Cutting edge and today is Jeans for Genes Day. Because I had to say that and I'm not going to need to spell it. Jeans as in things you wear on your legs for Genes as in the things that are in your body. Jeans for Genes is a long-term fundraising awareness campaign has done terrific work bringing focus to the work of the Children's Medical Research Institute. So, we thought we'd go right to the top. Professor Roger Reddel is joining us. He's the director of the CMRI and the Sir Lorimer Dods Professor, at the Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney. He's been an illustrious doctor and medical researcher, done extraordinary work and it's great to have him in Roger Reddel. Hello. RR: Hello, James. Nice to be here. JV: Nice to see you. And like to remind us again, what's what's going on is the Children's Medical Research Institute get up to? RR: Well, as you said, Jeans for Genes Day today we're celebrating all of the work that we do in genetic research. The the institute specialises in four main areas that includes embryology and birth defects. Gene therapy, which I'm sure we'll talk about in cancer and also aspects of neuroscience, right epilepsy and diseases like that RR: Been in place for 60 years. -

Medical History, 1999, 43: 155-172 Biomedical Communication and the Reaction to the Queensland Childhood Lead Poisoning Cases Elsewhere in the World JOHN C BURNHAM* Beginning in the 1890s, physicians in Queensland began reporting cases of lead poisoning in children. Lead poisoning up until that time-and for a long time after-was primarily an occupational disease, and the appearance of plumbism in children was therefore unusual, to say the least. As John Thearle has pointed out, the specific local events that brought Queensland physicians to interest themselves in the subject of lead poisoning in children constitute a striking incident in the history of medicine. Beyond that story, however, is what happened to the published reports of those physicians in the history of world medicine.1 The Queensland experience suggests not only dimensions of the history of lead poisoning in children but shows how biomedical knowledge was-and was not- communicated. Citation studies of biomedical publications confirm impressionistic evidence that writers in the medical literature tended to cite work from their own national medical publications, rather than using, in an even-handed way, what was available in the world.2 It is in this context of cultural provincialism that the fate of the reports from * John C Bumham, Departments of History and of 1987. Babies and Bacteria: Phage Typing, Bacteriologists, and the Birth of Infection Control KATHRYN HILLIER summary: During the 1950s, Staphylococcus aureus became a major source of hos- pital infections and death, particularly in neonates. This situation was further complicated by the fact that Staphylococcus quickly gained resistance to most anti- biotics. Controlling these infections was a pressing concern for hospital workers, especially bacteriologists who tackled it through the use of a new epidemiologic tool: phage typing. This article argues that during the mid- to late 1950s a series of staphylococcal hospital and nursery epidemics united phage typers, brought international recognition to the usefulness of their technique, and, in the process, contributed to the establishment of the new field of infection control. Through the use of this new tool, phage typers established themselves as experts in infection control and, in some places, became essential members of newly formed infection- control committees. The nursery epidemics represent a particularly important test for phage typing and infection control, for this staphylococcal strain (80/81) was especially virulent and spread rapidly beyond the hospital to the wider community. Chapter 5 Research institutes, foundations and benefactions Yvonne Cossart Foundations and benefactors Over its 150 year history, many benefactors have supported medical research in the Faculty, both as individuals and by contributions to the named foundations. In some instances their names are linked to specific grants and awards, providing opportunities for new lines of investigation and for the training of young medical scientists to work in specific areas of medical research. No history of the Faculty can be complete without credit being given to those who have raised or donated vital resources to help the Faculty grow. With its foundations, the Faculty now benefits from a capital fund of more than $150 million in endowments, bequests and scholarship funds, too numerous to list individually. They vary from the profoundly impactful, such as the Bosch Bequest that allowed the formation of the first four research chairs in the Faculty (see Chapter 4), to some with terms so tightly worded that the Faculty has had great difficulty in adhering to the donor’s wishes. Important foundations, bequests and major fund raising efforts are listed to show the development of this aspect of support for the Faculty’s efforts. The Faculty is very fortunate that the funding available as interest from bequests and donations now amounts to around $3 million. It has been a key factor in strengthening research in the Faculty overall and in attracting larger scale funding from government. For almost 50 years, the Medical Foundation has facilitated major new initiatives both on campus and in the clinical schools. Its story and that of some of the 12 other foundations which are focused on individual diseases or patient groups are told in this chapter. -

Chapter 9 From sandstone to stainless steel Richmond Jeremy The Faculty’s buildings The growth of the Faculty of Medicine is reflected in the buildings which accommodate its activities. When most people think of the Faculty, their first image is of the Anderson Stuart Building. This sandstone masterpiece was certainly the focus of the Faculty during its first century, but in the last 50 years that focus has shifted. This shift has been most marked in the last 25 years, with the rise of the clinical schools and affiliated research institutes. This chapter records the role of the Faculty’s buildings in research and teaching, at both the University campus at Camperdown and the clinical schools. The University’s Camperdown Campus The Anderson Stuart Building The Old Medical School (now known as the Anderson Stuart Building) was constructed in several stages. The centre of the building with the east front and tower was constructed between 1884 and 1889 at a cost in excess of £60,000. Extensions on the north side were constructed in 1909–1912 and the north entrance was completed in 1922. The history of the construction of the Anderson Stuart Building and its architectural features have been described in detail by James Kerr in the Faculty’s Centenary Book. The building was designed with large lecture theatres and spacious demonstration rooms, but, as the Faculty grew, the pressure on space within the Medical School building became ever more intense. In 1916 the Dean Anderson Stuart, lobbied the University for further extensions of the building to both the Anderson Stuart’s dream south and to the west, in addition to the north. -

Emeritus Professor Sir Lorimer Fenton Dods The degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) was conferred upon Emeritus Professor Sir Lorimer Fenton Dods by the Chancellor Sir Hermann Black at a ceremony on 25 May 1974. Report The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor William O'Neil, gave the presentation address. Lorimer Fenton Dods, a graduate of this University, has played a distinguished and varying role in medicine but especially in paediatrics in Australia. As a general practitioner, Sir Lorimer took an increasing interest in the health of children and in the treatment of their diseases, and was soon specialising in this field both at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children and as a part-time tutor at this university. After war service in the Middle East and New Guinea, Sir Lorimer was in 1949 appointed to a new chair of Child Health. In his presentation address, Professor O'Neil outlined several aspects of Sir Lorimer's career, including the following observation: "Three things have struck me in what I have read of his long list of publications. First a concern in curing or at least alleviating human diseases. Second, a concern with understanding the causes and courses of human distress, this is where the scientist in him is clearest. Third, a deep humane sympathy with the human sufferer in illness. His fund raising efforts through the Children's Medical Foundation is a practical expression of all three concerns."
