Staying in a hotel just a few hundred metres from the shore of beautiful Lake Bled, we’ll take you on a guided tour of the area’s natural and cultural highlights. The itinerary includes visits to several historic towns, the vibrant capital of Ljubljana, Bled Castle, Triglav National Park and the incredibly scenic Jasna Lake. This holiday will also give you a great insight into Slovenia's culture and perhaps also their surprisingly good wine. Optional short walks of approximately 2½ miles allow you to stretch your legs and see the best of the local scenery. ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival Day Welcome to Hotel Astoria. Unpack and settle in. Day 2: Lake Bled Our base for the week is worth exploring in its own right. We’ll take a stroll directly from the hotel along the lake path, visiting Bled Castle along the way. A ride across the lake in a pletna (traditional boat) brings us to Bled Island and the Church of Assumption which has become an icon for the area. Once we’re back on the mainland, you can easily explore Bled at your own pace or visit Vintgar Gorge which is a short distance away by public transport. Day 3: Ljubljana Slovenia’s capital can easily be explored on foot and we’ll spend a full day here, visiting both the Old and New Towns as well as the Castle. The Old Town is home to many of the city's historic sights - not least the Castle and St Nicholas' Cathedral – and is connected to the New Town by a number of bridges. The New Town is home to a number of places of interest, such as the Orthodox Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the University Quarter and the striking Art Nouveau facade of the Cooperative Bank. Day 4: Triglav National Park We’ll spend some time in and around Slovenia’s National Park today. We visit Radovljica, one of the region’s best-preserved old towns where we can find out more about the Slovenian folk tradition of bee keeping. We then journey into the National Park and to Lake Bohinj; here, we can enjoy the views from the lakeside before taking a cable car to Vogel which, at 1,992m (6,306 feet), offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valley below. Day 5: Free Day On our 7-night holidays, we allow one free day where there is no organised excursion. This is an ideal opportunity for you to relax, enjoy the hotel facilities or explore the area independently. Some options for your free day might include: Wellness Centre: The hotel has a wellness centre, located on the first floor. It offers concessionary rates to guests, details of which can be found in your room. Treatments include various types of massage, manicures, facials, sauna and a plunge pool. Cycle hire: The hotel has bikes for hire. Explore the quiet side roads and farming villages around Bled. Please book this at reception. Current rates are from €4 for an hour. Land train around Lake Bled: A land train follows the lakeside path. It leaves the town every 45 minutes from late April until mid-October; however it doesn’t run in poor weather. www.hfholidays.co.uk PAGE 2 [email protected] Tel: +44(0) 20 3974 8865 Day 6: Historic Slovenia The towns of Skofja Loka, Kranj and Kropa are all wonderfully historic and today we will visit each of them on our magical ‘history’ tour! We can explore the warren of tightly-woven streets in Skofja Loka and take in the enchanting blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture in Kranj, Slovenia’s fourth-largest settlement. We also call in at Kropa, a blacksmith’s village with evidence of its metalworking past scattered for all to see. Day 7: Kranjska Gora And The Sava Valley Today we discover the Upper Sava Valley which forms the geographical border between the Julian Alps and Karavanke Mountains. We’ll discover more about the history of the area at the Russian Chapel on the Vrsic Pass before returning to spend time in the winter sports town of Kranjska Gora, pausing at the stunning Jasna Lake on the way. Later we'll visit a beautiful waterfall and the Slovenian Alpine Museum near Mojstrana. Day 8: Departure Day We hope to see you again soon. ACCOMMODATION Hotel Astoria - Julian Alps The Hotel Astoria is a compact and stylish 3-star hotel and offers a great location for our holidays, with Bled town centre, the lake shore and castle all within walking distance. The comfortable en-suite bedrooms are decorated in a contemporary style and some rooms offer balconies. Facilities at the hotel include a wellness centre with sauna and spa pool, as well as a gym and bar with out door terrace. Accommodation Info Rooms All 72 en-suite bedrooms are comfortable and furnished with all the modern amenities including: • Air conditioning • Room safe • Minibar • Telephone • Free Wi-Fi • TV Facilities Leading off the reception area there is a large and airy lounge and bar area with comfortable seating and tourist literature. To the other side the restaurant has fresh and modern decor, opening onto an attractive terrace area where guests can sit and enjoy the view with a coffee when the Café Astoria is open from 10am until 11pm. Complimentary wireless internet access is available in all public areas. There is a 24-hr reception service. The hotel has a Wellness Centre open every day from 1pm until 9pm. On one evening you can enjoy a traditional Slovenian dinner accompanied by live music. Breakfast Buffet breakfast is served from 7am and consists of a good selection of breads and pastries, fruit juices, cold hams and salami, cheeses, paté, cereals and yoghurts, as well as jams and honey, tea, coffee and cocoa. A hot selection is cooked fresh and you can enjoy eggs (including omelettes), pancakes, sausages and fried bacon. The hotel, where possible, serves local products. Lunch (Payable Locally) Packed lunches are available to order from the hotel but you can also walk just a few minutes to some local shops and purchase the ingredients for your lunch. Evening Meal The evening meal is a 4-course buffet and our guests can enjoy a special dinner on the last evening accompanied by local Slovenian music. Your Evenings Each evening your walking leaders will tell you about the choice of walks for the next day and answer any questions you may have. During the evening you may like to join in an optional organised evening activity, such as a quiz. One evening, we have arranged an evening speaker to enlighten you on the interesting history and what to look out for during your holiday in this region. TRAVEL DETAILS THE HASSLE-FREE OPTION Book your holiday ‘with flight’ and choose between Stanstead and Liverpool flights to Ljubljana airport. If you choose this option we automatically include return transfers between the airport and the hotel. The short coach transfer takes approx 30 minutes to the Hotel Astoria Bled. Marvellous panoramas, blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests are surely never to be forgotten and are one of the most fascinating tourist spots in Slovenia. The high summits of the Julian Alps, the Karavanken chain and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, open up amazing panoramas of the surrounding territory. It is hardly to find such a blooming meadows, alpine pastures and forests, elsewhere in the world within easy reach. The Julian Alps are a mountain range of the great Alps that stretches from northeastern Italy to Slovenia. They cover an estimated 4400 km², of which 1542 km² lies in Slovenia, and rise to 2,864 m at Mount Triglav, the highest peak in Slovenia. The entire mountain range constitutes about 150 mountains and is divided into two sections - the Western Julian Alps and the Eastern Julian Alps. 1 The Triglav National Park, boasting a number of peculiarities, is the largest and the earliest protected natural heritage site in the country. It is located in the north-west of Slovenia, more precisely in the Julian Alps. The park was named after the highest mountain of Slovenia, the Triglav, which is located nearly at the center of the park. It is the only National Park in Slovenia and among the earliest European parks. Pokljuka, is the southernmost highland marsh in Europe and a natural habitat of sphagnum moss. Near Kranjska Gora you can find nature reserve, the Zelenci, whom lakes provide Sava Dolinka with its source.

We will pass medieval castles, churches, and traditional mountain villages as we walk through valleys, across mountain pastures, and traverse mountain ridges with towering peaks all around us.     1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.

Pričujoči članek na osnovi podatkov v starih zemljiških evidencah obravnava območje od Bele Peči do Jesenic, ki ga je v preteklosti močno zaznamovalo rudarjenje in do danes pustilo trajni pečat. Zemlja je za osnovno kmetijsko dejavnost slabo rodovitna in najbolj primerna za živinorejo, mikroklimatske razmere pa se od ene do druge katastrske občine nekoliko razlikujejo. Klima je povsod bolj ali manj visokogorska in kmetijski pridelavi dokaj neprijazna. V preteklosti pa je tistim, ki so živeli v visokogorskih predelih območja, življenje oteževala tudi geografska odmaknjenost.
