SYNOPSIS

In 2013 our founding donor, the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, made a grant of R300,000 to the Casterbridge Music Development Academy (CMDA). This was supported by other substantial grants, the largest of which came from The Dell Development Fund of 27 Computers and R500,000 to assist us with the development of our 2Enable platform. Again, we have been supported on an ongoing basis by Douglasdale Dairy and Seasons in Africa who have made monthly contributions; and the RMB Fund, The MacKenzie Foundation, HCI Foundation, Fintax and several private contributors who have made either once off or recurring donations.

This year we had two flagship events; Ilizwi, a musical written and directed by Ingrid Wylde and our inaugural Route 40 Music Festival.

Ilizwi, with a cast of over 40, most of whom were from our KaBokweni and Zwelisha hubs, was an exceptional production that ended up touring to Cape Town and performing at the Nedbank Arena World Economic Forum delegates. We are grateful to Vuyo Jack, HCI Foundation and a number of generous private individuals for funding this tour.

At the Route 40 we had many well-known South African bands and artists perform alongside our youth bands as well as international guest musicians. We were fortunate to have had Carnegie Hall and The Rock Scholarship Fund in the USA run a song-writing competition across 300 rock schools in America. The top 6 finalists were flown out to participate alongside our youth bands at the Festival. Coca-Cola Fortune and SAB were the main sponsors of the event and many local organisations contributed accommodation, meals and transport.

A significant donation in the form of rent relief by the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre and Louis van der Merwe in particular makes it possible for the program to operate from the current premises at the Performing Arts Centre.

In 2013, the CMDA continued to deliver its music program through its existing hub structures. 2Enable, the application we have developed to manage our program and deliver educational content to our users went live at the end of April. We are now able to better track the utilisation of our program and we have managed to deliver over 3000 assessments to users on the platform and have tracked over 2300 contact sessions with our members that include band development, coaching and attendance at our hubs.

We continue to rely on a very small management team, our music coaches, hub managers and circuit coordinator, in addition to the many volunteers and community members who help us to function effectively. It is a program that has captured the hearts and minds of many people and again, we wish to thank everyone, especially corporate and private donors, for their ongoing support.

Our contribution to the local community was recognised by the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism at their annual awards event where the CMDA was announced the recipient of the Kruger Lowveld Community Service Award for 2013.

This report will detail the progress made in 2013 and our plans and requirements for 2014.

Christopher Amos - We cannot thank you enough for being such a great collaborator on this project (Song writing Contest and Route 40 Music Festival). I think the results were even more powerful than we all had expected—for both the students and the staff involved—and it was incredibly exciting to see so many months of planning come to fruition in such a successful festival.

I cannot praise the CMDA students enough for how open and welcoming they were to their American counterparts. It is a huge credit to their character and the values that you’ve instilled in all the students studying at CMDA that the musical collaborations were so successful and that all the students spent so much time getting to know one another and enjoying their time together. I know it was an unforgettable and life-changing experience for all the American students.

Director, Education Media & Technology The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall

Christine Belinda - Beautiful! As a parent of one of the American songwriters, I cannot even begin to put into words my appreciation to all parties involved, especially the host CMDA. The collaborations between the Carnegie Music Exchange students (The Weill Music Institute) and The Rock School Scholarship Foundation and CMDA has empowered many young musicians with knowledge, skill, friendship, and deep appreciation for one of the most joyous experiences of their lives. They were all transformed in ways that will continuously contribute to the arts and to the beauty of life. Even those of us who could not attend or travel to were given incredible gifts by all you amazing, amazing people! We continue to unravel all that Anna Pearl has experienced. We are forever grateful to all of you for taking such good care of her and offering such an incredible life changing experience. THANK YOU ALL!

We wish to thank all our donors, employees, friends and supporters for their valued contribution to the success of our program. We know that we are making a positive impact in the communities in which we operate and especially to those members who have actively participated in our program. In 2013 have plans to both diversify what we offer and to dramatically increase our reach.

FACILITIES

We continue to operate out of 3 hubs based in White River, KaBokweni and Zwelisha. The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) grant (from our application submitted in 2011) was not confirmed and our plans to open new hubs were put on hold. As of January 2014, we understand that our application has been approved and is in the ‘legal department’, and when processed, we will be opening at least two new major hubs in underserved areas. Each will include a Dell Computer Network and a combination of acoustic and electric music equipment. We will now be focusing on developing joint facilities where we partner with several stakeholders to create community centres where our facilities represent a portion of what is on offer to the community.

In 2013 the Zwelisha hub has been the most successful. We have developed several bands and the members in this hub have been actively engaged on the 2Enable platform completing music theory, guitar and recorder courses.

The KaBokweni hub in 2013 had to be restructured. The hub was based at the Alliance Church and our equipment was continually being damaged through electrical surges. Several items were damaged beyond repair and the remaining functional equipment was returned to the White River hub and is being used for band development. A new facility was established as a ‘private enterprise’. Here we have set up a computer network to deliver 2Enable and have based all of our Marimba’s in this hub. In 2014, we will be meeting with Mbombela to establish this hub in a community centre to make it more accessible. The NLDTF grant will also fund the costs of a full time hub manager who will manage the music and educational programs.

The White River hub continued to grow from strength to strength. Many members in White River are already competent musicians and although several members made use of music lessons, the greatest output from this hub were functional bands and were involved with Aggi in his Band Development program.

MAJOR PROGRAM ACHIEVEMENTS

2013 has been a busy year on many levels, but there are five noteworthy achievements worth mentioning: Ilizwi, our musical; the many public performances; the Orchestra; our management and educational platform called 2Enable; and the Route 40 Music Festival.

ILIZWI

Ilizwi, described below, was performed eight times in Mpumalanga and once in Cape Town to the delegates of the World Economic Forum. The cast started out at with over forty members of the CMDA nearly all of whom live in underserved areas of Mpumalanga. We were pleased to have Zanika Mehta, a member of the CMDA, compose the music for two of the songs featured in the production. This project was funded by the NAC.

ABOUT ILIZWI ILIZWI is a musical about the passions we have, what drives us to do what we love doing. It is about people who play and sing and are motivated by love of music. Their lives are poorer when those passions cannot be realised. It is about those who work hard simply to survive, about the men and women who labour to build this country, especially the miners deep in the belly of the earth, and the dangers that job brings. It is about really loving someone, not being blinded by money or status. It is about being true to your feelings and passions.

Acclaimed Director and Writer Ingrid Wylde and Empowerdex’s Vuyo Jack, lover of Jazz and singer himself combined their talents to create ILIZWI. Using the rich history of South African Jazz songs as a starting point, a musical was created set in the 1950’s/60’s in Meadowlands in Soweto. Music is life, and Jazz was woven into the tapestry of everyday life in the history of music in South Africa.

We at the CMDA were honoured to be part of this production and wish to thank both Ingrid and Vuyo for the opportunity. This project made a lasting impression on the many CMDA members and staff that participated. Attached is our May Newsletter that provides more detail on Ilizwi and the performances.

To:cmda and the ilizwi's production team mostly mrs ingrid wylde(director) thank you very much 4 everything and mostly 4 believing in us.A wise man once said;"it takes a village to raise a child",indeed what would we do without CMDA..on our trip to Cape Town(early may 2013) which i found very adventurerous and inspering, though our stay was short i really enjoyed everything about our stay from the air plane(which made me feel dizzy 4 the first few menutes the time it went up)to the fancy hotel at Holloy on the squre(excellant service) to the little tour we did also and thats going to the Table Mountain(which was declared one of the new 7 wonders of nature) the beach and saw the penguins, and also we went to the slave lodge museum(which i found exciting becouse we learnt abt the sad history of slaves our country n beyond.we also performed 4 the world economic forum n also went to the theatre of which sort of made us up our game a bit.thank u ilizwi crew nd CMDA U R the bst GOD bless u!!..

THE LOWVELD COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA

The Lowveld Community Orchestra (LCO) was created after a visit to the Lowveld by a community orchestra from Remscheid in Germany. This tour planted the idea of creating and supporting a community orchestra in which the CMDA could include its members. With the support of Anneke Coetzer and Lorraine Kirk, the orchestra was established and boasts having over 50 musicians aged from 12 to 60.

The CMDA funds the costs of the conductor and the travel costs of the brass section from Pienaar and a string section from Lydenburg. The orchestra is a valuable CMDA initiative as it embodies everything the CMDA is trying to achieve. It includes members from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and ages, all of whom participate in an activity that is enriching for the community as a whole. In 2013, the orchestra had four public performances:

 The Uplands Festival - the LCO performed at the opening of the Uplands College new drama and music buildings, and actually opened the Festival itself.  The orchestra performed for the 2nd time ever at the antiques fair at Umbali near Barberton.  Trio Mundi, a trio of musicians from the USA, performed with the LCO at a very special afternoon recital at the PAC. The orchestra and guest musicians filled the centre of the PAC auditorium, and the audience watched from the stage, sides and from above. The ambience was magical and the audience was delighted with this rare treat of an international act performing with our very own home-grown orchestra.  At the orchestra’s sold-out year-end function in December, several soloists performed and the audience participated in the singing of several carols.

2ENABLE SOFTWARE PLATFORM

2Enable is a web based application developed by the CMDA to do three things:

1. Manage our Program 2. Deliver Learning Content 3. Raise Funds

The application went live late in April 2013 and is now fully functional. Although it took a couple of months to implement, we are pleased to be able to provide some interesting data.

Initially 2Enable was intended to deliver music content to our members in our Hubs. The initial focus was to develop Music Theory, Guitar and Recorder. This content was developed and most of it is linked to online courses on YouTube. The Music Theory course has been supplemented with content created by ourselves. The courses are broken into modules and each module includes an assessment. Assessments are questionnaires with multiple choice, true or false, free form and practical assessments. Most of the marking is automatic in that the application does the marking, but free form and practical assessments require a mentor to assess the answer or practical. The

Page 10 application allows users to mentor other users and as such provides a suite of tools for users who wish to use the platform to learn or for users who wish to mentor other users (such as teachers).

The platform has been successful and we are confident that rural users who have access to a computer can use the platform to teach themselves. Technology is not a barrier to the youth, however, we recognize that it is a barrier to many adults. Despite having installed computer networks and provided internet connectivity in two rural schools and one private enterprise space, the utilization of the application in these spaces has not been noticeable and it is our belief that students do not get access to these resources due to adult intervention in these spaces.

We are now busy with developing Mathematics, English First Additional Language and Physical Science content and assessments on the platform. Twelve teachers have been employed to aggregate and develop this content and this content should be completed by the 31st January. When the content is complete, there will be a significant marketing drive to get users registered on the platform and we hope to have at least 1000 users per grade or 12000 active users by the end of 2014. To facilitate the uptake of our platform, we are busy negotiating with the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation to install 2Enable in all of their libraries and with the Mpumalanga Department of Basic Education who will be partnering with us to moderate all content developed and to deploy the application in Mpumalanga schools. In the meantime, we are attempting to raise R7.5million to employ 24 teachers who will develop the content for ten high demand secondary school subjects and seven primary school subjects. Despite not having launched the academic content officially, some of our members have been accessing the content loaded on the platform and below is an indication of the results achieved by them.

We are confident of the following:

1. That 2Enable works effectively in rural spaces with poor (slow) internet connectivity 2. That the youth are not deterred by technology and easily grasp the technology used. 3. Being free for any user, that this application has the potential to become a major educational delivery platform in 2014 both in Mpumalanga and Nationally. 4. That the application has the potential to raise significant funding for the CMDA through sponsorship (marketing budgets) and social investment budgets from organisations who are keen to improve education standards in South Africa.

To further improve the platform, we are now busy with an Instant Messaging upgrade that will permit any user to seek online and real-time academic help from any other user on the platform (peer to cloud), from users in their learning circle and from mentors (teachers or afterschool programs).

In 2014, we will be developing a more formalised band development program and will be developing a ‘curriculum’ on the platform. This will allow CMDA bands in our band development program to select a module of songs to perform. Each module will include information about the song, songwriter and performer, will include lyrics, chords, and YouTube performances and will include a short assessment to assess the users’ knowledge of the content. This curriculum will only be available to registered CMDA members and not the public in general. We plan to have this curriculum in place by March 2014.

Interesting Facts: 1. The University of Michigan Dearborn intends developing content specifically for the 2Enable Platform using their students who are studying to become teachers. 2. We have had an enquiry from Peru to use the platform in an after- school academic support program.

Page 12

ROUTE 40 MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Route 40 Music Festival is a CMDA initiative to expose our members to well-known musicians; specifically to perform alongside them and to interact with them backstage and in workshops. The purpose of this is to inspire them in their efforts and to have them believe that they too can be stars.

The Route 40 Music Festival was also the culmination of a songwriting competition held in partnership with The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall and the Rock School Scholarship Fund both of the USA. The US competition was judged by acclaimed artist Dave Matthews, songwriter Holly Knight, Wayne Kramer (MC5), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles) and Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo). The South African competition was judged by Vusi Mahlasela, Craig Hinds (Watershed), Elvis Blue (Platinum selling South African singer/songwriter), Jason Hartman (Winner of Idols in South Africa), Kabelo Mabalane (TKZee), Kahn Morbee (The Parlotones), Ross Learmonth (Prime Circle) and (Freshly Ground).

The Festival took place in December from the 6th to the 8th. The youth bands and winners of the song writing competition came together on the 2nd December and for five days, five music coaches worked full time rehearsing and preparing the bands for the Festival. We were fortunate to have Carl Restivo assist us in this regard and his calm disposition and vast experience made the rehearsal period much easier for everyone concerned. The US songwriters were integrated into local bands and every band had to learn the song composed by their US counterpart.

Page 13

The line-up of the festival itself was something to behold, with The Parlotones and Prime Circle performing at the same event for the very first time. The Festival also had an international flavour with Stefano Giorgini from the USA and Gran’mah from Mozambique.

Our own Café Wha? surprised many of the professional bands with performances that rivalled the best. Vital Crew and Apple Finger both with US Song Writing Finalists excelled in their performances and these and other performances both surprised and impressed Jon Savage of Radio 5 (who was the MC on the main stage). “I never would have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes. The next generation of stars is undeniably being bred up in White River!”

Prime Circle – “On behalf of Prime Circle we were very honoured to be part of ROUTE40 and CMDA and we looking forward to future involvement. Prime Circle had a great time on stage and your students were very talented! Looking forward to 2014 event involvement with you.”

Woodstock Mafia – “What CMDA is doing should be happening in every corner of South Africa - kids need an outlet, they need guidance and support and what better than through music. When I turned 13 I asked my dad if he would buy me a bass guitar and I started a band with some kids down the road; a lot of kids go through that, and most keep at it for life, even if it’s just a Sunday garage band. CMDA elevates this to a totally different level. From a personal point of view, playing music with other people, crossing over genres, styles and skill level will not only improve your own ability and knowledge, but also teamwork and understanding of others. I think this is partly how we're able to tolerate each other now in many ways; we're all quite different individuals, yet as a band we somehow work together, allow for give and take. Often, structured curriculum based music classes are restrictive and stun passion, but free-flow jamming, learning to play with feeling, that can only really occur when you feed off the energy of those around you. Another point perhaps, and more so with the festival itself, is that these young guys have had an opportunity to mix and learn from some of the more seasoned guys on the local scene, something that we may take for granted but when you're in their shoes, it’s like seeing your heroes in the flesh; and they get to perform! It really is a fantastic initiative. “

CMDA WORKSHOPS

We continue to engage top South African musicians and bands and ask them to run workshops and to allow our bands to open for their shows. 2013 has been very successful in this regard and the Route 40 Music Festival added significant value to our program this year. During 2013, we were fortunate to have Kahn Morbee of The Parlotones, Wendy Oldfied, Shawn Philips and Vuyo Jack (Global Dignity) run workshops for our members.

The Route 40 Music Festival was developed to have our youth bands open for major bands and during the day, several bands and musicians ran workshops for our students and the public in general. We were privileged to have the following workshops:

1. Wendy Winks - Rock Scholarship Fund (USA). Wendy Winks is a producer, and the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit Rock School Scholarship Fund. From 2007 to 2010 she also ran the School of Rock Hollywood. She champions artists and projects that make a positive difference in the world. She holds an MBA from Notre Dame de Namur University. 2. Carl Restivo, an American born musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and sound engineer. His unique abilities as a lead singer and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards) have landed him spots on tour with , Tom Morello's Freedom Fighter Orchestra supporting The Nightwatchman, Perry Farrell's Satellite Party, and Street Sweeper Social Club. 3. Vusi Mahlasela. His music is generally described as "African folk" and he is often dubbed as "" of South Africa. His work was an inspiration to many in the anti-apartheid movement. His themes include the struggle for freedom, and forgiveness and reconciliation with enemies. Vusi has released seven studio albums on Sony in South Africa and was signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records in 2003.

4. Chris Amos and Yasmin De Soiza from The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall.

Other guests included:

1. Stefano Giorgini – US Songwriter and Performer 2. Craig Hinds – South African Songwriter and Performer (Watershed) 3. Shortstraw – South African Band 4. ISO – South African Band

Wendy Winks on the Route 40 Music Festival – “It was an extraordinary week. I knew it would be, but your kids and your community surpassed anything that I imagined. The kids were so bright, open, and welcoming, as was everyone that we worked with! I was especially moved by the workshop that Vusi Mahlasela gave, and by his performance later that evening. The emotion, the joy and uplifting feeling that he created with his words and music were remarkable. I was similarly blown away by the young South African bands who learned the US students music, and how enthusiastic they were, supportive, and kind. Music truly brought us all together in a way that nothing else could have.

I know that we were all forever changed for the better by the experience. Thank you for making it possible, and I would love to find a way to do it again!”

A hugely inspirational Vusi Mahlasela
