"OuT oF EGYPT HAvE I CALLED MY SoN" OLLOWING the general idea that the civilization of Hellas had F been inspired and developed in preparation for the work of the Westerl} Avatar, it was suggested, in the meeting of the Branch whose debates have been in part recorded, that other sides of Grecian genius, such as the peerless purity of the Parthenon, or the great dramas of JEschylus and Sophocles, might illustrate this inspiration, not less than the mystical philosophers like Pythagoras and Plato. An admirable illustration was drawn from the great trilogy of Sophocles, the three dramas in which the tragedy of the house of CEdipus is unfolded. Just as the three parts of Dante's great trilogy, the Inferno, the Purgatorio, the Paradiso, mark the three great stages of the spiritual way: disobedience, penitence, bliss; so, it was said, the three dramas of Sophocles mark the three great epochs of defiance to the divine will, the suffering which leads to resignation and acceptance, and, thirdly, a perfectly consecrated obedience, even in the face of death. The theme of the CEdipus trilogy is contained, it was said, in the closing words : Man's highest blessedness, In wisdom chiefly stands; And in the things that touch upon the gods, 'Tis best in word or deed To shun unholy pride; Great words of boasting bring great punishments, And so to grey-haired age Teach wisdom at the last. To put it in another way, the point was, that this old Athenian play teaches a characteristically Christian lesson : purification through suffering. The trilogy begins with the defiance of the gods by the parents of 2 THEOSOPHICAL QUARTERLY ffidipus, and the consequent sin of ffidipus and Jocasta, begun in ignor­ ance and continued in defiance which mocked the divine powers : Now, oracles of gods, Where are ye now . "Ha ! ha ! why now, my queen, should we regard The Pythian hearth oracular, or birds In mid-air crying ?" At the moment of apparent triumph, ffidipus exultant exclaims that the oracles are overwhelmed in Hades. Jocasta answers : Why should we fear, when Chance rules everything ; And foresight of the future there is none ; 'Tis best to live at random, as one can. But the blow of the gods falls, and, at the end of the first play, ffidipus wanders forth, blind and a beggar, over the earth, accompanied by Anti­ gone his daughter. The second play of the trilogy, • (Ediptts at C olonus1 the action of which is laid several years later. Notice the growth of the soul of the blind and exiled king, who has passed from defiance to resignation and acceptance. ffidipus thus makes confession of his faith : I have learnt contentment ; chance and change Have taught me this, and the long course of time, And the stout heart within me. Besides contentment, he has learned reverence : I am come, as sacred, fearing God. Acceptance and reverence make it possible for ffidipus to become an agent for the divine powers. The second play closes in mystery. ffidipus, about to die, enters a sacred grove. There, holy ones meet him, and he is "changed" ; he does not die the death of all mankind . Antigone} the last of the three dramas, depicts a mortal completely obeying the divine will, though that obedience brings disgrace and death. Creon, the self-righteous ruler, has issued an edict, which commands the violation of a sacred duty, universally accepted throughout Greece. Antigone refuses to obey the edict, though she knows that destruction will be the result of her disobedience. Creon asks : Thou didst dare to disobey these laws ? Antigone answers : Yes, for it was not Zeus who gave them forth, Nor Justice, dwelling with the gods below, Who traced these laws for all the sons of men ; Nor did I deem thy edicts strong enough, That thou, a mortal man, should'st over-pass The unwritten laws of God that know not change.     Recent Publications Bible Journal’s Shroud-bashing... ‘Simply historical ignorance’ is U.S. art expert’s verdict on sindonologists’ arguments for the Shroud’s authenticity The excellent American Biblical journal Biblical Archaeology Review in its July/August 1998 issue gave what editor Hershel Shanks clearly regarded as a fair and balanced summary of the latest state of play on the Shroud controversy. However this prompted two articles (published in the Review’s November/December 1998 issue) strongly objecting. The first of these was from Gary Vikan, director of the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and adjunct professor of art at Johns Hopkins University (as apparently a regular lecturer on ‘Pilgrimage to Graceland: The Cult of St.Elvis’, clearly no shrinking violet when looking for a headline-grabbing topic). According to Vikan, for whom the carbon dating enables us to be ‘positive’ that the Shroud ‘could not possibly have come into contact with the historical Jesus’, one of the most important points to be understood about the Shroud is that it ‘is not and never was a ‘work of art’ in the conventional sense of that term…’ As Vikan goes on: ‘This is the catch-22 that sindonologists fail to appreciate. For the shroud to be the shroud, it more or less has to look the way it looks. Furthermore the shroud is in no way unique in appearance among its object type [‘at least three dozen [acheiropoietos] cloths [that] have been identified as Veronica’s Veil, the Holy Shroud and the like’] The single salient quality that these sacred objects share is that very quality that is so striking about the shroud – namely a faint and elusive image seemingly produced by bodily secretions.’ For how people of the Middle Ages acquired the knowledge of crucifixion exhibited on the Shroud, Vikan identifies as culprits the mediaeval ‘penitentes’ - religious given to extremes of self-mortification, particularly during Holy Week.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST AS A "SIGN COMMANDMENT" AND "ANTI-SABBATH" IN THE WORSHIP CRISIS OF REVELATION 12-14 ANTHONYMACPHERSON Perth, Australia Explaining the "mark of the beast" (Rev 13:16; 14:9) has proven an elusive and difficult challenge to commentators. Some of the more popular futurist interpretations claim that John foresaw a future society where computer chips are literally placed in one's right hand or forehead.' This extremely literal approach attracts few scholars. Many scholars restrict their commentary on the mark to surveying, without necessarily affirrmng, the different suggestions, and instead offer largely spiritual interpretati~ns.~Revelation suggests the mark is quite concrete and knowable. It is enforced on the earth's inhabitants; people can readily identify it and consequently accept it or reject it; whether one does or not is the difference between life and death. Pnterism and the Mark $the Beast Preterist interpreters seek to ground any fulfillment of Revelation in events in the history of the fust or second century A.D. Such attempts have proven unsuccessful. Edwin A.     1 Fictional Jews at the End of Time: Conversion Narratives and Jewish Suffering in Evangelical Apocalyptic Novels A Paper Presented at the Association of Jewish Libraries Annual Convention Seattle, WA July 5, 2010 Mark Stover San Diego State University Abstract This paper analyzes contemporary evangelical apocalyptic fiction with respect to the portrayal of Jews and Judaism. It examines thirty-eight novels published in the United States between 1991 and 2008. The author concludes that these novels, which include themes of Christian triumphalism, conversion to Christianity, and horrific Jewish suffering in the final days of mankind on earth, are consistent with the theological principles of evangelical premillenial dispensationalism in that Jews are seen as apocalyptic agents both in suffering as well as in conversion. A list of the novels examined is appended. Introduction The popularity of Tim LaHaye’s and Jerry Jenkins’ twelve part series on the rapture and ensuing Tribulation period has shed new light for many non-evangelicals on the world of dispensational fundamentalism and its “end times” scenarios based on the book of Revelation.1 Born in the 19th century and raised to maturity in the early 20th 2 century with the advent of the Scofield Reference Bible, dispensational premillennialism teaches, among other things, that the true church will be caught up to heaven and the rest of humanity will be left on earth to undergo seven years of “tribulation” before the Second Coming of Christ.2 The Apocalypse of John in the New Testament, otherwise known as the Book of Revelation, with its imagery and stark division between good and evil, has long been a favorite subject of novelists, playwrights, and other storytellers,3 and evangelical writers are no exception.
