His guiding hand and wisdom will be missed by Council, the Regions and athletes. Preparations for these 2009 WMA Lahti Stadia Championships have encountered a number of difficulties for the L.O.C. and with it, for the WMA Executive, namely: The cost of accommodation in Finland in general and Lahti in particular has been perceived to be higher than in most other parts of Europe where these Championships have been held in the past; The city of Lahti does not have sufficient available accommodation to house six thousand athletes, plus officials and accompanying persons. As a consequence, at the time of Lahti’s bid for these Championships they disclosed that additional accommodation would become available in areas distant from the city centre, including Helsinki; The L.O.C.’s commitment to a free shuttle service is limited contractually, to within the city limits. Unfortunately the city limits, it emerged, cover a very much smaller area, range and radius than what athletes have become accustomed to for previous Stadia Championships. Moreover, although the cost of accommodation outside the city limits (excluding Helsinki), is considerably cheaper than the cost of similar accommodation within the city limits, athletes do have to pay for their transportation from this outside accommodation to the stadia and back; Reservations for accommodation were held up as a result of the L.O.C. initially allocating the bulk of it’s available accommodation to tour operators representing many of the affiliates and this accommodation only became automatically released to them to the extent not sold, by tour operators in January 2009.

Coaching Association of Canada • Coaching Masters Athletes FOREWORD When I played competitive water polo, in the 1980s, there were few if any opportunities for continuing to compete past your mid-twenties. The same was true for many other sports, and masters competitors or participants were few and far between. But we’re all a few years older now, and many of us have stayed active. As a result, participation and competition by masters athletes has increased dramatically in recent years. Far from being a rarity, the masters athlete is today a common sight in many sports. National Masters and World Masters Championships are now the norm in almost every major sport, water polo included! Because significant participation in masters sport is so new, we are just starting to learn what masters athletes are physically capable of and what motivates them. Coaching masters athletes is therefore essentially a new frontier, and this booklet is the first contribution the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) is making to that new frontier. Coaching masters athletes is an exciting opportunity for all coaches to have a positive impact on the lives of adults who want to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It is also a wonderful opportunity for coaches to have a positive impact on society by encouraging more adults to be more active.

Masters Newsletter – June 15, 2021 Message from the Masters LDR Chair, Lloyd Hansen We are witnessing the rapid and much-anticipated return to road racing in the U.S. As COVID restrictions ease, successful in-person races have been held in many parts of the country, including the Gate River Run in Jacksonville, Florida, with over 8,000 runners, and the Publix Gasparilla Distance Race Classic, with a half marathon field of 4,000. Other prominent races have announced their return, including Grandma’s Marathon race weekend in Duluth, Minnesota with an expected 9,500 participants (June 17-June 19), the AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta with over 30,000 participants (July 3-4), the Boston Marathon with a field of 20,000 (October 11), and the TCS New York City Marathon with a cap of 33,000 participants (November 7). We plan to be part of this resurgence with an aggressive schedule of Masters Long Distance Running and XC Championships. 2021 Masters LDR Schedule Includes Three Spectacular Races First, the USATF Masters 12k Championships which is part of the By Hook or By Crook 12k in Sandy Hook, New Jersey on September 19. The race is along the beach on a lightning-fast course. You can also combine the race with a visit to NYC, which is only an hour away by car or ferry. Second, the 5k Masters XC event at the famed Franklin Park course in Boston. Franklin Park has been the host to hundreds of high school and collegiate championships and has been a host to the World XC Championships.

BRITISH MASTERS ATHLETIC FEDERATION President: Arthur Kimber Affiliated to: World Masters Athletics Chairman: Walter Hill European Masters Athletics Hon. Secretary: Bridget Cushen Hon. Treasurer: David Oxland, FCA, CTA Website: bmaf.org.uk President’s Address, Arthur Kimber Becoming President on the conclusion of the 2019 AGM I was expecting another busy year of competition and travel to Braga, Madeira and Toronto. Things went to plan until the end of the domestic indoor season at Lee Valley in March. The lockdown still less than six months in duration although it seems much longer, and the cancellation of fixtures, has led to using Zoom for Executive and Council meetings and serious restrictions on athletes’ opportunities to train. Runners and race walkers have generally coped well on roads and parks, but other athletes, jumpers and throwers, requiring more specialised facilities, have been seriously affected. Many athletes have made the best of a bad job, taking part in virtual races and raising money for charity. Thanks to all who organised these events and took part. Looking forward there is a chance that some fixtures may take place in the autumn, we still await a decision on the British and Irish Cross-Country International in Dublin in November, and for 2021 the dates for the usual four indoor fixtures have been fixed. In the meantime, keep training, fit and safe. Chairman’s Report, Walter Hill When I was elected in August last year I anticipated a challenge but not of the kind we have faced and will to continue to face when social distancing is still in place.
