(2) Additional information should be provided by Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 as regards the products concerned, in particular as regards the synonyms used to indicate the products, the scientific names of the species to which the products belong and the part of the product to which the respective MRLs apply. (3) The text of footnote (1) in both Part A and Part B of Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 should be reworded, in order to avoid ambiguity and different interpretations encountered with the current wording. (4) New footnotes (3) and (4) should be inserted in Part A of Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, in order to provide additional information as regards the part of the product to which the MRLs of the products concerned apply (5) New footnote (7) should be inserted in Part A of Annex I to Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, in order to clarify that MRLs of honey are not applicable to other apiculture products due to their different chemicals character istics. -

Effect of N-Hexane Oil Extract of Two Spices on Serum Lipid Profile and Blood Glucose Concentration of Albino Rats by Ogunka-Nnoka C

U. Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nigeria Abstract - Consumers are concerned with their health and physical fitness and are seeking for alternative plant products with potential for providing nutrients with enhanced health benefits. Hence, this study investigates the effect of mixture of Ehuru (Monodora myristica) and Njasang (Ricinodendron heudelotii) oil extract on serum lipid profile and blood glucose concentration of albino rats. The spices were processed into fine flour and the oil was extracted with n-hexane as the solvent. A total of twenty five rats weighing 125-160g were separated into five groups of five each to represent control, olive oil and varying concentrations of the spices. After acclimiatization for one week, experimental administration of the extract was carried out daily for 28 days. Blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture into tubes. A portion of the blood was used for fasting blood glucose determination. Serum was separated from the other portion and used for assay of lipid profile using standard kit methods. The results obtained showed percentage fatty acid yield for Ehuru and Njasang as 79.54 and 81.0 (polyunsaturated) and 13.40 and 15.0 (monounsaturated) respectively. Fasting blood glucose assay showed that only rats in group 1 (6.46mmol/L) became significantly (p<0.05) hyperglycaemic while groups 2-4(6.03, 5.98 and 5.53mmol/L) showed a hypoglycaemic effect with respect to control (6.13mmol/L). -

(Black pepper) were tested at 30 g/L, 60 g/L and 90 g/L as well as mancozeb at 4 g/L, 8 g/L and 12 g/L concentrations against Aspergillus ochraceus in vitro. Rotted yam tubers were collected from farmers’ barns forth nightly for four times. Treatments were replicated three times and completely randomized. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Fisher’s least significance difference (LSD). Mycelial growth of A. ochraceus was inhibited by these extracts. In this study, we investigated the contamination of some meat additives (Starch, soy flour, nutmeg, cumin, black pepper and red pepper) with different mould genera and subsequently screened their contamination potential with some mycotoxins like aflatoxin and ochratoxin A. Our results declared that, 100 % of the meat additive and spices were contaminated by mould. Aspergillus was the most predominant genus, (detected in 100% of samples), which identified into six species. Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus were the most common Aspergillus species in this study. The means of aflatoxin residues in examined meat additive and spices arranged in descending manner as following: nutmeg > red pepper > soy-flour > starch > cummin > black pepper. However, ochratoxin A residues in examined meat additive and spices was ordered as following soy flour > nutmeg > starch > red pepper > cummin > black pepper. Great care should be taken during selection of the meat additives before introducing them to food commodities. Its application potential in cookie production was investigated in this study. African nutmeg (Monodora myristica) seed flour (ANM) was produced using a standard method. The flour was substituted for vanilla flavour (VFL) in ratio of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 3.5 g and functional proper- ties of the flour blends (water absorption capacity (WAC), oil absorption capacity (OAC), and bulk density) were determined, using standard methods. Cookies were developed and characterized chem- ically, physically (colour) and organoleptically using the AOAC method, a colourimeter and sensory panellists respectively. Data were analysed using ANOVA at p<0.05. Replacement of vanilla with African nutmeg had no significant effect on bulk density (0.62 g cm−3-0.68 g cm−3), but significantly affected WAC (133-142 %) and OAC (147-156 %) of flour blends. Crude protein (9.44-15.49 %), crude fat (3.17-6.50 %), total ash (2-2.73 %) and crude fibre (0.12-0.23 %) contents of the cookie increased, whilst metabolizable energy (385.33-367 kcal) decreased. -

Agbor Email: [email protected] Abstract: Oxidative stress has been reported as causative agent in certain chronic diseases. However this effect can be delayed or prevented by dietary antioxidants. Vegetables and spices are the major dietary antioxidant contributors in soups. The objective of the present study compares the antioxidant capacities of vegetable and spices used in the preparation of 13 traditional soups drawn from different regions in Nigeria. The antioxidant capacity of the soups was evaluated by measuring the Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and radical scavenging activity of vegetable and spices used in the preparation of each soup. From the results obtained it was observed that based on the individual spices antioxidant, Miyan kuka and Miyan karkashi had the highest TPC and FRAP while banga soup had the highest TFC. On the other hand, Ewedu from the Southern Region of Nigeria had the least TPC followed by Ofe Achi, while Oha had the least TFC followed by Ewedu. -
Assessment of Ginger and Black Pepper As Feed Additives on Growth Performance and Carcass Traits of Broiler Chickens

A total of 240 day old unsexed Anak-2000 broiler chicks were allotted to four treatments in a completely randomized design. Treatment 1 was the control with no additive, Treatment 2 had 0.5% ginger powder, Treatment 3 had 0.5% black pepper powder, while Treatment 4 had a mixture of 0.25% ginger and 0.25% black pepper. From the results obtained, the ginger, black pepper and their combination diets were significantly different (p<0.05) in weight gain from the control diet, with the ginger diet recording the highest value of 2299.09g per bird, as against 1821.77g per bird from the control. Average feed intake was highest in the ginger diet with 5130.14g as against the control diet that had the least with 4420.71g. The ginger and combination diets gave better feed conversion ratio of 2.23 and 2.28 respectively, which was also significantly different from the control. Mortality recorded in the control treatment was highest with 5.00% and significantly different from the other treatments. -

It is one of the important alkaloids of Pepper fruits (Family Piperaceae) and has been found to have numerous medicinal properties such as antioxidant, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, hepatoprotective, antithyroid, antitumor, antiasthmatic activity and also have significant role as fertility enhancer. The present review discusses the biosynthetic pathway, extraction process, chemistry and various analytical methods of piperine. It also describes the structural modification of piperine and its various effects on biological system. The utility of piperine as a bioenhancer for certain antibacterial- antibiotics and a potent inhibitor of drug metabolism are also discussed. Thus, review provides knowledgeable erudition on the piperine which paves way for further work. Keywords: Piperine, Bioenhancer, Biological activity, Piper nigrum. 1.
