Box 8914 Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067, USA (DAH) *Correspondent: [email protected] Key words: California scorpionfish, days at liberty, Floy FD-94,Scorpaena guttata, tag return During the four-year period from 21 November 2002 to 24 July 2006, we performed a mark-recapture study on nearshore groundfish off southern and central California (Hanan and Curry 2012). For the study, volunteer fishermen aboard chartered commercial passen- ger fishing vessels (CPFV) caught by hook and line, 32 species of groundfish (32,366 total fish), including 2,751 California Scorpionfish, Scorpaena guttata; these fish were marked with Floy FD-94 tags and released. As of the date of the Hanan and Curry paper, 257 scor- pionfish were reported as recaptured with an average days at liberty (DAL) of 408.8 days (431.6 SD; range 2 - 2,126 days). A total of 76 (33%) of these recaptured scorpionfish were recaptured within 1 km of their original tagging site, 155 (67%) were within 5 km, and 17 (1%) were recaptured at distances of 50 km or more from the original tagging site with a range of 68 to 1,788 DAL. On 21 November 2017, a tagged California scorpionfish was reported caught by Mr. Robert Rosenberg, a recreational angler, on a one-day trip aboard the CPFV New Del Mar out of Marina Del Rey, California. -

Among the habitats, especially the coasts along Japan, the Pacific coast of the U.S.A. and coasts along Australia have many species and large production. In Japan from ancient times abalones have been used as food. Japanese, as well as American, abalones are famous for their large size. Among abalones, H. gigantea (" Madaka-awabi "), H. gigantea sieboldi (" Megai-awabi "), H. gigantea discus (" Kuro-awabi") and H. discus hannai (" Ezo-awabi") are important in commerce. Abalone is prepared as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or is cooked after cut ting it from the shell and trimming the visceral mass and then mantle fringe from the large central muscle which is then cut transversely into slices. These small steaks may be served at table as raw fresh meat (" Sashimi") or may be fried, stewed, or minced and made into chowder. A large proportion of the abalones harvested in Japan are prepared as cooked, dried and smoked products for export to China. -

Little is known however about early life history stages, such as the larval and newly settled stages of marine invertebrates. No one has captured wild larval or newly settled red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) in California even though this species supports a recreational fishery. A sampling program has been developed to capture larval (290 mm), newly settled (290–2,000 mm), and juvenile (2–20 mm) red abalone in northern California from 2007 to 2015. Plankton nets were used to capture larval abalone using depth integrated tows in nearshore rocky habitats. Newly settled abalone were collected on cobbles covered in crustose coralline algae. Larval and newly settled abalone were identified to species using shell morphology confirmed with genetic techniques using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism with two restriction enzymes. Artificial reefs were constructed of cinder blocks and sampled each year for the presence of juvenile red abalone. -

Appendix C: Species Likely to Benefit from MPAs andSpecial-Status Species This appendix contains two sections: C.1 Species likely to benefit from marine protected areas in the MLPA South Coast Study Region C.2 Special status species likely to occur in the MLPA South Coast Study Region C.1 Species Likely to Benefit From MPAs The Marine Life Protection Act requires that species likely to benefit from MPAs be identified; identification of these species will contribute to the identification of habitat areas that will support achieving the goals of the MLPA. The California Marine Life Protection Act Master Plan for Marine Protected Areas (DFG 2008) includes a broad list of species likely to benefit from protection within MPAs. The master plan also indicates that regional lists will be developed by the MLPA Master Plan Science Advisory Team (SAT) for each study region described in the master plan. A list of species likely to benefit for the MLPA South Coast Study Region (Point Conception in Santa Barbara County to the California/Mexico border in San Diego County) has been compiled and approved by the SAT. The SAT used a scoring system to develop the list of species likely to benefit. This scoring system was developed to provide a metric that is more useful when comparing species than a simple on/off the list metric. Each species was scored using “1” to indicate a criterion was met or “0” to indicate a criterion was not met. Species on the list meet the following filtering criteria: they occur in the study region, they must score a “1” for either
