What started as a devotion and search for a meaningful life of a Danish couple - not a wealthy or politically influential one, later become a path for thousands of people across the globe. Lama Ole is very honest, so I enjoyed this reading a lot. It is also amazing to read not just in this book, how the head of Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, 16th Karmapa, being forced to leave Tibet, decided the West is so important for the survival of his school. I guess he never been there and had very few disciples from Europe. The sequel of this book is "Riding the tiger" which is also great.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Introduction Buddhist Foundation Diamond Way of the Karma Kagyu Lineage Purposes and Activities The activities that carry out the purposes of Buddhist Foundation Diamond Way include the maintenance, cultivation and practice of Buddhist religion, philosophy and culture within the traditions of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. More specifically, the Foundation promotes the teaching, study and meditation practice of the Buddhist community in the Diamond Way transmission of the Karma Kagyu lineage. The Foundation will further carry this out through the purchase of land for Diamond Way practitioners as well as the general public to use for meditation retreats, Buddhist teachings, and practice. Introduction au Phowa The Drikung Kagyu Lineage is one of the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism. The founder, Kyobpa Jigten Sumgon (1143- 1217) - thought of as the second Buddha - was the successor of Phagmo Drupa who was the chief lineage holder of Gampopa (1079-1153). The Drikung Kagyu order of Tibetan Buddhism holds the precious teachings of all the yanas which Shakyamuni Buddha taught for the benefit of all sentient beings. This lineage also possesses the complete transmission of the meditative practices of the Five-Profound Paths of the Mahamudra and the Six Yogas of Naropa. The Drikung order is famous for its ability to successfully transfer the power of the Phowa meditation to initiated and devoted practitioners who practice it. Thus, the Phowa transmission given by the Drikung Lamas came to be known as the 'Drikung Phowa Ch'en-mo' - the Great Drikung Phowa. The Drikung Phowa became so powerful that it became a tradition in Tibet to have a Drikung Phowa Ch'en-mo ceremony every twelve years at Drongor Sum-dho at Drikung in central Tibet. The fame of this Phowa continued to spread as thousands of participants would experience the signs of the Phowa during the 'Lung' (Blessing Transmission) given by a head Lama of Drikung Kagyu. Due to the accumulated energy of the lineage and the blessing of the teaching itself, the qualified Lama is able to directly transfer the blessings of this practice to the pure and devoted disciples who can experience the signs very quickly. When one has received any of the signs of the Phowa meditation, then one is considered to be prepared to enter into the Buddha-field of Amitabha Buddha (Dewa-chen) at the time of death. -

Karma Kagyu, which was established in the 11th century, is one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, passing on the Vajrayana Buddhist practice known as the Diamond Way. In Karma Kagyu, the centuries-old tradition of “oral transfer” of Buddhist practices is highly VLADIMÍR WEISS/THE PRAGUE POST treasured. Particularly important is the teacher and disciple relationship. A convert to Buddhism, Nydahl has become one of the West's foremost spokespersons for Vajrayana, the Diamond Way. The word karmapa means “holder of Buddhist activity,” and his followers enlarge believe the current Karmapa is in his 17th conscious human incarnation. The 24-year-old Karmapa was accompanied by Lama Ole Nydahl, a Danish convert to Buddhism who has helped make the Diamond Way the largest and fastest-growing school of Buddhism in the West. After meeting the 16th Karmapa in Tibet in 1969, Nydahl studied for 12 years, became a lama and is now constantly on the road, spreading Buddhist philosophy throughout Europe, the United States, Latin America and Asia. He is known for being able to interpret and explain Buddhist practices in a manner well-suited to modern Western thinking. -

In contrast, Ole Nydahl’s convert lay Karma Kagyu Buddhist movement, the Diamond Way, has drawn attention for its apparently hedonistic style. This article addresses the wider issues of continuity and change during the transition of Tibetan Buddhism from Asia to the West. It analyses views on and performances of gender, sexual ethics and sexualities both diachronically through textual-historical source and discourse analysis and synchronically through qualitative ethnography. In this way the article demonstrates how the approaches of contemporary gender and sexualities studies can serve as a way to question the Diamond Way Buddhism’s location in the ‘tradition vs modernity’ debate. Nydahl’s pre-modern gender stereotyping, the hetero-machismo of the Diamond Way and the mildly homophobic tone and content of Nydahl’s teaching are interpreted in light of Indian and Tibetan Buddhist sexual ethics and traditional Tibetan cultural attitudes on sexualities. By excavating the emic genealogy of Nydahl’s teachings, the article suggests that Nydahl’s and the Diamond Way’s view on and performance of gender and sexualities are consistent with his propagation of convert Buddhist neo- orthodoxy. The Karmapa controversy A compilation of information 1 Foreword This work fills a requirement: to provide all meaningful information for a good understanding about the Karmapa controversy which, since 1992, shakes up the Karma Kagyu lineage. While web surfing, one can notice the huge information unbalance between the two differing sides: on Situ Rinpoche's side, there is plenty of documentation, while that on Shamar Rinpoche's side is sparse. On Situ Rinpoche's side, many websites give out information, with some, dedicated to this task, having almost daily updates. By comparison, Shamar Rinpoche side does not even provide the minimum information sufficient to understand its point of view. Now, complete information easily found is essential for everyone to make up one's opinion. To limit oneself to only one version of the facts does not allow for a full understanding and leads to all extremes, which we have sorely witnessed since 1992. Studying this controversy, one is surprised by the distressing level of disinformation and ignorance surrounding it. Few people know truly the circumstances and the unfolding of all these events which profoundly shook our lineage. Most contented themselves with adopting the view point of their entourage, siding either way, bringing up real quarrels and polemics between disciples of the same masters. It even came up to murders and monasteries attacks ! And yet, without going for any debate or confrontation, simply acquainting oneself with information provided by each side, allows us to stand back, to grasp the ins and outs in a more objective way and finally to reach a valid opinion in this matter. -

Practices for others while they are dying after death (excerpted from the Pema Kilaya Death and Dying Project website, pkdeathanddying.org 3-15-17) Practices for others while they are dying Buddhist Practitioners in the Dissolution Stages The outer dissolution stages can be dramatic and disorienting, especially if one hasn’t studied them and is unprepared. If you recognize that the person you are attending is passing through these stages, be as encouraging as possible, informing them that their consciousness is passing up through the central channel (uma), lightly touching the hair at the crown of the head, drawing attention to the crown chakra at the top of the central channel, bringing an “energy up” orientation to them. This is also a time when you can do phowa for them. Phowa The “Hook of Compassion Phowa” is done for others who are dying or who have already died. It is particularly effective to do this practice in a group. Before you begin, be sure to get some confirmation that the person is dying, either from a doctor or from recognizing the signs of death (such as the appearance and behavior of the person, including the outer dissolutions). Hook of Compassion Phowa is based on the Nirmanakaya Phowa you practice on yourself. The same visualization is used except that you visualize the person dying and yourself simultaneously: You simultaneously raise and eject the red syllable Hri–yours and that of the dying person–and both merge with Amitabha overhead. There is no need to do the Amitayus visualization and prayer afterwards. -
The Europe Center Project Was Born
The september 2008 september Europe Center „This would be a place where many cultures will cross in a Buddhist setting, where many people will learn from each other, where a lot of fertile minds, a lot of sharp people, a lot of very idealistic people will be able to influence each other, fall in love privately and just really grow as human beings and share with others at the same time.” Lama Ole Nydahl Everything began in the early 70’s when the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa asked Hannah and Ole Nydahl to teach Diamond Way Buddhism in the West. The first groups and centers appeared and grew into many, then about 10 years ago the idea emerged to buy land in the middle of Europe, to hold courses and ensure the transmission of the line- age. The idea caught the imagination of not only the European Centers but those worldwide – the Europe Center project was born. Eight years of looking for the right place has brought the best imaginable result: our own land in the foothills of the Alps at an altitude of 850 m above sea level. We are fulfilling several functions of a regular center and some others too. There will not only be meditation programs, but also in- ternational courses, various workshops with people like center representatives, traveling teachers, board of trustees, and a huge inter- national library. The search went on for eight years, in that time many potential places where found, however nothing re- ally fit until the day the Hochreute was found in January 2007. -

Buddhists from all over the world bid farewell in Germany to one of the highest teachers of Tibetan Buddhism Farewell ceremony in the village of Renchen in the Black Forest / 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyu tradition, comes to Germany in order to accompany the body of his teacher to India ! Germany, 20 June 2014. Several thousand Buddhists from all over the world met at Renchen in Germany to pay their last respects to His Holiness the 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje led the impressive farewell ceremony for his teacher. He will accompany Shamar Rinpoche on his last journey to India and several other Asian countries. Tens of thousands of Buddhists will bid him farewell there. Shamar Rinpoche himself did not fear death. In one of his last teachings he said: ”You don’t need to be afraid of death if you know how to practice [meditation] in death.” ! Shamar Rinpoche died of a cardiac arrest on 11th June, at the age of 61 in the meditation center of his Bodhi Path organization in Renchen-Ulm. Shamar Rinpoche was, after Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the highest-ranking teacher in the Karma Kagyu tradition and one of the most important and influential representatives of Tibetan Buddhism. He taught worldwide and established various humanitarian foundations in Europe, the USA and Asia. ! After his death, letters of condolence were received from many high masters of Tibetan Buddhism as well as the Royal Family of the Kingdom of Bhutan.
