A PEDAGOGY OF TECHNO-SOCIAL RELATIONALITY: ETHICS AND DIGITAL MULTIMODALITY IN THE COMPOSITION CLASSROOM by Kristin Ravel A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctoral of Philosophy in English at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2019 ABSTRACT A PEDAGOGY OF TECHNO-SOCIAL RELATIONALITY: ETHICS AND DIGITAL MULTIMODALITY IN THE COMPOSITION CLASSROOM by Kristin Ravel The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2019 Under the Supervision of Professor Anne Frances Wysocki I bring together the relational ethics of feminist critical theory with approaches of multimodal rhetoric to examine the ethical implications of composing on social media platforms. Most social media platforms are designed to value consumerism, efficiency, quantity of web traffic, and constant synchronous response over concerns of responsible and critical communication. I propose a rhetorical approach of techno-social relationality (TSR) as an intervention against such corporate-minded design. Through this approach, I argue that civil engagement is not limited to people’s social responsibilities but rather is entwined in complex, material-technical contexts. By considering the responsibility of our machines as much as ourselves, I lay a foundation for the multimodal writing pedagogies I would like to see implemented in composition courses. ii TABLE OF Comment: The Bottom Half of the Web There’s a reason that comments are typically put on the bottom half of the Internet. —@AvoidComments (Shane Liesegang), Twitter “Am I ugly?” This question has been asked on YouTube by dozens of young people, and hundreds of thousands of comments, ranging from supportive to insulting, have been left in response. The Web is perfect for this sort of thing, and it has been almost from the start—even if some think it alarming. Over a decade ago, some of the earliest popular exposure that the Web received was through photo- rating sites like HOTorNOT. “Am I Ugly?” videos continue this phenomenon and remain true to YouTube’s origins. YouTube was conceived, in part, as a video version of HOTorNOT. YouTube cofounder Jawed Karim was impressed with the site “because it was the first time that someone had designed a Website where anyone could upload content that everyone else could view.”1 But not only could people upload content: others could comment on that sophomoric content. And if the word sophomoric seems haughty, Mark Zuckerberg was a Harvard sophomore when he first launched Facemash, his hot-or-not site that used purloined student photos from dormitory directories, what Harvard calls “facebooks.” This uploading and evaluating of content by users is now associated with various theories and buzzwords. (I return to the question of others’ physical attractiveness in a later chapter.) Social media, like YouTube, are populated by user-generated content.

The Mika Models are Realdolls backed by big data and machine learning, able to intuit their owners sexual buttons and push them, sharing their data during nightly networked updates, so the cluster of sexbots gets "smarter" by the day. So far, so dystopian: until Mika walks into a police station carrying a bag with the severed head of her former owner. She announces that she murdered him because his masochism kink insisted that she be real, and thus capable of being hurt, and so she learned to be real, and then she killed him, because he insisted on hurting her. Now she wants a public defender. The story weaves together elements of Bacigalupi's groundbreaking debut novel The Windup Girl, and is in the tradition of Madeline Ashby's outstanding debut vN, both books about the way that gender, power, corporatism and sex will shape the ethical questions of the future.
