This was supported by other substantial grants, the largest of which came from The Dell Development Fund of 27 Computers and R500,000 to assist us with the development of our 2Enable platform. Again, we have been supported on an ongoing basis by Douglasdale Dairy and Seasons in Africa who have made monthly contributions; and the RMB Fund, The MacKenzie Foundation, HCI Foundation, Fintax and several private contributors who have made either once off or recurring donations. This year we had two flagship events; Ilizwi, a musical written and directed by Ingrid Wylde and our inaugural Route 40 Music Festival. Ilizwi, with a cast of over 40, most of whom were from our KaBokweni and Zwelisha hubs, was an exceptional production that ended up touring to Cape Town and performing at the Nedbank Arena World Economic Forum delegates. We are grateful to Vuyo Jack, HCI Foundation and a number of generous private individuals for funding this tour. At the Route 40 we had many well-known South African bands and artists perform alongside our youth bands as well as international guest musicians. We were fortunate to have had Carnegie Hall and The Rock Scholarship Fund in the USA run a song-writing competition across 300 rock schools in America. The top 6 finalists were flown out to participate alongside our youth bands at the Festival. Coca-Cola Fortune and SAB were the main sponsors of the event and many local organisations contributed accommodation, meals and transport. A significant donation in the form of rent relief by the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre and Louis van der Merwe in particular makes it possible for the program to operate from the current premises at the Performing Arts Centre. Page 3 In 2013, the CMDA continued to deliver its music program through its existing hub structures. 2Enable, the application we have developed to manage our program and deliver educational content to our users went live at the end of April. We are now able to better track the utilisation of our program and we have managed to deliver over 3000 assessments to users on the platform and have tracked over 2300 contact sessions with our members that include band development, coaching and attendance at our hubs. We continue to rely on a very small management team, our music coaches, hub managers and circuit coordinator, in addition to the many volunteers and community members who help us to function effectively. It is a program that has captured the hearts and minds of many people and again, we wish to thank everyone, especially corporate and private donors, for their ongoing support. Our contribution to the local community was recognised by the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism at their annual awards event where the CMDA was announced the recipient of the Kruger Lowveld Community Service Award for 2013. This report will detail the progress made in 2013 and our plans and requirements for 2014. Christopher Amos - We cannot thank you enough for being such a great collaborator on this project (Song writing Contest and Route 40 Music Festival). I think the results were even more powerful than we all had expected—for both the students and the staff involved—and it was incredibly exciting to see so many months of planning come to fruition in such a successful festival. I cannot praise the CMDA students enough for how open and welcoming they were to their American counterparts. It is a huge credit to their character and the values that you’ve instilled in all the students studying at CMDA that the musical collaborations were so successful and that all the students spent so much time getting to know one another and enjoying their time together. I know it was an unforgettable and life-changing experience for all the American students. Director, Education Media & Technology The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall Christine Belinda - Beautiful! As a parent of one of the American songwriters, I cannot even begin to put into words my appreciation to all parties involved, especially the host CMDA. The collaborations between the Carnegie Music Exchange students (The Weill Music Institute) and The Rock School Scholarship Foundation and CMDA has empowered many young musicians with knowledge, skill, friendship, and deep appreciation for one of the most joyous experiences of their lives. They were all transformed in ways that will continuously contribute to the arts and to the beauty of life. Even those of us who could not attend or travel to South Africa were given incredible gifts by all you amazing, amazing people! We continue to unravel all that Anna Pearl has experienced. We are forever grateful to all of you for taking such good care of her and offering such an incredible life changing experience. THANK YOU ALL!
