As we approach the end of the year, we would like to thank all of you for your steadfast support of our libraries and for keeping the love of reading alive. 19 November marks our Customer Appreciation Day, and it’s all about you. Drop by any of our libraries for exciting programmes and workshops throughout the day. Don’t be late – early birds and bookworms stand to bring home a special keepsake, while stocks last. Turn to pages 24 and 25 for a sneak preview.

Also happening this month is the Mother Tongue Language Reading Festival (page 26). Celebrating the theme Retracing Our Roots, the festival encourages everyone to reconnect with their heritage and practise reading in Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

For more multi-lingual literary delight, look no further than our SG Author Series special on children’s authors (page 10). Join four Singapore children’s authors as they share their inspiration and stories in the four national languages. Get the whole family together and enjoy fun story-related craft and games.

Lastly, make a trip to the National Library for our brand new marquee exhibition (page 45). Script & Stage: Theatre in Singapore from 50s to 80s traces the origins of playwriting and theatre production. The journey doesn’t stop there – stop by Central Public Library in the basement for Theatre Tales!, an interactive exhibition on traditional theatre in Southeast Asia, which includes wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), Chinese street opera and therukoothu (Tamil street theatre).

See you at the libraries.

His chapter “Guided by Reason” explains the two types of thinking Baggini begins by explaining what reason is – heteronomous and autonomous – and that and how it is perceived and used. At one end, reason guides us to autonomous thinking, not reason is used “merely as an appeal to the just accepting what someone tells us to be use of the intellect to think through issues” true (e.g. 1 + 1 = 2). Baggini’s exploration of the role of reason in was Baggini’s inspiration: Hume implores us morality is fascinating and illuminating. Plato, “to begin with clear and self-evident principles, and after him, Kant, held sway the view that we to advance by timorous and sure steps, to can distil morality – distinguishing good from review frequently our conclusions, and examine bad – by pure reason alone. In his chapter on accurately all their consequences; though by rational morality, Baggini shows why these these means we shall make both a slow and views are wrong. His first attack is based on the ambiguity of Searle’s statement, an ambiguity which The Alexandrian arises from two possible interpretations. The first is “I believe my need for help is a reason for me for you to help me”. The second is “I believe my need for help is a reason for you for you to help me”. The second attack is based on the fact that if Searle is right, we can see at once that with all the help that is required all around us, we cannot possibly help everyone. Therefore, “that can’t mean those reasons are sufficient to place a moral obligation on me to help them. If it did, we would have the absurdity that at any one time, we would be morally obliged to help other people meet any need they had”.

Baggini concludes by explaining why we need this ‘tough love’ called reason. In pointing out the flaws in reason, Baggini points the way to the utility of reason and the important work it can do, and how we ought to reason. He quotes David Hume, whose sceptical idea of reason

Beyond the Tea Dance: The Story of Singapore Sixties Music, Volume Two Author: Joseph C. Pereira Publisher: Singapore: Select Publishing, 2014 Call No.: Adult Lending SING English 781.64095957 PER

Tea dance sessions in the afternoons are unheard of these days. Back in the sixties though, they were all the rage, with energetic dancers strutting their stuff to the lively tunes of bands onstage.

1966, in particular, was a ‘happening’ year. Several mega local bands and solo acts such as The Quests, Thunderbirds, Wilson David and Veronica Young met with success and their slick acts dominated the local nightclub scene. The first discotheque, Gino’s A Go Go, was opened that year with DJs playing fast, danceable music to the frenzied crowd.

Beyond the Tea Dance is the third book by author Joseph Pereira on Singapore’s golden age of music in the 1960s. With lots of information and photographs of iconic music personalities of that period, music lovers will discover the vibrancy of the local music scene in the sixties; how it thrived and how it has since paved the way for the current music scene in Singapore.

Keajaiban Tiga Sunnah Nabi: Madu, Kurma & Minyak Zaitun Penulis: Dr Ahmad Mubayyad Penerbit & Tahun Penerbitan: Selangor: Pustaka Ehsan, 2014 Nombor Panggilan: A 613.2 MUB - [HEA]

Walt Disney was a man of rare talent who built an empire that continues to expand, and marvel and dazzle people of all ages. This new film gives us a look into the life of the man who was an artist and a genius, among a great many other things. The film features rare footage of his first cartoons and animations, together with scenes from some of the most popular films as well as interviews with friends and staff of Walt Disney.

Discover the time his animators and the Disney studio went on strike and how he overcame that. Did he walk away from his ‘shattered utopia’? Did he make the right decisions? Terdapat satu pertanyaan apakah muatan ilmu gastronomi Melayu? Kajian ini menggunakan sehimpunan pantun Melayu lama, National Library Presents: Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah (Munsyi Abdullah), Kitab Pengetahuan Bahasa (Raja Ali Haji), Malay Sketches (Frank Swettenham) dan Papers On Malay Subjects Life And Customs Part Ii: The Circumstances Of Malay Life The Kampong The House Furniture Dress Food (R.J.
