wealth is one of your resolutions, check out A Beginner’s Guide to Investment to learn about the myths and facts of investing. Financial literacy is just as important as building wealth. Find out about long-term decisions that can affect your financial stability in Dollars and Sense Learning Community. Details on page 11.

Lastly, November marks Customer Appreciation Day 2017! Join us on 18 November as we celebrate your contribution and support for our libraries. Now we examine the neurons at work, it is like we are seeing the influence of Uber taxis watching the ants and the slime mould. We and how they are driving conventional taxi marvel at the swarm behaviour that, to us, companies to near panic. What do these seems to act as a whole with a single brain. companies have in common? He shows us that cities are not developed at one go. A city develops Johnson begins with the story of the slime gradually, house by house, street by street, mould. A slime mould appears like a ‘lowlife’ silently, and when the conditions are right entity not dissimilar to an amoeba. Yet when (which may include the aid of some urban scientists placed food at two of four exits planning) a giant community emerges of a maze, the slime mould was able to find before our eyes. the shortest route to the food. Unlike a city. He cites Jane Jacobs extensively in the animated film Antz, ant colonies are not support. In her book, The Death and Life of ruled or directed by a leader top-down. It is Great American Cities, Jacobs writes: “Vital true they have a queen – but she does not cities have marvellous innate abilities for rule. Her job is to lay eggs. And eventually, to teach a machine to recognise letters, we simply keep adding more and more layers The Alexandrian of ‘miniprogrammes’.

There is, of course, more to this. Johnson explains that basically, such programmes work because they get innumerable ‘feedback’ so that the ‘brain’ (machine) learns to differentiate and associate. The machine and organisms utilising the feedback mechanism avoid burnout by having an inbuilt ‘fatigue factor’. A brain that does not stop reverberating, Johnson points out, is described as being in a state of an ‘epileptic fit’. The individual units, Johnson observed, must act within rules. Johnson says that such rules are not unlike rules in games (such as Monopoly). He says, “Rules give games their structure, and without that structure, there’s no game: every move is a checkmate, and every toss of the dice lands you on Park Place.”

That brings us to the present day. We can see some possible answers to some of the questions Johnson posed 16 years ago. “Will computers become self-aware?” “Will new

Swimming in the Sink: An Episode of the Heart Author: D. Lynne Cox Publisher: New York: Vintage Books, 2016 Call No.: Adult Lending English 797.21092 COX - [REC]

The book’s title Swimming in the Sink aptly sums up the ups and downs the author experienced after a series of personal tragedies. Considered one of the world’s most accomplished open-water swimmers, Lynne Cox went from conquering treacherous waters in the English Channel, the Bering Strait, and the coast of Antarctica to splashing herself in her kitchen sink, ironically, in an attempt to get back into swimming.

Cox’s memoir offers readers a glimpse into her extraordinary life as an elite athlete who not only braved through frigid waters but also put her body through extreme pain for scientific research willingly. However, what makes her story both compelling and inspiring is her honesty and humility in recounting the darkest tide that almost engulfed her. Diagnosed with a debilitating heart condition after her parents’ death, Cox recovered with the help of medication and the unwavering support of family and friends. Told in frank and unassuming prose, Cox’s story inspires one to celebrate life in every season.

So dive in and take a dip in this engaging read!
