SOLAS CONVENTION ELECTRONIC WEIGHT

DECLARATION

VERIFIED GROSS MASS (VGM) IS THE KEY

Misdeclaration of the cargo weight is a major hazard which often results in cargo claims, vessel’s structur- al damages and also poses a significant risk to the lives of the staff. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended the SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) convention under regulation 2 of chapter VI related to the declaration of the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of a packed container before loading on board of vessel within a prescribed cut-off date/time to the shipping line and/ or terminal authorities. Effective as from the 1st of July 2016, the SOLAS regulation stipulates the use of two approved methods to declare the VGM for each container by the shipper or his representative.

THE SCOPE ? All containers, loaded on board of vessel are concerned, whatever the type of container. If VGM is not communicated to our services at closing schedule, CMA CGM will not be able to load your containers.

HOW TO DEFINE YOUR VGM ?

TWO APPROVED METHODS OF WEIGHING CAN BE USED TO DECLARE THE VERIFIED GROSS MASS: . Method 1 : weighing the stuffed container Real weight of the container including tare once the cargo is packed and closed.
