Fitzroy Crossing Town summary Fitzroy Crossing is a small settlement that services local stations and acts as a stopover destination for those exploring the rugged Kimberley and its nearby attractions of Geikie Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, or those en-route to the Bungle Bungles Purnululu National Park, or Kununurra and Darwin. The current townsite has expanded recently due to mining operations 80km southeast; the growth of Aboriginal communities; and the increase in popularity of the Kimberley and Gibb River Road as tourist destinations. Fitzroy Crossing is the closest large outback town to Broome or Derby in the vast remote Kimberley wilderness, and can also be reached via the Gibb River Road at the Windjana Gorge turnoff. Distance from Perth 400km east of Broome and approximately 2,524km from Perth. Population In 2006 the population of the Fitzroy Crossing town- site was approximately 1,500 with a further 2,000 or so people living in up to 50 Aboriginal communities scattered throughout the Fitzroy Valley. Travel from Perth Car It will take approximately 27 hours to travel from Perth to Fitzroy Crossing by car, via the Great Northern Highway. It is recommended drivers allow for three days of travelling. Plane Bus Qantas and Virgin Australia both fly to Broome Greyhound provide bus services between Perth and regularly.     HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION Project Profile Great Northern Highway/North West Coastal Highway Intersection Upgrade, Port Hedland, WA Re-prioritisation of a key intersection enables free-flowing CONTRACT movement for trucks on a major freight route 41/15 - AS2124 construct only (roadworks) PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Great Northern Highway (GNH) and North West Coastal Highway (NWCH) CLIENT are the two main north-south routes between Perth and the north of Western Main Roads WA Australia. PRE-QUALIFICATION The GNH typically carries high volumes of heavy vehicle traffic between Newman R3 and Port Hedland; and the NWCH coastal route carries tourist traffic and lighter freight vehicles between Karratha and Port Hedland. TIMEFRAME Port Hedland has also taken its place as the busiest port (by tonnage) in the Jun 2016 - Nov 2016 World, as the iron ore juniors are without access to a mine-to-port rail link and use the road network as their primary transportation route. LOCATION As a result, the time taken for heavy vehicle road traffic to travel between the port Port Hedland, WA can have significant cost considerations for the iron ore juniors and the wider WA freight industry, with seemingly minor delays at intersections adding up to millions of dollars per year. PROJECT VALUE $3.6 million The configuration where the GNH intersected with the NWCH was originally a simple t-junction. This meant heavy vehicle traffic travelling north was required to stop before making a right turn from the GNH onto the NWCH to proceed northwards to Port Hedland. Works to upgrade this intersection were therefore commissioned to eliminate the old t-junction to allow heavy vehicle traffic a free-flow of movement between Newman and Port Hedland.
